MEDFOSDktTRIBUNB ID National AAU Chief Confident Gehrmann Will Be Reinstated New York (U.R) The secre tary of the National AAU ex pressed confidence Tuesday that Don Gehrmann will have his sus pension lifted in time to com pete in this Saturday's Olympic sports carnival at Madison Square Garden. Gehrmann, America's ace miler, was suspended by the Northeastern Ohio AAU for dropping out of a Knights of Co lumbus track meet in Cleveland last Friday because, he said, bis wife was ill. Secretary Dan Ferris said, however, that Gehrmann can be quickly re-instated by sending Ohio officials a doctor's certifi cate testifying to the illness of his wife. In Milwaukee, Wis., Gehr- Washington Champs Lose at National Meet Denver (U.R) Buchan's Bakers were out of the running for championship honors Tues day after bowing to Allen Brad ley's of Milwaukee, 83-57, in the opening round of the national AAU basketball tournament here. AAU Hoopsters Slate Second Round Pairings Denver (U.R) Second-round pairings in the week-long Na tional AAU basketball tourna ment were being completed here Tuesday with a 16-hour slate of 10 games on tap. However, - very few of the games promised to be much mote than breathers for teams from the National Industrial Basket ball league and several strong independent quints. Ton clashes on Tuesday's card includes the defending cham pion Stewart Chevrolet squad of San Francisco against the New Mexico Sellers, and the Cater pillar Diesels of Peoria against the San Diego Marines. The Chevrolets and Caterpil lars are the top-seeded quints in the upper bracket, and one of Ihe two is expected to reach Saturday s finals. Shoot Here On Sunday Medford Gun club will hold a PITA registered trapshoot on Sunday, March 23, at their grounds near the Crater Lake highway Four Corners. It will be a 250-target event, 100 at 16 yards, 100 handicap and 25-pair of doubles. There may be extra activity if time permits. The club has reported plans for two other shoots, the south ern PITA zome shoot on April 18, 19 and 20 and the Mail Trib une shoot on May 17 and 18. Braves, Indians Top Warm up Play New York-OJ.R) The Cleve land Indians and Boston Braves topped the Grapefruit league standings Tuesday but the St. Louis Browns shared the spot light. The Indians had won four of five games, the best showing in the American league, while the Browns had a 6-3 mark for the best in the National. The most surprising record, however, belonged to the Browns. Under new manager Rogers Hornsby, the Browns have won five of their seven ex hibition games. Williams Seeks Fight Before Meeting Cartel Baltimore (U.R) Ike Wil liams, a knockout winner in his first bout in seven months, said Tuesday he wants one more fight before trying to regain his lightweight championship from Jimmy Carter. Williams knocked out Johnny Cunningham in the fifth round of their scheduled 10-round bout in Baltimore Coliseum Monday night. He is scheduled to meet undefeated lightweight Chuck Davey in Chicago next week. Clearwater, Fla. The bout was given "condi tional" approval after the Illin ois Athletic Commission exam ined charges that Eddie Coco, convicted of a second degree murder charge in Florida, was in the Graziano -contingent. Graziano said he released Coco last January because Coco "got in a lot of trouble and was hurting me very much." The commission said it would continue to examine the matter and would cancel the bout if Graziano was not telling the truth. Hurt Jockey Near Death Miami (U.R) Young jockey Richard A. Thompson, who was thrown during Monday's racing at Gulfstream Park was in "still very critical" condition Tuesday at Mt. Sinai hospital following a brain operation. The 22-year-old rider was thrown from his mount during the fourth race and another horse stepped on his face. Physicians said the horse had apparently caught him "solid ly" on the face. He was not ex pected to live. The accident occurred when Thompson, riding Eternal Great along the rail in about fifth or sixth, position at the three eighths pole, pulled up on the reins when he was "shut off." As he pulled up, Eternal Great stumbled, throwing Thompson under the pack of horses. TO PITCH FIVE Lakeland, Fla. (U.R) Art Hutteman hopes to pitch five in nings Tuesday as he makes his third appearance of the spring on the mound for the Detroit Tigers against the Philadelphia Athletics' B-team. Baseball Commissioner Believes Coast Headed for Major Status Portland (U.R) Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick said Tuesday he believed the Pacific Coast league's new "open" clas sification is going to "work and that the PCL was headed forma jor league status. Frick, who "authored" the open status plan, said it was the "most practical approach" to ward recognizing the growth and development made by the PCL in recent years. "It's much more practical than attempting to take one or two towns away from the Pacific Coast and placing them in the majors," he said. Just when the league will jump to major status is hard to say, Frick added, because so many factors are involved. Frick, on a two-day pleasure and business trip through the Pacific Northwest, said he also was confident that the PCL's ban on major league teams play- Strong Offenses, Defenses Matched in NCAA Tourney Corvallis (U.R) A skillful defensive team pitted against high, wide and handsome scor ing teams is the way the NCAA, regional basketball playoffs stack up here Friday and Sat urday. Oklahoma City university with the second best defensive record in the nation, will be up against the Wyoming Cowboys, the UCLA Bruins and Santa Clara, a coast independent. They will be competing for the Hght to appear in the final playoffs at Seattle March 25-26. The Chiefs of Oklahoma' City have allowed opposing teams an average of only 47.5 points per game and have won 18 out of 25. Wyoming's average is 51.5 points allowed opposing teams. The Bruins are known best for their fast-breaking offensive drivers. They have allowed 59.4 points to be scored against them per game and Santa Clara 57.1.
