California Storm Moves Into Rockies; 4 Persons Lose Lives Denver (U.R) A late winter storm that hit southern Califor nia with rain, snow and a baby tornado rolled east toward the Rockies Monday on a long north south front. . The storm, which produced a week-end of bitter weather in the Los Angeles area, was lash ing portions of Arizona, Nevada. Wyoming, Utah and western New Mexico with rain and snow. Four Persons Die In southern California, where four persons lost their lives as a result of the combination of bliz zards, rain and windstorms, skies were generally clearing. But the effects of the storm were just beginning to be felt ?n states to the east. Ely, Nev., reported 20 inches of snow at 5:30 a.m. There were varying degrees of precipitation. Snow fell in western Wyoming and Utah and snow and rain showers in Arizona. Some rain and snowfall was reported in western New Mexico. The weather bureau said the storm probably would beat itself out on the western slope of the Rockies in Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, although some of its effects probably would be felt in eastern Wyoming. Utah Roads Open The snowfall was mostly light over Utah with roads open and no known casualties or suffer ing. The California storm was capped by a freak twister that swept through Santa Monica THOSE WERE THE DAYS Newport, R..I. (U.R) An as semblage of yachts in Newport harbor in 1930 represented per haps the largest concentration of pleasure craft in one place in the world at the same time. The at traction was the International Yacht Races for the America's Cup. Some 500 motor craft and about 800 sailboats filled the harbor. yesterday. It whirled a half-completed skiff through the air, blew down a tile garage building onto three cars, knocked over a brick chimney and fireplace, shattered windows and collapsed several boats. Hew Drug Saving Pregnant Women Washington U.R) A new drug extracted from a poisonous lily is saving pregnant women and their unborn babies at -Gal-linger hospital here. The drug, vergitryl, is an anti dote for hig blood pressure and associated poisons which some times accompany pregnancy, ac cording to Dr. Frank A. Finner ty, Gallinger physician. Vergitryl can prevent preg nant victims of high blood pres sure from going into convulsions of eclampsia, an epileptic-like fit at childbirth, Finnerty said. The fits are fatal sometimes to the mother and give her infant only a 50-50 chance to survive. Doses of vergitryl are adminis tered by intramuscular injection to relieve the non-convulsive symtoms . of high blood pres sure swellings of the hands, feet, and face, severe headaches, and violent spells of nausea. Convulsive patients get smal ler doses directly into the veins. The blood pressure drop and re sulting relief of the symptoms is rapid, Finnerty said. Of the first 114 patients treat ed with the drug; the results were excellent in 92 cases, good in 18, fair in three, and poor in one, he reported. . . The National Geographic So ciety reports that 1,500,000.000 menhaden, a catch exceeding that of any other fish species, were hauled out of American waters in 1931. The total is esti mated to equal one-fourth - of U. S. commercial fishery pro duce for that year. The fish, a member of the her ring family, is an unpopular one with the American chef. De scribed as "oily, mealy and bony," the menhaden's chief claim to fame is its oil. Menhaden oil. manufactured by more than 30 plants set up along the Atlantic coast for its processing, is used in making soap, paint, linoleum, water proofing compound and in tem pering steel. What is left over after oil extraction is ground into farm animal feed and used for fertilizer. The menhaden is known by many alliases to its marine hunter. It is labeled everything from old-wife, greentail. and pogy to bugfish and whitefish. About a foot long and weigh ing three quarters of a pound when fully grown, the men haden is pursued in specially- built boats ranging from 85 to 150 feet in length. Its favorite habitat ' is the shallow coastal waters, where it swims close to the surface and in huge, closely massed formations. As many as 500,000 of these fish have been known to be trapped in a single catch. Tax Money Saved As Engineers Learn Jobs Washington (U.R) U. S. Army engineers are saving taxpayers thousands of dollars while they learn their job. The engineers have been using Prince William Park, Virginia. as a practice ground on which they learn bridge and roadbuild- ing and repairing instead of their own grounds at Fort Belvoir, Va. The park as a result has re ceived the benefit of new bridges and new roads that otherwise would have been demolished on the grounds of the army post. This novel and constructive use of army manpower, has given to the park "at least $400,000 worth of free work from the en gineers," according to Conrad L. Wirth, director of the National Park Service. Blood Cements Unify Among Employees Lorain, O. (U.R) Life-saving blood serves to cement unity among the 227 employes of the Nelson Stud Welding Co. here. When the daughter of one of the worker was seriously ill last year, fellow employes vol unteered to give their blood in an effort to save her life. The little girl died but the idea didn't.
