(International) Moon Questions Answered - By J. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer. Extension Division Oregon Higher Education System . We answer here a few ques tions which often are received. 1. "What was the matter with the new moon last evening? It looked like a complete round moon with nearly all of it in eclipse. I never saw anything like that before." This is a phenomenon which may be observed any month when the "thin slip of the new moon" is in a very clear west ern sky which is growing dark. It is called "the old moon in the new moon's arms." The moon is a globe of about one-fourth the diameter of the earth. It is all "out there" even though some times we seem to see only a thin crescent. But when sky condi tions are good and the moon is still young, we see . the entire disk of the moon that is turned our way. ' The dim part of the moon is the night side; the brilliant cres cent, the day part. Most of the lighted half is then turned away from us. We see the night side due to earthshine on it. When the moon is new to us, the earth is full to it, and gives it about 50 times as much earth light as we get from a full moon. It is so strong that we can see the night moonscape dimly lighted by it. In the writer's youth when go ing home from a wedding one winter night we saw near the eastern horizon a phenomenon which might put the question above in reverse. Someone re marked that it was very unusual to see a new moon in the east during the evening. No adult in the group seemed to realize that a real lunar eclipse was in pro-j gress. ' A" I 0 "Is there any justification for the ideas of some that the weather for the coming month can be predicted by the tilt of the new moon?" None at all excepting that we can expect the general weather to be somewhat the same for a certain month year after year. We are sometimes told that a crescent moon that is so tipped that it would spill water if it were a dish, is a wet moon, and that one which is lying pretty well on its back so as to hold water is a dry moon. Some evi dently believe that there ' are years, when the new moon of March will be "dry", and other years "wet." Tip Always Same The tip of the new moon for any certain month is always the same year after year. In March it is always "dry"; in September, always "wet", with varying stages between for other months. Look for the new moon in the western twilight around the middle of this coming week and behold a crescent lying almost with its points up. But instead of holding water in its arms, it will be holding the "old moon" faintly illuminted by earthshine. LONG TENURE ENDED Theresa, N. Y. (U.R) Residents of this famed Kennecott Copper Company mining town worked against time Saturday sandbag ging the community s main street into a makeshift canal to handle a feared flood from spring runoffs of a record snow pack on surrounding mountains. The town of 9,000 persons, site of one of Kennecott's biggest operations at the Ruth Copper nit. lies at the mouth of two huge canyons through which tons of water would cascade should a quick thaw hit the area. Nevada's worst winter in 60 years has left almost six times the normal water 'content im prisoned in snow drifts around the town. Warm Spell Forecast A period of cool weather with no rain might alleviate a flood threat and produce a slow runoff. Neither East nor West have made the slightest attempt to understand each other, however, he added. Moe warned that the world situation remains tense and that the "violent language" used in the past months has increased fear and anxiety. The middle-aged, good-humored Norwegian, who led his com mittee through stormy weather, said the East and West did not agree to establish a disarmament commission. They- remained "miles apart" on the basic ques tions of arms reduction and atomic control, he thought "There is no outstanding achievement in this session," he said, "that will mark the place of this assembly in the history of the United Nations." Scents Danger Moe pointed to the surprising ly large support which Russia mustered in favor of the mass admission of new members to the organization. He cautioned that despite strong support for the western-sponsored principle of collective action against ag gression, discussions revealed a "certain reluctance against too automatic a procedure in this matter. He listed the existence of states which purposely follow a neutral policy and pointed to the increasing influence of the Arab and Latin-American blocs. "Many delegates feel," Moe said, "that the atmosphere has been somewhat better than in previous sessions, and almost everybody considers the danger system can handle only 150 feet of runoff at" a time. Mayor M. E. Broadbent said the only place the water could be channeled without ruining the town is right down the main street. So the sandbagging opera tion began. "This has been the first unani mous decision for a long time in the United Nations. If all differ ences could be discussed in the same quiet way, we should have taken the frst important step on the road towards the relief of tension in the world. "Nevertheless, I think it cor rect to say that even if the ten sion between East and West has not been eased, this session has not shown any increase in the tension. "It is Interesting to note that the strong will to peace in all countries, especially in those which do not belong directly to one or the other camp, expressed itself forcefully in several votes at this session."
