TTlf MEDfORD (OHZGOH) MAIL TEIBUXE ROGUE RIVER, BONANZA OPEN PLAY-OFF TONIGHT The Rogue River Chieftains, Jackson County B league cham pions, open their battle for dis trict laurels tonight against the Bonanza Antlers at Henley. The Chieftains will be shooting for their fifth state tournament berth since 1945. The first games of a best two out of three series will be played Seven Clubs Will Vie in A-2 District ' Seven high schools in District No. 6 A-2 will field baseball teams this spring, it was an nounced following the JDJ league and district meeting this week at Myrtle Creek. The JDJ teams, Myrtle Creek, Sutherlin, Crater, Eagle Point and Illinois Valley, will play their regular schedues. In addi tion Myrtle Creek and Sutherlin will schedule frays with Co quille in the northern half of the district and Eagle Point, Crater and Illinois Valley will play Ashland in the south. If JDJ teams win in both dis trict divisions, the district title will be decided by standings in the loop and no play-off will be needed. Otherwise, a north-south play-off will be required to de termine who meets the A-2 champ in the district. The site will be determined by coin flip. Crater reportedly already has a 14-game schedule and will meet Medford on April 4. Hunt, Johnston North Division All-Star Choices Los Angeles U.R) Two players from Washington's champion Huskies and one each from Oregon State, Idaho and Oregon were named Wednesday to the coaches' all-Northern di vision basketball team. Frank Guisness and Bab Hou bregs of Washington and Danny Johnston of Oregon State were unanimous choices, the PCC com missioner's office announced. Oners on the first five were Hartley Kruger of Idaho and Ken Hunt of Oregon. Named to the second team were Bob Peterson and Chet Noe of Oregon, Eric Roberts of Washington State, Joe Cipriano of Washington, and Bruce Mcin tosh and Herb Millard of Idaho. The latter two tied for a guard position. Honorable mention went to Ken Wegner of Oregon, Mike McCutchen, Duane Enochs and Doug McClary of Washington, and Pete Mullins of Washington State. Jim Dykes Picks Tribe West Palm Beach, Fla. tU.R) Jimmy Dykes Wednesday picked the Cleveland Indians as the club most likely to win the 1952 American league pennant. "They should do it on their pitching," he predicted, "plus the fact that fellows like shortstop Ray Boone and third baseman Al Rosen are going to get bet ter." Yanks Not Out But, he warned, "don't count the Yankees out." On pitching, he figured, the Indians shade the Yankees "and I hear they have another great one c ming up in Sam Jones. Bonanza nabbed a co-championship of the Klamath County B loop and won the subdistrict (title in a three-day tournament last week. . . All-Stars To Start Rogue River Coach Myndret Busack is expected to start a lineup of Jim Wehren and By ron Kile, forwards; Jim Boulter; center, and Ralph Milton and Don Lehrmann,. guards, against the Antlers. " Wehren, Boulter and Milion were named to the Jackson County B league all star team and Boulter this week was named to an all-state B team by Oregon Sports maga zine. In addition, Boulter was also the league's top scorer this season for the second consecu tive year. Bonanza will also list three county all-stars in its starting lineup. All are veterans ol the team which lost two straight games to the 1951 state cham pion Phoenix Pirates in the dis trict playoffs last year. IUX Pilots Win Stare NAIB Tournament Portland U.B : The Univer sity of Portland Pilots turned their eyes toward Kansas City Wednesday after drubbing Wil lamette J00 to 77 here Tuesday night to win the Oregon district tournament in National Associa tion of -Intercollegiate Basket ball play. The Pilots will travel to Kansas City for the NAIB tour nament to be held March 10-15, featuring some of the best small college hoop talent in the country. Record Set The 100 points the Pilots rolled up over their opponents set a new one-game scoring rec ord for the Portland school. The old mark of 96 points was set in a game during the 1949-1950 season with Seattle university. M. H. McGilvery led the way with . 