Knappa earned its final berth by defeating host school Sub limity 49 to 40 in B tourney play last night while Rogue River knocked over Mapleton 46 to 42 to become the other finalist. Wallowa Friday won the right to fourth place by virtue of a 52 to 48 win over Powers in the consolation round. Echo elimin toH r-nivpr bv a 73 to 39 count. which tied the tournament's team scoring record. Mapleton and Sublimity got third place play-off rights. Mapleton's loss was its first in 28 games. Rogue River's Byron vii lud the winner's attack with 14 points while John Peckham was high scorer lor Mapieion with 12 Doints. Knappa took a 23 to 15 half- time lead over Sublimity ana hn went on to win. Knappa's Max Kelley potted 23 points while Duane Heuberger was high point man for Sublimity A third period rally by the Wallowa quintet paid on in vic ' tory as Art Weatherford paced h attark with 15 points. But Duane Brady of Powers won the high point honors in the game with 22 counters. Echo took a 30 to 15 halftime lead over Culver and then coast ed to victory as John Reynolds potted 28 points. (U.R) Southwtst Texas Stat of San Marcos controlled the consola tion gam of th 14th annual NAIB Baskaiball tournament tonight, defeating Portland university. 78-88. Kansas City (U.R) Murray, Ky., State college and Southwest Missouri State college won Fri day semi-final scuffles in the NAIB championship' tournament here. They were slated to vie in the finals Saturday night. (U.R) The baseball career of Hal New houser, one of the great left handed pitchers of the past decade, hung in the balance Saturday, but the king of the American league southpaws wasn't worried at all. "I'll either make it or I won't," he said. "If I find I can't help the club, that it hurts me too much to pitch, I'll throw in the glove as an active player. There is nothing more pitiful to my mind than a ball player who tries to carry on when he doesn't have it any more." Newhouser was of little help to the Detroit Tigers last year because of a chronic shoulder ailment. He wound up with a record of six victories against six defeats, but, admitting he had a bad season, insisted, "that with the breaks it could have well been nine victories against three defeats." , "I know I'll never be the pitch er I was, but unless my trouble kicks up again, I feel I might be able to win 12 or. 15 games for the Tigers this year, So far, I've felt fine and while I still am not using my full overhand mo tion, I'm hopeful I'll be able to pitch about every six days. I'm only 31, but this is my 13th season with the Tigers and in a stretch like that any one is going to start running out of gas." He plans on taking it easy until the season opens. Immediately after Spring field's success, fourth-seeded Murray surprised Portland, Ore., university, 58-57. The Kentucki ans staved off a closing rally by the far westerners, who had supplied the tournament's No. 1 upset in the quarterfinals, by de feating defending champion and top-seeded Hamline of St. Paul. Murray jumped to a 35-27 half time lead, held a 45-42 edge when the final quarter got under way and Portland, desperate de spite its rally, never was able to catch up. . SPORTSlULLETIIIS Buffalo, N. Gehrmann had been scheduled to com pete this year but was forced to withdraw due to illness in his family. Mizell, who struck out five and did not allow a hit in three innings when he made his first appearance of the spring against the Boston Braves, said he had received notification from his Mississippi draft board of the change in classification. Several others not listed specifically by the NCAA were included in confer ence rulebooks, and rome of the points covered by the national eroun were more severely re stricted by the conferences. The only bans suggested by the presidents which were not covered by rules already in ef- Y Olympics To Be Held This Week Medford YMCA will stage its second annual Olympics compe tition during school spring vaca tion, March 17 through 22 There will be a program of five events for boys. Age groups and time of com petition will be: Ages 9-10, it a.m.; 11-12, 9:45 a.m., and junior high, 10:30 a.m. First event will be the basket ball throw on Monday for the greatest number of goals in one minute. On Tuesday baseball ac curacy is set with throws at a target. The standing broadjump is on the Wednesday slate with chin-ups on Thursday. A potato race . is the Friday event. Sat urday will be make-up day. Winner Told In the 9 and 10 group last year frank Albert won every contest but the chin-up in which Teddy Lawson was victor. James Gordon won in chin-ups in 11 and 12 rivalry and Donald Gor don nabbed the others. Frank Rector won the junior high bas ketball and baseball events, Ev erett Kastner