Population at the 'beginning of 1942: 17,000. Annual income: $27 million. Then came the big war and postwar boom in the West Palo Alto, with lots of open land around it, got even more than its share of this growth. Today it numbers more than 31,000 oepple. Its income has soared to more than $67 million. In these two figures lies the reason for :en years of amazing telephone growth: More people in town and more of those people wanting telephones. For wartime shortages had built a big list of people waiting for service. We had to catch up on those orders and build to meet the new orders that flooded in steadily. Just since 1945, for instance, we've put up hundreds of new poles in the Palo Alto exchange... we've added enough cable cir cuits, linking new telephones with the cen tral office, to circle the earth almost twice. Local and Mother Singars Maai Mother Singers of Washington school will meet Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the school gymnasium, it was announced today. Advanced Chester L. Conk lin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill DuCharme, route 3, box 383-D, Medford, was advanced in rate to a Navy construction man, ac cording to a release from the Navy station at Sangley Point, Cavite, P. I., where he is at tached to the construction bat talion detachment. He enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and took re cruit training at the San Diego, Calif., Navy training center. Museum Visitors A total, of 62,009 visitors had called at the Jacksonville Museum since its opening in August, 195C, at clos ing time Sunday evening, ac cording to Mrs. Myrtle P. Lee, curator. Monday visitors includ ed Mrs. George Carter of Med ford with her sister, Mrs. Fran ces Beeson Cole, San Francisco; Mrs. Minnie Culver, Phoenix, Ore., and Mrs. L. Pankey, Med ford, according to Mrs. Lee. Also calling there during the day were two visitors from Portland, T. A. Crump and J. M. Helfrich. Hospital Nolai Debra Lee Oakes, 14-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Oakes, route 1, box 257, was treated and released yesterday at Sacred Heart hospital for finger injuries received in an accident at her home, according to hospital at tendants. Stephen Boggs, 6, re ceived several stitches to both lips because of injuries suffered while playing Sunday at his home at route 2, box 275-T, ac cording to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Boggs. He was re leased from Sacred Heart hos pital after receiving treatment there. Medical patients at the hospital include Mrs. Marie Clark, 433 Berrydale avenue, and Mrs. Arthur Dorson, Prospect. Personal Emergency Sorgary Linda Stickney, 8, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Stickney, 530 Benson street, is recovering at Sacred Heart hospital from emergency appendectomy there Sunday. Foot Surgery Miss Donna Lee McCuen, 16, of 2583 Howard avenue, underwent minor foot surgery today at Sacred Heart hospital. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. -A. McCuen of the same address. Mrs. McCuen is convalescing at the same hos pital from surgery and is now able to have visitors, according to a report from the hospital. Daughter Born A daughter was born March 16 to Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Dean Whaley, Long Beach, Calif., it was re ported here today. It weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and has been named Lonna Sue. Mr. and Mrs. Whaley are both former Medford residents. She is the former Clara Hackett, daughter of Mrs. John E. Hackett, 624 Chestnut street. To Annapolis John DeZell, a Naval academy midshipman, left by plane last night for Annapo lis, Md., after being here to at tend Saturday the funeral serv ices for his mother, Mrs. Berna dine DeZell, friends said today. His sister, Joan DeZell, a stu dent at George Fox college, New burg, Ore., and their father. Jack DeZell, San Francisco, also here for the funeral, have remained in Medford this week, they added. New Employees United States National bank's new em ployees include 'Mrs. Jeannette Dumas, who is replacing Mrs. June Barlow in the statement department; Mrs. Juanita Guile, replacing Mrs. Lorraine Petty, in the stenographic department; Miss Thelma Brock, a savings teller; and Miss Allison Camp bell, Medford senior high school student now working afternoons at the bank in the clerical de partment. Mrs. Bonnie Young, a former employee at the bank, has returned as a commercial tel ler. Mrs. Guile has been em ployed in the teller department until her transfer to the steno graphic department. Today, after putting more than $4 million into Palo Alto's telephone system since 1942, we have almost two and a half times as many tele phones at work. And with all this, we're still not able to fill all orders as rapidly as they come in. But, in the face of increasingly severe shortage of materials, well keep do ing all we can to take care of present orders and to meet the demands for service which we know still lie ahead. Gard ner, Navy sonarman who has been here on a 30-day leave, will leave tomorrow accompanied by Mrs. Gardner and son, Michael, for Long Beach, Calif., where Gardner will be stationed with the Navy and the family will live. Eaton, 64, died last night at a local hospital. Funeral arrangemetns are in care of Conger-Morris funeral home. Collision Cars driven by Del la May Cormie, Central Point and Lorenzo Dow Inskeep, 2401 Hillcrest drive, were involved about 8 p.m. Monday evening in a collision at Main street and Riverside avenue, according to the city police. Both cars were damaged and taken to garages, police said. No one was reported to have been injured, police said, but the Holbrook car turned over. Officers reported that both cars were going south, and that Lenox started to pass the other vehicle, when it started to make a left turn, striking the first car.
