10-Year-Old Boy Reports President Truman's Talk Editor' Hole: Tommy Piper. 10-year-old, fiilh grade student at the Campus school, labora , lory school of tha Lock Haven. Tom my, a grandson of William Piper Sr., president of the : Piper Aircraft Corp.. is a re porter on "The Campus." his school paper. He wrote the fol lowing account of Mr. Tru man's appearance for the United Press. By Tommy Piper '(Written for the United Press) ' New York, March 15 (U.R) "Hail to the Chief!" A song called "Hail to the Chief was played as the presi dent came into the grand ball room. As he came into the room the people stood up and clapped for two or three minutes. After that the president came in with some Secret Service men with him and at least one policeman at every door. Picture Taken Then a man that was with the president went down the stairs and sat down at a round table in front of the stage, that was his aide. After the president had been seated and everybody else had been seated a man from the back of the room on the balcony called everybody's attention to a green light that was blinking off and on and said that he wanted to take everybody's picture and to look that way. So everybody looked that way to get their pic ture taken. r After he had done that we started eating. On the back of the stage there was a lot of flags of all colors and in the frount of the stage there was a long table with chairs in back of it. Fiction "Stores" Awards Next some men came in with a big cake. After everybody had finished eating they had a man stand up and tell the awards for poetry, articals, and fiction stores. Then a woman came out to announce the awards for the junior high school. Then they introduced the May or of New York citey and a man from Clombia university. Then the president made a speech about the press and being a news paper man. Then he talked about a convention they had when he was a little boy at the age of sixteen. Then he .told about what he had done when he was young. He told about how he had voted for Wilson and thought that Wilson was one of the greatest presidents . of all time. - Reason for Trip Then he told about why he had come from Florida. The rea son was very simple. He had come to talk to' us so we would grow up to be good men like him. Then he talked about being on a newspaper when he was a little boy. Then he told us that we might end up in the White House just like him. Then he said that being in the government was tiresome but very nice and also that every nation needs a government. He also talked about the in crease in rich people. He also said that if Wilson had been able to have his own wishes there wouldn't have been a World War II. I thought the whole thing was pretty good. (See Story Page One) Confession May Clear Six-Months-Old Crime Portland (U.R) Los Angeles authorities today notified Port land police that a man has ad mitted he shot a person in an attempted hotel robbery on 4th avenue here six months ago. Portland police believed that the confession may clear up the mystery shooting July 7 oflast year when a night clerk at the Grove hotel was shot in the ab domen. , The victim, Charles Christy Vetter, survived the shooting. Los Angeles police said the confession came from Lin Bow Dong, believed to be Chinese. Only Woman Candidate In Presidential Race Topeka, Kan. (U.R) The "only woman candidate for President" declared herself Fri day. "Dear Sir: " Please put my name on the ballot in Kansas for President of the U. S. A.," read a note received by Paul Shana han, secretary of state of Kansas. The message was signed, "Mrs. Agnes Waters, the only woman candidte for President of the U. S. A.,"" and listed the re turn address as 936 New York avenue, N. W., Washington, D. C. Shanahan had no comment. Big Jet Bomber Ready for Test Seattle (U.R) The second Boeing Stratofortress, new eight- jet heavy bomber and sister ship to the XB-52, was rolled from the factory to the runway Satur day for ground tests before taking its first flight. The new ship is known as the YB-52. It will be the first of the two "monster" jet bombers to fly. However, officials said the Air Force had not announced when 'the maiden flight would be made. As was the case with the first Stratofortress, which was taken off the assembly line last No vember, the YB-52 will undergo tests on engines, functional sys tems, equipment, steering, brak ing, engine acceleration and control surface action. ;v Meanwhile, the XB-52, first of the Stratofortresses, has