Three-Day Retriever Trial Starts at Hoover Lakes Rogue Valley Retriever club's first points field trial got unaer wn thic morninc at Hoover lakes eight xmile northeast of Medford. A qualifying take was to follow for retriev ers which have never won first, second, third or fourth in an open all-age event or have not won first in a qualifying stake. Katnrdav activity is to start at 7 a.m. and the open all-age stake is scheduled. Kentucky Opens Title Defense Raleigh, N. C (U.R) Classy Kentucky opens the defense of its NCAA basketball title Friday night a heavy favorite over Penn State in a first-round tourna ment game, while another game matches St. John's against South ern Conference champion North Carolina State. Kentucky has won the NCAA crown three of the last four years and, with a season record of 28-2 and rated the No. 1 team in the nation by the United Press board of coaches, is picked to sweep through to the title again. Iron Dukes Rated Third in Tourney Chicago (U.R) Dudley Moore's Duouesne Dukes were no better than the third choice Friday to win the Chicago Sta dium's NCAA regional basket ball tourney, and their coach ranked them only as darkhorses despite the best won and lost mark in the auartet of entries. Duquesne, which won 22 of 25 games this year, including iu games in a row, was a six point favorite over Princeton in the first game -of Friday night's double-header. For the second game Illinois Big Ten champion, gave a five point choice over Dayton, run nerun for the National Invita tional title and beaten in the finals of the tourney last Satur day. Brooklyn Dodgers Tell of Plans Miami (U.R) The Brooklyn Dodgers had two nine-inning pitchers Friday, plus a basket ball of plans which included making all-star first-baseman Gil Hodges their second-string catcher and acquiring Ewell Blackwell in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds. The route-going pitchers were 22-game winner Preacher Roe and one-game winner Chris Van Cuyk. Roe went the distance for the Dodger "B" team which lost to Mobile, 4-2, at Vero Beach, Fla., Thursday while Van Cuyk hurled for the "A" squad which beat the Cincinnati Reds, 4-0, at Tampa. Ashland Mentor Asks Transfer Ashland Charlie Jandreau, head football coach this year at Ashland high school, has asked the school board to transfer him from his post. Jandreau said that he may ac cept an offer to teach in the junior high next year and that he is also considering a Portland offer. He previously had coached in the junior high here. - . A Pacific In ternational Trapshooting asso ciation registered shoot is sched uled at the grounds. Practice traps open at 8:30 a.m. and regular shooting will commence at 10 a.m. The 10 a.m. event will be the 16-yard rivalry of 100 targets. Howard Hobson Advocates Wider Free Throw Lane Portland (U.R) Yale bas ketball coach Howard Hobson said Friday he will advocate boosting the width of the free throw lane to 12 feet when hoop officials meet in Seattle next Wednesday and Thursday. The former University of Ore gon coach said the 12-foot lane would be the answer to crit ics who charge that present day -basketball is dominated by sky-scraping players. Two Free Throws He also said he would recom mend to the basketball coaches' conference that two free throws be awarded on all defensive fouls, without the opposition waiving the second shot. Hob son, . who is . chairman of the U. S. Olympic games basketball committee, said the rule would make fouling unprofitable. He has taken the post of skip per of the Thompsonville, Ga., in the - Georgia-Florida State league. The club is part of the New York Yankee chain. Lucchesi worked out this spring with the San Francisco Seals. Medford of the now in operative Far West circuit had a working agreement with the Seals last season and througn them with the Yanks. Hoppe, Bozeman Tied in Cue Tiff San Francisco (U.R) Willie Hoppe, of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Jay Bozeman, Vallejo, Calif., were tied Friday for the top spot in the world's three cushion bil liard championship tournament. Each had a record of six wins and two losses as the tourney entered its final stages. Hoppe moved into the tie after defeating Art Rubin, Brooklyn 50-4, in a tough 53-inning match Thursday night.
