Around Hollywood Hollywood U.PJ Movie stars, fans, bleachers and search lights will take their places lor tne academy awards Thurs day night but more than half of the nomi nees' won't be there. Like last year, Holly wood's 22nd annual back patting festival Alia Mosby will be another "case of the absentee movie stars." Only nine of the 20 movie queens and profiles nominated for filmland's highest honors will show up at the Pantages theater on glittery Hollywood Boulevard. The other 11 are scattered half way around the world. ' Three of the four winners of the acting Oscars are likely not to be in the audience to weep their acceptance speeches. Not one nominee for the best sup porting actress award is in town. Joan Blondell, Thelma Ritter, Kim Hunter, Lee Grant and Mil dred Dunnock all are in New York. Others in New York Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, hot favorites to win for their roles in "A Street Car Named Desire," are in New York, too. Last year only eight nomi nees stuck around Hollywood. Of this year's star nominees, only Arthur Kennedy, Humphrey Bogart, Jane Wyman, Eleanor Parker and Shelley Winters will give the fans in the 550-seat bleachers outside the Pantages a treat. Nominee Katherin Hep burn is in London to appear in a play. Fredric March and Mont gomery Clift are in New York. Supporting actor nominees Leo Genn, Karl Maiden, Gig Young and K e v e n McCarthy will drive up in limousines for the event. The fifth nominee Peter Ustinov, is in London. Big-Wigs Shell Out But other stars, big-wigs, and a few fans shelled out S6 to $12 for the 2812 seats in the theater. The Academy of Motion Pic ture Arts and Sciences, an hon orary group, will hand out 29 Oscars, plus trophies ' for any special awards. The 112 nomi nees were picked by the 11,739 members of the movie industry. Only the 1700 academy mem bers voted on the final winners. Miss Leigh is a past winner for "Gone With The Wind." If March's name is announced when the envelopes containing the winners names are opened on the stage, he'll be the only star to boast three Oscars. He collected awards for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "The Best Years of Our Lives. Will Be Broadcast The presentation ceremonies will be broadcast over the Amer ican Broadcasting Company ra dio network at 9 p. m. PST. Since many movie studios won't let their stars appear on TV, the event will not be tele vised. Heavy Run of Smell Reported in Cowlitz Kelso, Wash. (U.R) The heaviest smelt run on the CoW' litz river in four years produced an additional 60,000 pounds Wed' nesday, but other Columbia riv er tributaries reported no trace of the silvery fish. Commercial dipnetters here re ported the price remained at $7 net a 50-pound box set by the Smelt Fishermen's Co-operative at Clatskanie, Ore. The Co-op erative gave up fishing Tuesday after a season's catch of 17,000 boxes. Few amateurs were taking smelt in the Cowlitz because the fish were running deep. brings you WkT. OFF. T. Frost, Oregon snow survey leader. Facts "collected through federal-state cooperative snow sur veys and irrigation water fore casts will be discussed. Nine regional groups will meet, be ginning with the north central Oregon committee at Hood Riv er, March 29. Other committees and their scheduled meetine daces and dates are: central Oregon at Red mond, March 31; John Day-Harney basin at Burns, April . 1; Umatilla-Walla Walla at Pendle ton, April 2; northeastern Ore gon at Enterprise, April 3; southeastern Oregon at Ontario, April ' 4: south central Orpcnn at Lakeview, April 5; southern uregon at Grants Pass, April 27; and Columbia basin at Port land, April 11. The state wide preliminary water supply outlook for Oregon is "good" to "excellent", Frost announced. Above normal snow cover is present in the moun tains and March 1 records have been broken on 52 of 93 snow courses measured, he said.
