Maxell 13. 1952 Spiegelberg Assumes Head Grid Duty After 4 Years as Assistant Fred Spiegelberg, whose elec tion 33 head football mentor at Medford high school was an nounced Wednesday, moves up to the No. 1 Black Tornado grid iron post after four seasons as assistant with line tutoring du- . ties and is largely responsible for development of a forward wall which may prove his prin cipal source of strength for the 1952 campaign. Spiegelberg took his first prep coaching job when he came to Medford in the faU of 1948 but it was not his first exper ience at coaching. As a captain in Army special services, the ex- Washington State college flank man mentored the Berlin com mand eleven to the European theater championship in 1946. He also coached the Cougar freshmen in 1942. 3 Cougar Letters After an all-around prep ath letic career at Omak, Wash. Spieselberer entered WSC in 1938. He played freshman foot ball and won varsity letters three years. In 1941 and 1942 he won coast boxing togas and was runner-UD for a national title in 1941.- He remained at the school in the ROTC setup in 1942-1943 school year, was varsity boxing coach and obtained his bachelor of arts degree. Spiegelberg was in the army four years, attaining the rank of captain and serving as an mfan try company commander. After the war he took occupation duty. He returned to WSC and got his bachelor of education de gree in 1948. With Spiegelberg taking over the head grid chore, Lee V. Ragsdale, grid boss for the past four seasons, moves into the job of head of the physical education department and the summer re creation program of the Med ford school system. His pro grams will develop material for future high school teams. Ragsdale-coached football ag gregations at Medford high have won 26, lost nine and tied two. They have outscored the opposi tion a total of 832 points to 300. Duquesne, Dayton Favored in NIT New York (U.R) The classy Iron Dukes of Duquesne were favored to whip the crowd-pleasing Explorers of La Salle in a semi-final game of the National Invitation Basketball tournament Thursday night and skyscraping Dayton was picked to beat scrap py St. Bonaventure in the other Duquesne was listed a five point pick and Dayton was the choice by three points. Duquesne, top-seeded in the play at Madison Square Garden, was given the nod because of the power it displayed in trounc ing Holy Cross by 10 points in a quarter-final and because it de feated La Salle during the reg ular season, 71 to 60. & V ; W FRED SPIEGELBERG New Grid Chief Sugar Ray, Bobo Olson Mix Tonight San Francisco (U.R) World middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson puts his title on the block Thursday night against Honolulu's rising young star, Carl (Bobo) Olson, before a sell out crowd of 9,000 fans in the Civic auditorium. Robinson is such a. prohibitive favorite to win that there is vir tually no betting on the battle, which will get under way at 8:30 p.m. PST. , The champion not only expects to win but to prove to some doubters that he hasn't slipped in his ability to put away a foe. He will be gunning for his 131st victory in 135 fights. In the past he has won 130, lost two and had two draws. He never has been knocked out, but he has kayoed 83 opponents. . Tiders Gain Tourney Spot Eugene (U.R) University high of Eugene became the 14th team to qualify for the state class "A" tournament Wednes day night by whipping Junction City 53-39 here. Spots still to be decided are District 3 between Redmond and Bend and District 1 between Vale and La Grande. Eight million persons spent $100,000,000 for dancing lessons in the United States last year. 75 Aspirants For Tornado Track Team Medford high's track and field squad with 16 lettermen back from 1951 is eyeing its chances for a fifth straight state cham pionship with much euthusiasm despite alternately good and bad practice ,weather. " ' A total of 75 aspirants have reported to Head . .Coach Bob Newland. The mentor has been down several days because of an influenza attack and Coach Fred Spiegelberg has been carrying on in his place. . , The Black Tornado's first full distance meet will be on March 29 against Klamath Falls here. The lettermen include four youths of last year's state track meet team. They are Ed Bing ham, high jump and javeline: Don Spinas, quarter-mile v and relay; Roland Thompson, pole vault, and Frank Baize, relay. There is considerable interest in track at the junior high school also. The turnout is 55 ninth graders, 10 eighth graders and 45 seventh graders. Eagle Point" Starts Work On Diamond Eagle Point Eagle Ponit high school, with a turnout of 32, has commenced baseball workouts. There are seven returning let termen around whom Coach Jerry Mosby will build the 1952 Easle nine for rivalry in the JDJ league and District No. 6 A-2. The youths back from last year are Darold Barritt, third base; Don Cattenach, shortstop; Lee Pettegrew, sec ond base; Wayne Gillaspey, catcher; Davy Johnson and Dick Chamberlain, pitchers, and John ny Millard, outfielder. The Eagles will begin a 15- game schedule on March 25 when they travel to Rogue River. Others out for baseball are Bill Caldwell, Charles Eccleston, Gene Eccleston, John Fox. Bill Littlefield,JVern Baldwin. Elilon Mason, Henry Pech, Jack Pech, Jim Parks, Bob Stewart. Sources at University of Cali fornia and Stanford confirmed the new edict, but refused to be quoted. Recently the PCC had voted to reduce spring training to 20 days in a 30-day period from the old rule of 30 days practice. A California man told United Press that he believed the new edict from the presidents could be traced to the Northwest schools, where some universi ties had been charging admission for spring practice in intrasquad games. B Tourney Begins on Salem Floor Salem (U.R) .The first game of the 1952 Oregon State Class B High School Basketball tour nament got underway at Wil lamette university's court at 2:30 p.m. Thursday with Rogue River, District 5 champions, meeting Sowers, the runner-up in last year's tourney and this year's District 4 champion. Missing from the annual event is 1951 champion Phoenix, which was put out of the running by Rogue River. The opener was to be followed by a contest between Wallowa of District 8 and Mapleton from District 3. Mapleton has a 26 game winning streak. ' Thursday night's first round will pit Echo of District 7 against Sublimity of District 2. Knappa of District 1 and Culver of Dis trict 7 will meet in the final game of the opening round. Carter Gets Nod in Bout Chicago (U.R) Lightweight champion Jimmy Carter, pleased by his split decision win over Luther Rawlings, was indefinite Thursday about his next fistic move. "I don't know about my plans now," said the champion from New York after getting the nod from two judges' but not from the referee in Wednesday night's 10-round non-title scrap with Rawlings before a small Chicago stadium crowd and the television cameras. Before the bout, Carter had said he would use the fight to test out whether Rawlings, rated the No. 1 lightweight contender, would receive a title shot soon. "I don't know," said the champ. "He's a pretty good fighter, but whether he gets a title fight, that's up to my manager." Rawlings, meanwhile, declared that he thought he won the battle and also that he thought he could knock out Carter in a title match.
