TEM MEDFORD (OHEGOX) MAIL TWBUHE State Finance Crackdown on Salem (UJ3 State Finance Director Harry Dorm an has ttarted a crackdown on publica tions issued by state depart ments to the size, to the con tents and to the grade of paper. Dorman said too many of the publications by various state de partments were being printed on expensive bond paper and : carrying material he does not believe is to the interest of the general public. Governor Agrees To this. Gov. Douglas Mckay agreed. He said he would stand back of his finance director. He said he thought several publica tions either could be eliminated entirely or at least reduced in size and in the grade of paper used, t The governor observed: "Pub lications designed to give the people information do not have to be printed on the most ex pensive bond paper on the mar ket." - , Forestry Department Dorman said he already has directed the State Department of . Forestry to reduce the size of its monthly publication and plans a conference with State Agriculture department officials about the size, contents and quality of its publication. The March issue of the "Agriculture Swarms of Grosbeaks Sojourning in Valley Thousands of western evening grosbeaks, little yellow, black and white birds, have descended on the Rogue valley in their an nal trek to Canada from Cali fornia. The Jackson county agent's office reports many quer ies as to what the birds are, where they came from and why they are staying so long. The ' office reports that the birds travel through the valley annually, eating primarily tree seeds from maples and other species. Problems Subject of Course To Be Held Here "Alcohol in Human Affairs," a college level course offering three term hours of graduate or undergraduate credit, will be of fered here for 11 session start ing Wednesday, March 26, ac cording to the city schools of fice. Class hours will be from 7 to 9:45 p. m. in Room 23 of Med ford senior high school. The course will be instructed by W. K. Ferrier of the general exten sion division of the state system of higher education. An $18 fee will be charged for the course. For Social Workers According to the extension di vision, the purpose of the course is . to aquaint teachers, social workers counselors, school ad ministrators and qualified lay men with the latest scientific in formation related to problems of beverage alcohol. Lecture and discussion topics will include the effects of alco hol on the human body and psy chological and sociological prob lems involved in the use of al cohol. Also scheduled to start next week is a class in audio-visual aids in education, to be instruct ed by Lawrence Butler of South ern Oregon college. The first of 11 class sessions will be held from 7 to 9:45 p. m. Tuesday, March 25, in Room 23 of Med ford senior high school. The class fee is $18. Convicted Draft-Dodger Practices for New Job ' Hollywood (U.R) Convicted draft-dodger Dick Contino began accordion practice sessions Sat urday for his new job, a two weeks stint at Mocambo begin ning next Tuesday. Club Bocc Charlie Morrison refused to disclose the former butcher boy's salary, but the United Press learned it was "considerably lower" than the $2500-4000 range the entertainer previously received. , Contino said he took the job because "my family needs mon- ey, and I want to help." He will do two shows nightly for two weeks if his draft board doesn't call him first. IS52 Camp Established In Arctic Ocean Hear North Pole Anchorage, Alaska (U.F9 A civilian scientist and two U. S. Air Force officers were camped Saturday on a floating ice island 60 miles from the North Pole following the first successful aircraft landing on the huge Arc tic ocean ice mass. , Maj. Gen. William D. Old, commanding general of the Alaskan Air Command, acted as co-pilot of the jato and ski-wheel equipped C-47 cargo plane that landed on the ice island after an 18-hour flight from a secret Greenland air base. Semi-Permanent Station The general said the Air Force hopes to make a "semi-permanent" weather station on the island. Plans call for supplying the camp by air and increasing the present crew to about 10 pr 12 scientists and communica tions experts, he said. . ' Old denied that any inter-service rivalry prompted the Air Force landing on the ice island at this time. v Members of the Navy's "Operation Ski Jump n" at Point Barrow plan to make a landing on one of the islands before April 15. ' . "We made our plans last fall, and just carried them out," the general said. The Air Force an nounced plans earlier last year to make a landing on the island last summer, but poor weather conditions forestalled the attempt. Valley Lumbermen Will Attend Meeting Two Rogue valley lumbermen, directors of the West Coast Lumbermen's association, will take part in the 41st annual stockholder's meeting of the lumber association in Portland next week, it was announced Saturday. They are B. L. Nutting, mana ger of the Medford corporation, Medford, and Richard- Reynen, of the Fir Milling and Planing company, Ashland. Hillman Leuddemann, presi dent, said the stockholders will work to solve problems of vital importance to this region. Ap proximately 250 lumbermen, in cluding the 31-man board of di rectors, are expected to attend the meeting, to be m the Mult nomah hotel March 27. Topics to be considered In clude mortgage money and cred its for home building, freight car supply, extent of national lum ber promotion by West coast mills for 1952, problems of gov ernment affecting the lumber industry, and a review of co operative dealer-aid programs. Police Continuing Parking Law Drive The city police department Saturday issued another warning concerning its campaign' for prompt payment of fines for auto parking violations. Recently the department re ported that warrants would be issued when parking tickets were not paid within 24 hours. If warrants are necessary, a war rant serving charge of $5 is being added to the fines. In one case Saturday, in which a warrant was issued because of three unpaid parking tickets, the fine totaled $8. Puget Sound Workers Get Wage Increases Washington (U.R) Sen. Warren G. Magnuson, (D.-Wash.) has announced that a wage in crease for unclassified or "blue collar" employees in the Puget Sound area will affect 15,000 persons. President To Run Cleveland (U.R) Lyle G. Wilson, political analyst and chief of the United Press Wash ington bureau, said Friday night that President Truman will be a candidate to succeed himself and that he will be renominated. "I believe Mr. Truman will run," Wilson said, "because none of the alternatives add up to anything about which he could be really enthusiastic." Wilson stated his beliefs on the forthcoming political conven tions at a public forum spon sored by the Cleveland Press. He discounted the idea that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's nomination might cause the President to step aside in the belief Mr. Truman's foreign policy would be in friendly hands if the general were elect ed. Wilson pointed out that "General Ike is also on record against a great deal of Mr. Tru man's foreign policy." The action was taken at a meeting of the sanitary authority in Portland. The corporation is operating a temporary treatment plant to dispose of waste at the housing development but the authority charges that the system is not adequate to maintain sanitary conditions. A battle to determ ine control of the corporation is now pending before the Oregon Supreme Court. It prevents t.ie authority from addressing the order directly to the officers. The corporation was repre sented at the meeting by Port land Attorney William E. Mur ray. Cornutt was selected from a group of World War II. veterans to buy the farm by the North western Railway company which previously owned the property. There are no improvements on the 181 acre tract of land, but sometime during the year it will be under irrigation, they said. The couple plans to leave here in July and will live at Moses Lake until they have made im provements to the property. Cor nutt is a native of Central Point and since returning from service nas aone part time farming and worked at the Medford corpora tion. Mrs. Cornutt has been, working at Hubbard Brothers in the housewares department.
