UCLA Bounces Washington Quint rLp0a0Cpcn 65-53 in Coast League Play-Off Los Angeles (U.R Univer sity of California at Los Angeles Friday gained a one-game edge over University of Washington in the two-out-of-three series for the Pacific Coast conference championship. The Bruins, southern division winners, upset Washington, northern division champs, 65-53. - UCLA took command early in the game and controlled the ball throughout the contest de spite a height advantage held by the defending champions. The lead changed hands three times in the first 10 minutes of play and at the end of the first quarter the score stood at 19-19. In the second quarter, UCLA roared back and tallied nine points while holding Washing ton scoreless. Huskies Rally However, four minutes before the first half ended, the Huskies rallied to go out in front 35-34 at intermission. . UCLA was cold in the third quarter and ended the frame on the short end of a 53-43 count. The Bruins got hot again in the fourth quarter and took the initiative. UCLA displayed its ball-handling ability by keeping the ball from Washington throughout the last 10 minutes of play. Don Bragg of UCLA was high point man for the game with 19, followed by Washington's Bob Houbregs who tallied 18. Braden Elected OGA President Portland (U.R) T. Morris Braden of Portland Friday night was elected president of the Ore gon Golf association at the OGA's annual meeting. Braden succeeds Rege A. Ott of Portland. Tourney Data Sat Date of the OGA champion ship was set for June 23-29. The tourney wil be played over the Columbia - Edgewater club course in Portland. The state junior tournament will be held at Portland's Alderwood course June 16-20. The Champion of Champion event will be played at Eugene September 7 and the Father-and-Son tourney at Oswego August 24. MEDFORDv-JTRBUNl SWOBS Cal Rugby Team Downs Stanford , Stanford, Calif. U.R) A 28- yard drop kick by Max Howell In the last minute gained the University of California Rugby team a 9-6 victory over Stanford Saturday on a slow field at the loser's stadium. A penalty kick by Wing Fletch Metten, his second, had moved Stanford into a 6-6 tie with about 10 minutes left in the came. California's sensational block Les Richter, an all-American football star, accounted for the Bears' 6-3 halftime lead. Richter scored first on a run of about 30 yards. He pushed Cal into the halftime lead with a penalty kick from 15 yards out. CHIEFS TOP BONANZA FOR TOURNEY BERTH Grants Pass Tha Rogue River Chieftains won the right to contend for .state tourna ment honors here Saturday night by defeating Bonanza, 59 to 44. Tha win was tha sec ond for tha Chieftains in tha best two of three series. Bon anza copped ona of tha threa contests played. Rogue River flashed cham pionship form in the second half as tha Chieftains broke a 26 to 26 halftime tie and pulled away to a 14-point lead early in the final period. Tha Chieftains took a 12 to 9 margin in the opening period before being tied up at tha halftime break. They forged a 42 to 34 lead by the end of tha third canto and then ran over tha Antlers early in tha final quarter on quick baskets by Byron Kile. Jim Wehren and a pair by Jim Boulter. Boulter was tha scoring ace for tha Chieftains as ha poured 23 points through the hoop be fore fouling out of the con test lata in tha final quarter. Byron Kile tallied 16 for Rogue River and Jim Wehren collected 12 before being ejected on five personals in the last quarter. Hubble topped Antlers regulars with 12, but Hailey, playing in a substi tute's role, collected 13. C OJ.R-r North Carolina State college retained its long Southern Conference basketball supremacy in true championship form Saturday night, turning back a battling Duke team, 77 to 68, in the final game of the Southern Confer ence tournament despite a gal lant 27-point effort by All-American Dick Groat. Upholding veteran coach Ev erett Case's record of never hav ing lost a tournament game here, the Wolfpack surged from a 38 35 halftime deficit to win its sixth straight league crown. ' By beating Duke in the finals for the third straight year. State qualified for the NCAA playoffs starting March 22. This State team, playing with out individual stars, used blind ing speed and drive and grabbed control of the backboards with a slight height advantage. Led by lanky Bobby Speight and cap tain Lee Terrell, the Wolfpack completely outdistanced Duke in the furious finish. After the All-American Groat, Duke's captain, fouled out with' four minutes and six seconds to go, State spurned a freeze game and ran up the