been retuir.ed to the factory for in stallation of equipment which was not available at the time of its roll out. The iron ore resources of Min nesota were depleted by steel production approximating 109,- 000,000 tons in 1951. ' Five Marines Injured While En Route Home Yuba City, Calif. (U.R) Five Marines, on their way to their homes in the Pacific Northwest after being honorably dis charged, were injured Saturday when their sedah hit a railroad semaphore five miles north of here. " - .4 Sgt. Andrew D. O'Quist, 21, of Seattle, the driver of the car, and Cpl. Edgar Allen Reel, 23, of -Woodenville, Wash., suffered critical injuries. They were taken to Yuba City Community hospital. Less seriously injured were Cpl. Richard Dale Bauman, 20, of Spokane, Wash.; Cpi. Donald James Perry, 18, of Seattle; and Cpl. Larry Bruce McGoldrick, 18, of Seattle. They were in Beale Air Force base hospital where attendants said they were in "good condition." Fire, Auto Accident Kill Washington Men Tacoma (U.R) Two 38-year-old men met death here Satur day one by fire, one by auto. Howard Wiegand was found burned beyond recognition - in his home early Saturday; Rich ard Jackson was killed when the car in which he was riding failed to negotiate a curve on Park avenue, near Parkland. Sunday. March 16. 1952 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Radioactive Gold Wires Used I n New Treatment of Cancer Columbus, O. (U.R) A gold wire about the size of fine sew ing thread offered a new method Saturday in the treatment of cancer. . , . Dr. William G. Myers, a medi cal researcher at Ohio State university where the .treatment has been developed, emphasized that the method was no "cure." Improvement '' " It does, however, give promise of improvements over radium, cobalt-60 and radon, currently in use, Myers said. The method of treatment is similar' to that of radioactive co balt needles. Small lengths of gold wire are sent to the atomic energy plant at Oak Ridge, Tenn., where they are made radioactive in an atom ic pile. The wire, encased in a lead container, then is flown here. Diameter of Needle This wire is then inserted in gold tubing, which has a dia meter about the size of a sewing needle. The tubing is then cut into various lengths, depending on the amount of radiation de sired and these inserted into the cancerous tissued Cobalt needles must be - re moved after they have been in cancerous tissue a few days,' to prevent harmful radiation burns. This is one advantage of the gold needles, which can be left in the tissues until they "burn out." , Lose Radioactivity Myers explained that the tub ing and wire combination, known as "seeds," rapidly lose the-r radioactivity. At the end of 2.7 days, the seeds have lost half their radioactivity. By the end of Bine days, less thaa 10 per cent of the original radioactive strength remains.' ; Tried on Four Types Myers said the new method has been tried on tour different j tvoes of cancer in mice and proved effective in all cases. The researchers plan to contmue their studies of cancers in rats before they attempt to use the treatment on humans. The doctor said he foresaw the day when radioactive gold seeds will be kept in stock at large medical center for use as soon as a cancer is discovered. STATION MANAGER QUITS Seattle (U.R) O. W. Fisher resigned Friday as general man ager of radio station KOMO and was succeeded by W. W. Warren, KOMO program manager and treasurer. Fisher will continue in his capacity as president of KOMO and Fisher's Blend Stations. The area of Alaska is more than twice that of Texas. - ALDON IS COMING! Cooks and Stewards Union Found Guilty of Contempt Seattle (U.R) Superior Judge Malcolm Douglas has found the National Union of Marine Cooks and Stewards Ind. in contempt of court. His action Friday was at the request of 93 former union mem bers who were awarded total judgments of $475,000 in a libel action here last year against the union. The judgments of $5,000 each were for damages caused when a union officer circulated a bul letin indirectly charging-the 93 men with being strikebreakers. The judge found the union in contempt because it had not turned over $298,000 in U. S. government bonds held in the union's San Francisco strike fund. The union had been or dered to place the bonds in the COWBOY SINGS BLUES Hollywood (U.R) Cowboy Singer Tex Williams sang the blues today because a burglar who looted his home couldn't resist his two pearl-handled six shooters.
