Torrid contention between
two fired up aggregations is ex
pected today and Saturday when
Medford and Grants Pass high
school basketball clubs tangle in
the final regular series of the
Southern Oregon conference
Big Four season.
Medford will be gunning to
sew up the conference mantle
while Grants Pass, out of he
running, nevertheless will be
hot after a couple of triumphs
that could add brilliant luster to
an otherwise dismal league sea
son. The games are here today
and at Grants Pass Saturday at
8:15 pan. both days.
To Go All-Out
Reports from Grants Pass say
that the Cavemen .have been
battling the flu bug. Just how
seriously illness will . affect the
Cavemen won't be known until
they appear on the Medford
mapI"court tonight. It can't be
too bad. Coach Ray Davis 01
Grants Pass gang has flatly pre
dicted that his boys will go all
out to win at least one game and
perhaps two from the Black
Tornado.
For Medford a series sweep is
a must If the Black Tornado
wraps up the title; it will have
to be entirely its own doing. It
can't count on help from any
other source. Klamath Falls,
one-game behind conference
leading Medford, is a lopsided
favorite to thunder over cellar
ite Ashland.
Dual Win Important
Medford, therefore, must beat
Grants Pass twice to preserve
the one-game advantage that
will mean the toga. A split with
the Cavemen would mean a
Medford-Klamath title deadlock
and a play-off to decide who
meets Crater for the District No.
4 state tourney berth. Two Med
ford setbacks this week would
give the Big Four division
laurels to Klamath.
Of course , Ashland' may
change the picture by upsetting
Scoreboard Project
Campaign Outlined
Committee Chairman Bud
Fisher has announced additional
plans in the American Legion's
project to provide the Medford
high football stadium with an
electrically operated scoreboard
as a memorial to the late A. Z.
(Tubby) Dean.
The plan is to sell shares in
the memorial at $1 each, Fisher
said. Goal of the shares cam
paign is now 1,800.
Letters have gone out to mer
chants of Jackson county. Fish
er reported, asking them to
Klamath. It's something Med-
fordites can hope for, but such
an occurrence is highly unlikely.
Instead the Tornado will have to
work at ; attaining the fevered
pitch that wrested victory from
Klamath last week-end.
Grants Pas Taller
Medford Mentor Frank-Roe-landt
probably will start Don
Spinas, Ed Bingham, Derald
Wooton and Dennis Conner with
the man for the fifth spot to be
picked from .Jack Boardman,
Dick Atterbury "and Roland
Thompson. Jack Boardman, who
has been a . big boost to the Tor
nado in recent games, will, get
the call if height is thought
needed. Grants Pass has a height
advantage on Medford. ,
The Medfordites were in
healthy condition for the week
end, according to a report this
morning.
Bruce Robertson, John Har
bour and the scoring sensation.
Dick James, are figured as sure
Grants Pass starters. Norm
Hedgepeth and Larry Schwein
furt or Mel Norrick are leading
candidates for the other two
positions.

take blocks of shares and make
them available to their custo
mers. The Legion, the 40 et 8
and the . DeMolay plan stunts
near the various places of busi
ness to aid the sale of the
shares.
Seek 1.800 Shareholders
It is hoped to have 1,800 peo
ple each owning one share. Mer
chants are now being contacted.
It is hoped to have a -speedy
drive in order that the board can
be ordered immediately Fisher
said.
Each share will be good for
one admission at a basketball
game and show at the senior
high gym on Wednesday, March
26. Seniors and next year's Med
ford" high quint will participate
There will be a comedy game
between the East and West Side
merchants of Medford. All mer
chants participating in the pro
ject will be on the team auto
matically. MAGLIE TO HURL
Phoenix (U.R) Sal Maglie,
the New York Giants' 23-game
winner who reported to . camp
only last Tuesday, will pitch
against batters for the first time
in an intra-squad game on Sun
day. Maglie was one of six front
line pitchers-named for the as
signment by manager Leo Du
rocher. The others are Larry
Jansen, Dave Koslo, Max Lanier,
Sheldon Jones and Jim Hearn.