score. St. Mary's Graders First In High District Tourney Eagle Point The St. Mary's grade school team of Medford nabbed the Jackson county high school district grade school tour nament title here Saturday night by overwhelming Gold Hill, 39 to 16. The Gold Hill team put up a staunch battle but was un able to compete on even terms with the St. Mary's club. Laval Meunier was the big gun in the Knights' victorious effort as he hit the hoop for 23 points and scoring honors for the game. In the game for the consola tion title and third place in the tournament, the Talent grade school club topped Butte Falls, Oak Grove Team Victorious In Non-High Grade Tourney Oak Grove beat Howard 28 to 26 last night for the cham pionship of the non-high school district basketball tournament held in the Medford high school gymnasium. In other Saturday games Elk-Trail topped Lone Pine 20 to 17 for third place and Griffin Creek beat Evans Val ley 16 to 15 for fourth place. Trophies were awarded the top four teams. .... : In Friday afternoon "games Evans valley defeated Shady Cove 21 to 13 and Griffin Creek beat West Side 16 to 11. High scorers for thetwo games were Victor Rapp with 10 points for Evans Valley and Ralph Wier and Gary Metternich with 5 each for Griffin Creek and West Side respectively. The most exciting game of the tournament was the Friday night game between Howard and Lone Pine. The score seesawed back and forth throughout with How ard coming out on the long end of a 25 to 23 score. Burle Well- burn, diminutive H o w a r d Ken Dougherty, Alderwood smoothie, was high scorer with tournament chairman, 6aid Sat- 12 points. David Gault and Clif ford Pederson scored 7 each to keep Lone Pine in hot conten tion all the way. Friday's finale resulted in a 35 to 20 victory for Oak Grove over Elk-Trail. Bruce Kelling ton, Oak Grove, sharpshooter, scored 14 points for high point honors. Benny Walls showed speed and aggressiveness in scoring 9 points for Elk-Trail. ' The tournament was spon sored by Medford high school, and was directed by Lee Rags dale with the help of the coach ing staff and high school students. Rogue Valley CC Invited To Play Portland U.R) The Rogue Valley Country club at Medford and clubs at The Dalles and La Grande are expected to enter golfers in the Alderwood Invita tional team match here in June. 38 to 21. Barritt of Talent was high scorer with 20 points Butte Falls downed Phoenix 28 to 19 Friday night in a consol ation game here. It was the only fracas of the day and earned Butte Falls the right to oppose Talent in the Saturday night con solation finals.- Phoenix beat Rogue River and Talent tripped Jacksonville Thursday. Talent drew a Friday bye. St. Mary's gained the cham pionship finals by beating Butte Falls on Thursday night. Gold Hill topped Jacksonville Wed nesday and, was idle until Satur day. Willie Hoppe Takes Win In World Billiard Play San Francisco (U.R) The in comparable Willie Hoppe won his second straight victory in defense of his world three cushion billiard championship Saturday as he turned back Irv ing Crane, Binghamton, N. Y.: 50-33, in 44 innings The victory tied Hoppe with Joe Procita, Los Angeles, for the tournament leadership, each with two wins and no losses, Procita won his second - match Saturday, thumping Herb Hardt, Chicago, 50-31. The . match between Hoppe and Crane was the best of the tournament thus far and for 22 innings it was nip-and-tuck, with Hoppe holding a 25-24 lead at that time. However, after Crane threw a safety at him in the 23rd, Hoppe ran up six points and his lead never was threat ened again. CJ.PJ A 15-year-old freshman who pleaded with officials to let his high school boxing match continue Friday night died a short time later in the dressing room, Whit man County Coroner Lawrence Hickman reported Saturday. Jack Engelman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Engelman, fainted in the dressing room after the bout was stopped in tha . second round in the high school gym benefit matches. He revived briefly then fell dead. San Francisco Seals Purchase Shortstop San Francisco (U.R) Owner Paul I. Fagan, who recently is sued an official statement de claring his San Francisco Seals were "set" for the 1952 Pacific Coast league season, Saturday announced the purchase of Shortstop Jarrett (Jack) Baumer from Memphis. Fagan said the new Seal, a stringbean who hit ,289 last season, was bought for an un disclosed sum, plus Dick Briskey. Briskey, until today earmarked to patrol shortstop for the Seals this year, had failed previously in two attempts to make the San Francisco squad.