took the broad jump and Raymond DeMarrs the potato race and chin-ups. All of last year's winners got trophies and second and third placers got ribbons. The awards will be duplicated this year. The Y is expected to be a bee hive of activity during the holi days. Friends, and members will be welcomed as guests in both gym and swimming pool activi ties. Paul Lehner was the only hold out on the squad. He asked for permission to work out in his bare feet. Lopez admitted he was wor ried about what the long stretch of foul weather would do to his pitching staff. Larry Doby left the, squad Sat urday to play with the major league all-stars when they meet the Hollywood Stars in a charity game today. Moratorium Imposed , On the post-season games the NCAA had imposed a moratori um on Its members to prevent any commitment for games after next New Year's Day, pending study by a committee of the evils of such contests. The ruling meant that no plans could be made for a 1953 national basket ball tournament. The NCAA and its conferences had restricted spring football practice to 20 sessions in 30 days and out of season basketball drills to 20 sessions in 24 days. It will be possible under the presidents' rules to have out of season basketball drills starting November 1, before opening of the season.. Likewise it will be possible to have post-season bowl football games on the first Sat urday of December, as most schools finish their season before that date. Babe Zaharias Near New Record In Golf Tourney Augusta Ga. (U.R) Mrs. Mil dred (Babe) Zaharias - clipped off a smooth, third-round 73 Saturday to soar within easy tossing distance of a new wom en's titleholders' tournament rec ord. The Babe, getting better each day, copped a 220-stroke for the 13th annual event over the hilly Augusta Country club course, leaving her nearest rivals seven strokes behind. Mrs. Zaharias can break the tournament record with a lei surely 77 today on the final round of the blue-ribbon classic for women golfers and the Babe reported happily that she is steadily improving. The record for 72 holes is 298, set two years ago by the Babe herself, one of the few profes sionals who have captured a title that heretofore had proven to be a good luck piece for the amateurs. . Unless she blows sky high to day Mrs. Zaharias will become also a three-time winner. She won the title as a part of her sensational winning streak of 1947, and won it again in 1950. Her nearest competitor was Louis Suggs, of Carrollton, Ga., with 232. Van port To Be Known As Portland State Portland (U.R) Vanport college, now officially renamed the day class division of the new Portland extension center, announced Saturday it will re tain the nickname of "Vikings" for its athletic teams. But the Vanport name will be dropped and the school will be known as the Portland State Vikings. ' Dusky Felton of Detroit was disqualified by referee Harry Kessler at 1:31 of the sixth round "for holding and for fail ure to obey the referee' in his scheduled 10-rounder with un beaten young Johnny Saxton of New York. .' . ; AAU Tourney Opens Today Denver .R) The 1952 Na tional AAU Basketball tourna ment gets underway here-today, with 10 games scheduled for the opening day. The opening game of the tour nament will match the Casper Bluebirds of Casper, Wyo., against Jussel Electric of Den ver. The Towers Hardware of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sheridan Exporters of Billings, Mont., will be the last game of the day. The Phillips Oilers, top-seeded team of the tournament, will play their first game against the winner of the Towers-Sheridan game. Other seeded teams include the Dayton Air-Gems, REA Trav elers of Artesia, Allen Bradley, the Sioux City Jamcos and the Oakland Pacific Engineers. The Portland Panelshake Sid ing team, Oregon state AAU champions, plays One Day Clean ers of Springfield, 111., at 7:30 p.m. today in the opening round of the tournament. Yankee Catcher Escapes Injury Miami, Fla. (U.R) New York Yankee Catcher Yogi Berra es caped serious injury Saturday when he stumbled over first base and was carried off the field in the first inning of the world champions' scheduled game with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The game was called before the Yankees finished batting in the, first inning because of high winds and rain. . Berra collapsed over first base as he tried to beat out a double play ball in the first inning. He was carried off the field and taken to a hospital1 for x-rays. Infielder Billy Martin had suf fered two broken bones in his right ankle only a few days previously. Berra was found to be suffer ing from a sprained ligament and a ruptured blood vessel in the ankle. He i; expected to be side lined several days.
