Penney, leit above, founder in 1902 of the nationwide chain of retail stores which bear his name, was presented with a silver plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the firm at a recent company convention in San Francisco. Presenting the plaque to Penney is G. E. Mack, executive vice-president and treasurer, and H. H. Schwamb, vice president in charge of personnel, looks on. Ray Baker, manager of the Medford Penney store, attended the San Francisco meeting. SOC Registration For Spring Term ill Begin Monday Ashland Registration for spring quarter at Southern Ore gon cpllege will begin Monday, according to Mabel W. Winston, registrar. The term will continue through June 6, although seniors will graduate June 1. Mrs. Winston said enrollment is expected to remain close to the winter quarter total of 612 students which was a 5 per cent increase over fall term figures. Students are currently enjoying a spring recess between terms and classes will be reconvened Tuesday. Registration will con tinue through Monday, April 7. Eight evening classes are scheduled in spring term, Mrs. Winston reported. Valley resi dents are encouraged to enroll in the courses, either for college credit or for the enjoyment of the work. Night classes will include con temporary novel, basic ceramics, photography for beginners and vocal lessons in voice on Mon day; voice and diction on Tues day: contemporary problems and social dance Wednesday; and folk dance on Thursday. Com plete details may be obtained from the registrar's office. Review of winter term regis tration revealed that 191 stu dents listed Ashland as their home and 105 were from Med ford. The Jackson county total was 347 students. Fifty-six stu dents were from Josephine coun ty, 46 from Klamath county, 44 from Douglas and 28 from Coos. Police Court Collects $1,600 in February The Medford city police court, conducted by Judge Warren Lesseg, levied $1,600 in fines during February, according to a report for the month issued by City Superintendent Robert Duff. In addition, parking meter fines amounted to $779.30 during the month, the report states. The largest number of cases brought before the court was 41 involving violation of basic rule, for which $360 in fines was lev ied. The highest total fines, amounting to $400, were levied for nine reckless driving cases. Other cases included 33 illegal parking, $137.50 in fines; 25 drunk, $120 in fines; 35 failure to stop at stop street or red light, $155 in fines; . 16 expired vehicle license, $80 in fines; 17 no operator s license, $80; 3 disorderly conduct, $20 in fines; 1 driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor, $100; 1 car rying concealed weapon, $100; 7 failure to yield right of way, $35. A total of 192 cases were handled by the court during the month. Rooseveff Declines California Primary Los Angeles (U.R) James Roosevelt, son of the late Presi dent, said Wednesday that "un der no circumstances" will he permit his name to be entered in the California primary by dele gates formerly pledged to Presi dent Truman. Mr. Truman with drew his name from the primary Tuesday. Pilot Makes Perfect Landing in Street Spokane (U.B Pilot J. Hank Durham could boast of making a perfect landing on a city street Wednesday after bis plane was forced down by a driving bliz zard. The . daring maneuver here Tuesday resulted in no injuries or property damage. Durham told police be was blinded by the sudden storm be fore he could reach his destina tion at Calkins field. Durham, who was alone, set the small Taylorcraft down in an area studded by utility poles, trees, and homes. Logging Men To Argue Two Major Questions Spokane (U.R) Arguments on two issues affecting the log ging industry will be presented at the three-day intennountain logging conference beginning here Monday. The questions are "is the lum bering industry contributing more than its fair share toward the development of the national forests by sustained production of timber?" and "are highway use restrictions justified?" About 1,000 highway officials, regional foresters and logging representatives from Washing ton, Montana, Oregon, and Idaho have indicated they will take part in the discussions.
