SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, March 1L IU2 Bruins Bag Coast Championship With Victory Over Washington Lot Angelei U.R UCLA's mazing Bruins held the Pacific Coast Conference basketball championship Tuesday after their second win in three starts against the powerful Washing ton Huskies, rated the fifth best team in the country in the final United Press poll. The score was 60-50. The Bruin victory was a bitter disappointment to the tired Huskies, who hoped to avenge their earlier poor showing against the underdog Uclans. The Bruins surprised the Huskies and every one else last Friday night by handing them a 65-53 beating. The Huskies recovered enough for Saturday night's meeting to squeak out a narrow S3-50 victory. Meet Santa Clara The Bruin victory Monday night won them the right to meet Santa Clara, in the opening round of the four-team regional NCAA championship tournament March 21 at Corvallis. The great victory evens the count with the Huskies, who de feated the Bruins in two straight playoff games at Seattle last year, for the championship. After assuming a 6-4 lead in the first three minutes, the Bruins cooled off and Washing ton dumped in eight straight points in the next three minutes to take a 12-6 lead, looking as If they would run away with the ball game. Coma Back But Ronnie Livingston, Bruin ophomore guard and spark plug of the team, put UCLA back in the game with two con aecutive field goals, and Don Bragg followed with a push shot to tie the game at 12 all. The game was tied at 33-all at halftime, but the Huskies folded in the third quarter, getting only three- points. UCLA led 47-36. and that was the ball game. Six Huskies fouled out in the clos ing minutes in futile efforts to get the ball and get back in the contest. Livingston hit 18 points for the Bruins to top all scorer?. Bob Houbregs and Joe Cipriano had 14 each for the Huskies. Hoppe Has Third Victory in Two San Francisco (U.R) Willie Hoppe had his third straight vic tory in the world championship billiard tournament to his credit Tuesday. Hoppe defeated Jay Bozeman Of Vallejo, Calif., 50-37, in 42 innings Monday night. Bozeman got off to an early lead, but at the end of 16 innings Hoppe was in front, 18-10. He stayed ahead the rest of the way. Hoppe had a high run of five while Bozeman had a high, run of seven. Bozeman has a tourna ment record of one win and two losses. Kinrey Matsuyama of Japan won his second straight match when he defeated Irving Crane of Binghampton, N. Y., 50-44, in 48 innings. The "Iron Dukes," guided by "Coach of the Year" Donald Moore, will be scrapping for a semi-final berth opposite La Salle, which advanced Monday night with an upset 51-45 win over St. John's. And the St. Louis-Dayton winner will go into the semi-fi nals Thursday against St. Bon aventure, winner by 70-69 over Western Kentucky Monday night. Seattle Loses The Crusaders of Holy Cross must be rated as deep under dogs in their battle with the Two Teams Get Western NCAA Berths New York (U.R) Two more berths were filled in the NCAA basketball tournament Tuesday as Kansas was crowned Big Seven Conference champion and UCLA became the Pacific Coast Conference ruler. Kansas clinched its title by whipping Colorado, 72-55, at Boulder, Colo., Monday night as big Clyde Lovellette sank 41 points. UCLA won the "rubber game" in a best-of-three playoff against Washington at Los Angeles, 60 to 50. These two wins complete the entire field for the western NCAA regionals. In a double header at Kansas City, March 21, Kansas will play Texas Chris tian and St. Louis will meet New Mexico A. and M. On the same night in Corvallis, Ore., UCLA will clash with San ta Clara and Wyoming will play Oklahoma City. The two Kansas City winners will meet in a semi final and the two Corvallis win ners will meet in the other, both March 22. The western finals will be at Seattle, March 25. Only three of the eight teams for the eastern regionals already are picked Kentucky, North Carolina State and Illinois. tourney's No. 1 rated team, for they will be coming right back after a gruelling 77-72 win over Seattle in the third game of Mon day night's triple-header. It wasn't until only four minutes remained that the Cru saders took charge for their 24th win in 27 games. The Crusaders held O'Brien, only man in history to score 1,000 points in a single season, to three field goals but they lost two men fouling out against him and he added 15 free throws, a tourney record, for a total of 21 points. The five foot nine inch whiz thus finished the season with 1,051 points but he fell nine field goals short of the all time season record. U.R) Port land and Whitworth, the Pacific Northwest's two entries in the National Association of Intercol legiate Basketball tournament here, came through with open ing round victories Monday. Whitworth downed White water State of Wisconsin 71-60 and Portland edged Findlay col lege 84-82. Milton Harvest McGilvery canned a last minute tip-in to give Portland its win over Find lay. McGilvery