CaL COMPROMISE WITH In the booklet The Constipa tion Habit and Colon Hygiene, available on written request if you inclose 23c and stamp ed self-addres- ed envelope, I say: Constipa tion is merely a habit. Any one can break the habit who has the mind and the will to do so. Ah, but there Is the rub. Many victims of the habit are weak-minded and what can you expect. From early infancy, when the neighborhood Saireygamp har ried the uneducated mother into plying the infant with castor oil, the poor geeks have been taught that a "good" physic is indispen sable in the prevention or treat ment of any ailment. For a doc to to question or ridicule this traditional idea is equivalent to Dr. Brady PHYSIC butting one's head against a stone wall but from long prac tice my head is hardened to it, so I say anyone can break the constipation habit who ha the mind and the will to do so. I call it constipation habit only to get the attention of you so-and so's who have it It should be called interference habit, for mischievous interference with the natural or physiological auto nomic or automatic regulation or control of the digestive tract is the cause of the trouble in nearly every instance. The castor oil given the young infant by Igno rant or irresponsible persons is particularly objectionable be cause the catharsis produced by castor oil is followed by a day or two of constipation that's why castor oil is prescribed for acute diarrhea. Not that the castor oil itself does the infant so much harm, but imagine what will happen to the unhappy baljy in the twenty four to forty-eight hours the bowel remains locked after such catharsis! And from there on. OVER 10 YEARS AGO... &W& to be "S3 Tcday...Ferguscn's Daring Ideas are being Ceded by f.tav. . . but Ecsalled by Hsnel Look around and dose by, you'll probably see an all-gray tractor with a chevron-shaped name plate on the hood front! If it's the new, more powerful Ferguson Tractor with Talve-in-head power, you'll see the name "FERGUSON" on the chevron. If it's an earlier model, you'll find the words "FERGUSON SYSTEM" on the chevron. Both tractors are built around the complete, genuine Ferguson System! Look around again (or read the tractor ads) and you'll see that almost every tractor manufac turer has adapted one or more of the basic features of the Ferguson System. But, today, you get that complete Ferguson System ONLY in the Ferguson Tractor. - Want proof? WILKEN FARM Slop in today or can us soon EQUIPMENT Your New FERGUSON Dealer For the Medford Trade Area E. Among the minor tasks, the one I have always strongly dis liked is putting a ribbon on a typewriter. However, today I put one on easily and in record time. That is, record time for me. I used a method shown me by a typewriter expert. How quickly can your secretary change a typewriter ribbon? Should be done in less than a minute. Phobias If a woman is afraid to go out alone it may be she is hiding from herself that she is longing for a forbidden love affair, but fears the consequence. That's ,what Robert W. Marks states in an article on phobias, titled, 'Tavorite Fears." appearing in the current issue of the Cosmo politan Magazine. Seems every little phobia has a meaning all its own. Few persons suffering from such fears realize the cause. Anyway, if you are a woman who fears to. go out alone perhaps you better not say too much about it. Among The Married. A new Yorker, who states he has been engaged in retail sell ing for thirty-five years, says he cannot understand why so many husbands permit their wives to "do their thinking and talking. He refers, of course to those oc casions when a man goes out to buy a hat, suit, tie, etc., and brings his wife along. This vet eran retailer says the spectacle of a husband completely domin ated by his wife depresses him, He views it as "a tragic situa tion." He does not underestimate the value of a wife's advice to a husband on a shopping tour, but he says a husband should take it or leave it. That he should assert his manhood and buy what he likes best. Favorite Star My favorite western film star of all time was Tom Mix. He was a real cowboy. In his early Well dp I know that few physic addicts will make the five-day test described in the booklet. And only in deference to the pre vailing medical practice do I of fer victims of the habit a com promise. It seems to be the consensus of physicians that a tapering off plan of treatment is the solution in many cases of chronic consti pation. In the first places, very small doses of cascara segrada, taken two or three times a day, give better results than much larger doses taken once a day. It ap pears that small enough doses of this laxative have a tonic action on the bowel, while larger doses irritate, cause spasmodic contrac tions and griping. With cascara used as a tonic rather than as a cathartic, . according to Bastedo (Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics) the Improved bowel function may continue after the cascara has been pro gressively reduced till finally it is dispensed with altogether. I can go along with this on one condition: Provided each small dose of cascara is combined with a small dose of vitamin Bl, thia mine. Thiamine is the best tonic I know for smooth or involunt ary muscle in any part of the body the alimentary tract wall, the heart muscle the ultra-refined food in our modern diet Is generally deficient in thiamine content. QUESTIONS ANSWEBS What For? If a person la totally deaf fat one ear and the other ear la perfect would a hearing aid be of any help? (Mrs. H. M.) Answer I am, and I dont think so. Of course I haven't tried one and I don't intend to. My stars, what for? "Clinic" Bat Cat tamer Hypnotized What doctor would use a speculum to find out whether a complaint is from hemorrhoids or other causa? Only a clinic does this . . . (H. M. L.) Fields was fond of telling of his first meeting with Mix in South Afri ca at the time of the Boer War. Fields asked Mix what he was doing in South Africa. Said Mix: "Ob, I thought I'd get me in on this fuss." Asked Fields: "On which side?" Answered Mix: "Either side. I hlven't had a chance to check up on what they're fighting about. It's all one to me, anyhow." Sidelights. The lucky numbers of Aries (March 21-April 19) born people are one and two and their lucky day is Tuesday, or so say the stargazers . . . The football team of the Auburn, N. Y., Theologi cal Seminary, once used books Of the Bible for signals instead of numbers. That is, in giving the signal for a play the quar terback would call out: "Jonah, Job, Daniel, Deuteronomy and Micah." Another Argument, Who wrote the smash song hit, "Dardanella"? My under standing is there was a vaude ville act billed as "Johnny Black and Dardanella." Johnny wrote the song in question and named it after his partner, "Dar danella." He submitted it to Fred Fisher, who published it. The song was not a hit at first. Fisher had Arthur Lange fur nish a new arrangement for it. It then went over with a bang. In a year it sold 2,500,000 copies of sheet music and nearly 7,000,000 records! Fisher Is re ported to have stated he made more than $1,000,000 on "Dar danella." Briefly.
