Agriculture Department en tomologists said Wednesday that recent tests in Florida and Cali fornia show that the pests now are "definitely resistant" to DDT, which once was deadly poisonous to them. May Build Immunity They said 'that while mos quitoes are not yet noticeably resistant to newer insecticides, they may also build up immuni ty to them if given time. The new poisons include lindane, chlordane and BHC. The experts pointed out that DDT has been used extensively in the two test areas since it was first available in 1945. The resistance build-up has been gradual but is speeded up when insecticides are used on mos quito larva that is, by spraying swamps and other breeding grounds. "When large-scale outdoor con trol campaings are directed against mosquitoes in the larva stage, most of the insecticide susceptible mosquitoes are killed ... this greatly increases the Meter Reader Guesses; Complaints Received Houston, Tex. U.R) The Houston Natural Gas Corp. was puzzled when it received a del uge of complaints from con sumers in suburban Jacinto City. Most complained their bills for the past month were far above their normal bills. A check showed that others, who hadn't complained, received bills much less than they were accustomed to getting. Red-faced company officials later explained the meter reader in Jacinto City had neglected to make his rounds and had just "guessed at" the readings. At first I wondered if thy were all charity cases but there was only one non-pay patient among them, and th doc tor seemed more indulgent to ward this one than he was to ward the others. Months later I talked with a few of the pa tients. They were all apparently cured, and they all expressed their faith in the skill of the doctor. There may be a moral here for some practitioners. Offhand I'd say this doctor, notwith standing his skill, was too reti cent. Yet it was obvious that his Years a so, when I believed and assured readers that radical operation was the only cure for hernia, I be came interest ed in what seemed to be a .new and prob ably dangerous method which, numerous cor respondents as sured me, gave a cure without hospitalization. Although I re garded the doctor they mention ed as an arrant quack, I repress ed my qualms and visited the doctor to observe his technique. I watched him treat eight or ten patients, each treatment requir ing only a few minutes, giving the patient little or no discom fort. I learned three things that day: (1) The ambulant (office, injec tion) treatment or hernia (rupture, breach) had merit (2) The doctor's skill was com parable with that of the finest surgeon (3) The method is applicable in some cases, not in all cases. On written request, accom panied with stamped, self-addressed envelope, I'll send the pamphlet on hernia. Please do not ask me how much this treat ment costs or whether it will cure your case. Both questions are for your own physician to answer. In general the ambulant treatment is not more expensive than operation and hospitaliza tion and it does not interrupt ordinary work or daily activity. I was impressed by the way the doctor handled his patients. His replies, if any, when they asked any questions were .Thort. I never found the way when I was an honest doctor.