also paced the Pilots' scoring with 22 points. Andy Johnson hit 18 for Port land. , Jim Doherty with 25 and Ralph Poison with 20 led Whit worth to its win over Whitewater. Raider Boxers Lose to Chico Ashland Chico State college boxers drubbed Southern Oregon college boxing team 7V4 to Vi point in a Far Western confer ence match held at Chico this weekend, Coach Bill Abbey re ported yesterday. Jim Mullin, SOC bantam weight, was the only member of the Red Raider squad able to hold his own against the vastly improved Chico club. As Top Team New York (U.R) The United Press board of coaches Tuesday chose the powerful Kentucky Wildcats as the national college basketball champion for the sec ond year in a row. Illinois' Big Ten champions were second and Kansas of the Big Seven conference was third in the final weekly ratings for the 1951-52 season. By winding up as the best in the land. Coach Adolph Rupp's men fulfilled the pre-season fore cast of the 35 leading coaches who make up the United Press rating board. Duquesne (21-1). was ranked fourth with one first place vote and 17d points, while the Wash ington Huskies (25-5) just edged Kansas State (18-5) for the next spot. After them in order came: St. Louis (22-6), Iowa (19-3), St. John's of Brooklyn (22-3) and Wyoming (27-6). Rubber Footballs OKd For Oregon Conference Portland (U.R) The Oregon Collegiate Conference voted here, Monday to make the use of rubber footballs for league games optional and to use them if asreed upon by respective coaches. Dr. Stephen Epler, president of Vanport College, was re elected president of the confer ence. Other officers included Dr. Winston D. Purvine, president of Oregon Technical Institute, vice-president, and Joe Holland, athletic director at Vanport, secretary-treasurer. TO COAST LEAGUE Mesa, Ariz. (U.R) Andy Var ga, 21-year-old southpaw pitch er, was assigned by the Chicago Cubs to their Los Angeles farm club in the Pacific Coast league Tuesday. Frank Van Dyke of Medford questioned the wisdom of the two schools in considering the construction cf million - dollar stad;ums at this time. UO Wants Funds The University of Oregon re quested the board purchase property at a cost of $55,000 to add to the site of its proposed stadium. Other board members said the joint-stadium idea had been rais ed before with locations varying from Junction City to Albany and Salem. "It has been explored over a period of years," said R. E. Kleinsorge, "and there never was a solution." Alumni Money Edgar W. Smith, board presi dent, said stadiums are built with alumni money and "we can't say where alums spend their money." "If the stadium issue has been settled," Van Dyke said, "I don't like it. I think times change. I may be alone here but I'm not alone in my part of the country. I think there should be one stadium." The joint stadium was talked down by the board and the re quest for the $55,000 was held in abeyance. Seventh Graders Win 13, Lose. Medford seventh erade basket- bailers outscored the opposition 471 to 247 in compiling a record of 13 wins and one loss during the season just finished. The youthful Bulldoss aver aged 29.7 points per game to rivals 17.6. Dick McLaughlin led the squad in scoring with 95 ooints. Eddie Murray was second high with 5b. The lone defeat suffered by the seventh graders was at the hands of a club using eighth graders, Oak Grove. Score was 46 to 40. Record of the Medford ites included two wins each over St. Mary's Grants Pass, Ashland, Crater and the Phoenix eighth grade varsity and junior varsity and one over the Shady Cove eighth grade. ; Coach Niles Smith had a squad of 18 players. Read Phone 2-5271 Plans Completed For Annual SOC Hoop Tournament Ashland More than 200 prep school basketball players, their coaches and fans will invade Ashland Thursday for the open ing of the 22nd annual invita tional B school basketball tour nament, according to Daniel Bulkey, tourney director. Seven teen schools will participate in the meet. Two of the original 19 schools entered in the meet were forced to drop out at the last minute, Bulkey reported. Powers won the district title in regular play this past week-end and will enter the state B tournament. Glendale asked to cancel its entry late Monday afternoon. Play will start at 9 a. m. Thursday and will end Saturday night with championship games. The tournament is a modified double elimination contest with the four top ranking clubs elig ible for awards. As in past sea sons, the outstanding player in the three-day meet will receive special commendation. To speed up tourney play and relieve congestion at Memorial Court, arrangements have been made to play six games at the Ashland Junior high school gym nasium, Bulkley reported. Two matches are scheduled there opening day and an additional four on Friday. Schools entered m the tourna ment include Canyonville, Mc Kenzie, Coburg, Elkton, Talent, Valsetz, St. Mary's of Medford, Prospect, Coos River, Bandon, Port Orford, Oakland, Jackson ville, Butte Falls, Paisley, Lor- ane and Mowhawk.
