Square Dance Event
Planned in Ashland
Ashland A square dance
jamboree will be held in the
Ashland Junior high school gym
Saturday, March 15. beginning
it 8 p. m. under the auspices
of the Ashland YMCA Square
Dance club. The purpose of the
program is to raise funds to help
support youth activities of the
Ashland "Y".
Seven of the best square dance
callers In southern Oregon will
call the dances. They include
Gordon Kershaw, Jack Crump,
Bennie Parkhurst, Sam Conner,
Dan Neil, Gary Conrad and
John Neidermler.
Tickets are now on sale and
may be obtained from any mem
bers of the, Ashland "Y" Square
Dance club or at the Ashland
Y" building. Those who don't
square dance may. purchase
spectators' tickets.
SOOT BLAMED FOR RUNS
New York U.R) Soot was
blamed Wednesday for Tues
day's epidemic of runs in wom
en's nylon hose in the midtown
district. A spokesman for the
Du Pont Company, sole manu
facturer of nylon in women's
stockings, said soot, under spe
cial weather conditions, could
disintegrate nylon hosiery.

On this day when the news
is only so-so at best, we learn
that the Nizam of Hyderabad,
succumbing to an attack of the
itching foot, has broken vow
made 17 years ago and will go
on a trip outside his own do
main. He has picked New Deuu,
capital of Hindu India, as the
place.
It seems that away back in
1933 he got away from home,
and somewhere along the line
he took a rowboat trip and GOT
HIS FACE SPLASHED WITH
WATER. It upset him so that he
allowed as how he'd NEVER
AGAIN get away from his own
home bailiwick where he's
pretty hot stuff and I imagine
even the winds would think
twice before blowing water In
his royal face.-,
. But you know how it is. You
come home from a jaunt and you
hold up your hand and you take
the pledge. NOT ANY MORE,
you say. This tourist stuff isn't
what it's cracked up to be.
HOME is the place, you say.
BUT eventually
Oh, you know how it is.

Why?
Well, you see, it's like this
The' old boy has a 70-woman
harem, jnd he decided to take
along only 15 of them. The cor
respondent In New Delhi who
tells the story says: "Quite a
few of the girls wanted to come
along and seemed VERY DIS
APPOINTED when his exalted
highness decided to be selec
tive." Sure, if the 55 who were left
behind gang up on the Nizam
when he gets back and start
making life miserable for him,
he can order 'em hung up by
the thumbs and lashed with a
cat o' nine tails to boot but
I'll bet they still will find ways
to make him uncomfortable
when he gets home.
rpHE state of Hyderabad con-
tains about 82,000 square
miles. That's considerably smal
ler than Oregon. But it has 15
MILLION people. That's a lot of
people. These 15 million "people
create quite a lot of wealth, but
it isn't very well distributed.
The Nizam gets the bulk of it,
and the bulk of the rest goes
to his court favorites and if the
people have enough for a bowl
of rice and a cotton loin cloth
they think they're doing pretty
well.
'THAT'S India for you.
Somehow it riles me every
time this guy Nehru, who is the
big boss of Hindu India, starts
telling us Americans off as he
does frequently.
WHAT I really started out to
" say is this:
The DYNASTY of which this
current Nizam is the representa
tive, was founded away back in
1713 by an able sword wielder
named Asaf Jan. It has been go
ing on ever since.
Over in Hyderabad, they
don't worry -about who is going
to be the next candidate for
Nizam. They know. It will be
another of the tribe that has
been running things ever since
old Asaf Jah set up the system
nearly 250 years ago.
ALL the while, in Hyderabad,
the rich have been getting
richer and the poor have been
getting poorer, and I'd like to
close this piece with this state
ment: THAT ALWAYS HAPPENS
WHEN TOO MUCH POWER IS
HELD IN TOO FEW HANDS
TOO LONG.
TF, RIGHT here in America, we
should leave too much power
in too few hands too long, we'd
find eventually that most of the
pleasant things of life were
gravitating into the hands that
hold the power while the rest
of us would be living more and
more on the skim milk and the
potato peelings.
No lesson of history is plainer
than that

West Coast Sees
Improved Service
With Air Merger
Washington (U.R) West Coast
Airlines officials" told a Civil
Aeronautics Board examiner
Tuesday that a merger with Em
pire Air Lines would bring
about improved service in the
Pacific Northwest and an im
mediate savings of $248,000. -
H. A. Munter, executive vice
president of West Coast, said
that if a proposed merger of the
two companies is approved, in
creased utilization of both air
planes and employees will re
sult. He said it also would be
possible to build facilities to do
maintenance and overhaul work
now done by outside contrac
tors. R. A. Duwe, secretary-treasurer
of West Coast, also tsetif ied

ages expected from a merger.
Under the proposed agree
ment, West Coast would acquire
the stock of each of Empire's 17
stockholders and Empire then
would be dissovled. .
The agreement also states that
as a condition for the merger
there must be CAB approval
either of West Coast's applica
tion to extend eastward or of
Empire's application to extend
westward. Those applications
are being considered by the
board in a separate case. .
The merged company would
have routes bounded by Idaho
Falls, Ida., Spokane and Belling
ham. Wash., and Medford, Ore.
Points Cross at Yakima
New route segments requested
as a condition for the merger
would run between Spokane and
Portland, Ore., and between Se
attle and Richland-Pascc-Kenne-wick,
Wash. These two routes
would cross at Yakima, Wash.
Under cross-examination, Mun
ter testified that he did not ex
pect that any employees of
either company, represented by
the International Association of
Machinists, would be dismissed.
He said he would be willing to
have the CAB rule to that ef
fect in approving the merger.
He also said he expects no
pilots to be dismissed as a re
sult of the merger.

handsome Italian stage and

in seven or eight weeks. So these
days she wears dresses and lip
stick, smiles sweetly and is the
model of decorum.
"I'm very much in love with
someone extraordinary who
loves me back. That's security,"
said Shelley in a subdued voice,
and beamed across the restau
rant table at her spouse-to-be.
Plenty To Talk About
"We talk for days at a time.
We never run out of things to
talk about. And we haven't had
a fight since we met at a the
ater in Rome six months ago."
Romance has changed her,
she admits. She's not "so fran
tic", about winning an Oscar for
her highly-praised role in "A
Place in the Sun." She wants
more dramatic parts like that
one, too.
"Naturally I want to win, but
a year ago I would have been
desperate," she explained. "I
used to be involved with the cra
ziness of this town.
Rested in Hospital
"Last year I did six movies,
more than any other star. I
spent three week-ends in a hos
pital so I could rest where peo
ple couldn't get at me. I threw
up all the time. I can eat more
now.
"We don't take time to do
anything in this country. In It

. "I'm not so frightened about
money any more. I have some
body to take care of me now."
And who'll be the boss in the
family?
"What a question to ask ah
Italian man," shrugged Vittorio.
"We're going to live in a mod
est apartment," she added. "I'm
busy learning how to cook. I
love Italian food."
"I don't," said Vittorio. "I like
French food."
