March 20. 19S2 In And Around Gold Hill Gold Hill Gold Hill school will be closed all this week for its annual spring vacation, ac cording to announcement by Robert Sage, principal. Classes will resume on regular schedule Monday morning March 24. Mr. Sage reports that the influenza epidemic has liit the Gold Hill school this past week. Monday there were 50 pupils absent, al most one-fourth of the total en rollment. By Thursday, the num ber of absentees had dropped to 30. . A school assembly was held Friday afternoon, from 2:30 to 3:30, With a program of musical selections by the school band and the school chorus, under direction of Charles Cook, music instructor. A number of parents attended. The annual dinner for mem bers and families will be held by the Past Noble Grands Club of Amethyst Rebekah Lodge, Friday, March 21, at 6:30 p. m. at Odd Fellows lodge hall. The dinner had originally been scheduled for March 28, but the date was advanced one week 'to avoid conflict with the Metho dist Evangelistic Mission meet ings to be held here next week. Mrs. George Dorman and Mrs. Earl Moore are in charge of deco rations for the dinner. April meeting of Past Noble Grands club is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, at 2 p. m., at the home of Mrs. Earl Moore. The date of April 25, given in the Mail Tribune recently, was not correct. Members of the Friendly Cir cle will meet Friday noon at the home of Mrs. Paul Holder ness, corner of Fifth avenue and Seventh street. A pot-luck lunch eon will be followed by a social afternoon. Next session of the community square-dancing class will be held Saturday, March 22, at 8 p. m., at Odd Fellows lodge hall. All interested in learning to square dance are invited. There is no admission charge or instruction fee. Women attending are asked to bring sandwiches or cake for refreshments. The program meeting of Gold Hill Business and Professional Women's Club will be held Tues day, March 25, at 8 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Daniel Stewart, 619 Fifth avenue. The subject will be "Public Affairs," with a guest speaker from another club invited. The meeting of the League of Oregon Cities, held Wednesday night in Medford, was attended by Mayor O. W. Newland of Gold Hill, councilmen Fred Les ter and Milton Steinmetz, and lows lodge was not as well-attended as usual because of so much illness in the community. Members of the dance committee were Fred Lester, Arnold Gos nell and Errol Miller. The Re bekah refreshment committee in cluded Mrs. Norman Gail, chair man; Mrs. George Dorman and Mrs. Earl Moore. Mr. and Mrs. James S. Jones of Coos Bay, returned home Thursday after spending a week here visiting Mrs. Jones' son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Neece, on the Old Stage road. The Jones' were en route home after having spent the winter in Albuquerque, N. M. They reported fair weather and sunny skies upon leaving New Mexico, and during most of their long drive to Oregon. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas North, owners of Rockabye Rogue Motel on North 99 Highway, was brought home from a Medford hospital Wednesday, after having been hospitalized several days for medical treatment. A series of Methodist Evan gelistic meetings will be held every night next week at the Gold Hill Community Methodist church, starting Sunday, March 23. The Rev. H. A. Dierdorf, pastor of the church, will be as sisted by the Rev. L. J. Ruff of Hillsboro. The meeting Sunday night will be preceded by a pot luck dinner held in the basement dining room of the church. The public is invited. The monthly meeting of offi cers and teachers of the Sunday school of the Community Metho dist church was held March 11 at the home of Mrs. Carl Mays. The session was conducted by Wendell Aplin, Sunday school superintendent. Plans were dis cussed for an Easter program to be presented by the Sunday school, with members of all the classes taking part. Present at the meeting were the Rev. and Mrs. H. A. Dierdorf, and Mes- dames Roy Eskew, Melvin Bur nett, Perry Wait, George Turner and Ferd Jones; and E. S. Baker and Herman Leutke. Fire chief Melford Hood and three members of the Gold Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Stanley Foley, Robert Balch and Clyde Kell, attended a meeting of the Medford Fire Department Wednesday night, to watch the fire drills and to observe use and operation of fire fighting equipment. The Gold Hill depart ment expects delivery on its new 500 gallon pumper truck about June 1, and the members are holding regular drills and train ing sessions so as to be ready Spreckles' 4th Male Wins Divorce Suit Los Angeles (U.R) John Dolph Spreckels HI, one-time sugar heir who lost his fortune and now works as a hotel night clerk, was divorced by his fourth wife, Margaret, who charged extreme cruelty. Superior Judge Louis H. Burke awarded her an inter locutory decree Tuesday. She testified Spreckels once forced her from their home while she was clad in her nightie. Mrs. Spreckels, 24, waived alimony, but was granted her re quest for $100-a-month support for her 14-month old son, John Dolph Spreckles IV. city superintendent Turner. Mr. and Mrs. Don Schmidt, owners of the Coronado Motel on North 99 Highway, and their three children returned home last Monday after spending sev eral days in Portland. They also visited Mrs. Schmidt's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Portner, at White Salmon, Wash. Walter McLean, who had been in the hospital at Camp White for some time because of illness, was enough improved to be able to come home last Tuesday. Mrs. McLean, who has also been ill, is now much better. Mrs. Vaughn Quakenbush, owner of the Dardanelle Dinner House on the Old Stage road, is now home from a Medford hospital, after a severe attack of influenza. Her sister, Mrs. Alva Walker, has been helping to op erate the restaurant during Mrs. Quakenbush's illness. Arthur Langlie told the chamber of commerce here. Langlie said the decrease was a result of a reduction from 193,000 to 123,000 in the num ber of persons on welfare rolls. DOES SOMETHING BIG Lincoln, Neb. (U.R) An 18- year-old Lincoln youth was par oled for one year to a proba tion officer on charges that he set off two dynamite blasts in public parks. The youth told authorities he had seen the movie "When Worlds Collapse" and said it made him feel he should "do something." Medford Sailor Back From Eastern Duty Darrell S. James, a first class commissaryman in the U. S. Navy, is aboard the LST USS 772, which recently returned to San Diego after spending 10 months in Japanese and Korean waters, according to a Navy news release. James is the husband of Mrs. Hazel I. James, 555 Keeneway drive, Medford. During its far eastern tour of duty, the ship participated in training operations, salvage work, and as an aircraft carrier for helicopters, the Navy release said. It also was assigned to move prisoners of war from Pu san to Koje Do, and acted as the flagship of Flotilla 1. Fisherman Arrested In Seattle Robbery Seattle U.R) Richard E.
