The "handy guy" who rode three Kentucky Derby winners and then switched to training horses when his riding days were over sat in a restaurant hard by Belmont Park and told of the hard luck that has pursued him In recent years. "I've had a few offers to train horses, but they haven't amount ed to much," Sande said as he altematingly sipped coffee and wrung those still-powerful Iook ing hands that had held the reins Champ's Manager Refused License New York (U.R) Pudgy Willie Ketchum. manager of Liehtweieht Champion Jimmy Carter, refused Tuesday to be the Leo Durocher of boxing. In a case which parallels the 1947 suspension -without -reason of "Leo the Lip," Ketchum has been denied a second's ljcense by the New York State Athletic commission. No reason was given other than that the move was in the "best interests of boxing." But rotund Willie, belying his timid aDDearance. demands a public hearing to make known the reasons for this move. "I'm not gonna be a Durocher,' he said. "I ain't done anything wrong and I haven't anything to fear. What I want to know is, why the witch hunt." Portland Beavers Sign Ex-Dodger Outfielder Riverside (U.R) Manager Clay Hopper of the Portland Beavers Tuesday announced signing of Jim Russell, former Brooklyn and Montreal outfield star. Russell played for Montreal last season and is in Brooklyn camp at present. He is 31, has a lifetime major- league batting average of .267 and had 428 runs-batted-in in 1,035 games. Russell started in organized ball in 1938, went to Pittsburgh in 1942, to Boston's Braves in 1947 and to the Dodger organization in 1949. NEW KEYSTONE COMBO Bradenton, Fla. (U.R) Al Schoendienst probably will team with manager Eddie Stanky as the St. Louis "Cardinals' key stone combination when they open the National league sea son. Rifle Club Slates Shoot Medford Rifle and Pistol club will hold an indoor smallbore sectional rifle tournament on March 29 and 30 at Merrick's range. There will be matches of 20 shots, each, prone, sitting, kneel ing and standing with another match to consist of the aggre gate of these scores. An inter national aggregate will be to talled from the sitting, kneeling and standing scores. A match for four man teams will also be held. Post entries will be accepted up to the limit of 96 total en tries. Firing on Saturday will be 6 to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Medford Rifle team No. 1 and Yreka, Calif., recently tied for second-in the California-Oregon Rife league with 10 wins and two losses. Klamath Falls was first with 11 wins and one loss. Medford team No. 2 ranked 10th in the 13-team field with four wins and eight losses. Sacramento Solons Buy Dillinger From Chisox Pasadena (U.R) Infielder Bob Dillinger, three-time base stealing champion of the Ameri can league, was sold Tuesday by the Chicago White Sox to the Sacramento Solons of the Pa cific Coast league. Purchase price was not dis closed, but was believed to be $10,000 plus a player for the Sox' Memphis farm club. CAMPANELLA HOT Miami (U.R) A few days ago the Dodgers were worried about catcher Roy Campanella, the National league's "most valu able player" of 1951, because he was too fat. Now the league pitchers are worried. In the last three days, Campy has blasted a homer and seven doubles and raised his spring batting average to .442. Boy Friend Admits ONE WAY TO TELL Jacksonville, Fla. (U.R) W. P. Weaver, head of the city park ing' meter department, has ihis own method of determining the extent of tourist trade. It is the number of pennies in five-cent parking meters. Weaver figures persons who put pennies in nickel meters are strangers to the city. Canadians, Detroit Favorites In Stanley Cup Hockey Playoff By United Press The Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens, who finish ed 1-2 in the regular National Hockey league season, were fa vored to win the opening games in the Stanley cup semi-final playoffs Tuesday night at their home arenas. Detroit, which won the NHL race by 22 points, entertains the third-place Toronto Maple Leafs, while the Canadiens play host to the fourth-place Boston Bruins. Sellout crowds are expected for each game. Murdering Girl in San Francisco Park San Francisco (U.R) Ramon Rodriguez, 18, said Tuesday that his 17-year-old girl friend fought "like a wildcat" trying to beat him off before he pummeled, strangled and stripped her in San Francisco's Mission park. " Bandages covered the livid fingernail scratches left on his ace by the young girl's desper ate attempts to resist him. Body Found ia Bushes - The alleged killer was charged with suspicion of murder late Monday night, some 15Vi hours after the body of "model stu dent" Hilda Rose Pagan was found in bushes of the park with in the shadow of the high school she attended. The girl, regarded as a steady, churchgoing young citizen by her family and teachers, had numerous dates with. Rodriguez before their fatal encounter, he told questioners. Rodriguez Monday afternoon reenacted the crime for police. Officers had to string rope bar ricades to keep hundreds of the girl's fellow students and curious onlookers away from the spot where the boy killed her as she resisted his advances. Rejected 'Proposition' Denying he raped the girl, Rodriguez said she rejected a "proposition," then: "I hit her and she began to fight back . . .-like a wildcat. I hit her several times; I don't know how many." Then, he continued, he went home and changed out of his blood-spotted clothes. IMS MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUHE HOT Japanese Vessels Trapped by Ice Floe Sendai, Japan (U.R) A giant ice floe trapped a large Jap anese fishing vessel and a res cue ship Tuesday off northern Hokkaido within sight of Russian-held Sakhalin island. Heavy snowstorms brought distress signals from at least 15 other vessels in the same general area. The Japanese coast guard im mediately reauested American aid for the ships, which were trapped in the straits of Soya Haikyo, the narrow neck of water separating U. S. forces sta tioned on Hokkaido from Soviet forces on Sakhalin. The U. S. Army said the res cue ship, a destroyer-escort type operated by the Japanese coast guard, was trapped while trying to free the 50-ton fishing vessel Tsuru-Maru and Its crew of 14. Olympia (U.R) An initiative to repeal the Sunday blue laws of 1909 has been filed by a Spokane committee describing itself as "an angry group of small business men." "The. committee for Repeal of Unpopular Legislation," headed by Thomas C. Kelley, submitted its initiative to Secretary of State Earl Coe who assigned it number 182. Amusement Banned The Sunday blue laws, or Sun day closing laws, ban the sale of food. uncooked meats and most other merchandise on Sun day. They also outlaw baseball games and other forms of amuse ment, such as theaters. However, except for prohibit ing the sale of liquor, the Sun day blue laws are seldom en forced to any degree. Kelly said repeal of the laws would permit "the sale of food, clothing, merchandise, personal services and personal- property at any and all times." However, if the blue laws were repealed it would be up to the State Liquor Control board to say whether or not liquor could be sold on Sunday. Joseph Lavin, assistant attorney general for the liquor control board, said the board now is pro hibited by the blue laws from authorizing Sunday sales, but if the blue laws were repealed then the board would have sole au thority to determine if liquor could be sold on the Sabbath. Before the initiative can get on the general election ballot this November, its sponsors must secure at least 50,000 valid sig natures of registered voters be fore midnight July 7.