24 points while teammate Jim Winters tossed in 18 to aid the record-breaking Portland vic tory. : Ted Loder topped the Bearcat point-makers with 21. In the. consolation bracket, Lewis and Clark took third place in the four-team tournament by defeating 'Oregon College of Ed ucation 86 to 61. . Medford High ported to a baseball meeting on Monday. The season will open on April 1 when Yreka, Calif., will play a single game here. McDonald has lined up 14 games for Medford. Four more may be scheduled. There will be only four district frays, two each with' Medford and Grants Pass. Two non-district tussles may be arranged with Grants Pass. Medford will face the Univer sity of Oregon junior varsity on April 25 and,play a double bill at Myrtle Creek on April 26 on the return trip from Eugene. There's good chance of a game with the 'Oregon. State college jayvees on May 9. The Tornado will vie at Roseburg on May 10. Legion Orders Dean Scoreboard Commander Hugh Williams reported today that the Medford American Legion post has placed its order for the A. Z. (Tubby; Dean Memorial Scoreboard for the senior high football stadium. He stated that the American Legion drive to sell 1,800 shares at $1 each is well under way and that the campaign has met great response. Merchants par ticularly have been contacted in the campaign. They in turn have been asked to get the shares out to 1,800 of Dean's friends. The electric scoreboard, long needed at the stadium, is a large Instant-Vue model made by Naden and Sons, Webster City, la. It is hoped to have it installed by the first home game next fall. . The scoreboard shares will be good for admission to a basket ball game matching the. seniors of Medford high against next year's squad. Date is Wednes day, March 26. Other Starters Bill Boye and Punky Monroe probably will get opening bids in Warren's plans to get as much backboard strength as possible against the taller Pelican team. Other likely starters are Gordon Carrigan and Larry Bigham. Crater slumped badly at the Jacksonians Grade Loop Champions Undefeated Jackson was as sured the Medford grade school league varsity basketball crown yesterday when Washington de feated Roosevelt 21 to 20. It was Roosevelt's second loss and threw away that team's op portunity to gain a co-championship with Jackson when the two teams meet tonight. Roosevelt led yesterday at the period intermissions 4 to 3, 12 to 10 and 18 to 15. Lincoln downed St. Mary's 18 to 15 in a junior varsity fray yesterday. Cecil Bailey paced the winners with eight points. Half time count was 10 to 5 for Lincoln. SOFTBALL MEET SET Eugene (U.R) The Oregon State . Softball - association will hold its annual meeting in Port land Sunday, Director Don Janu ary of Eugene said Wednesday. Election of officers and consider ation of a site for the 1952 tour nament will be the main topics at the sessions in the Multnomah hotel. Griffin Creek against Oak Grove at 7:30 p. m. and Elk-Trail against West Side at 8:30 p. m. Semi-finals are ' Friday and finals on Saturday. The tourney is single elimination for the championship but with consola tion brackets for third and fourth places. The Medford school system is sponsor. Th will be a small admission cfiarge. Any net pro ceeds will be divided among the participating teams. Trophies will be awarded for the first four places. Boys who officiated at Med ford grade school loop games will be referees for the tourna ment here. Prospect Takes 1st Loop Victory prospect The Frospect.Cou- gars won their first Jackson County B league basketball game of the season here last night as they dumped the win- less Butte Falls Loggers, 48 to 34. Great Dismal Swamp Still Stands on Eastern Coast Washington (U.R) An area of unbroken wilderness stands today in the middle of the crowd ed eastern seaboard much the same as when this country was first founded. '". The. Great Dismal Swamp stretches over - half a ' million acres of watery jungle' in Vir ginia and North Carolina.-Botan ists and foresters describe-its heart, half the size of Delaware, as the finest outdoor laboratory of its kind on the continent. , -, A "relict area" which holds an undisturbed community of plants and animals, the Great Dismal is populated by raccoons, otters, snakes, bears,' wild ducks and deer. It has a permanent human population of one family.. H:.: Above Swamp Level ' Deep in the heart of the swamp is Lake Drummonl. three miles long and nearly as wide, the Na tional Geographic Society says. Its surface is as much as 10 feet above the general level of the swamp. , 1 -v, Canals and ditches cut by lum ber companies after the gums, cypress, maple, and cedar trees of the swamp still offer the only access to the heart of the swamp. Cutting across part of the swamp is the Dismal Swamp Ca nal, a 22-mile-long link in the inter coastal waterway. It con nects Hampton Roads, Va., with the Pasquotank River and Albe marle Sound in North Carolina. The house of a government-employed lock tender on the canal is the: only permanent human habitation in the swamp. The Dismal has shrunk only about one-third in the last 300 years and most of this has been due to fire which burns the peat of the forest floor in dry years.
