TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE grants Pass Hopes To lurk Tornado Title Aims h lnJeek-End Hoop Series Coach Ray Davis and his J. A --0 ball squad have ambitions of throwing the Southern Oregon conference Big Four race "into a turmoil." That is a press report from the climate, city. There's not much turmoil that can be caused this late in the campaign but it could be enough to wreck the state tourney hopes of Medford high hoopmen, who are now leading the circuit. . Medford and Grants Pass clash Friday at Medford and Saturday at Grants Pass in tussles , that wind-up the regular league slate for both quints. Varsity frays each day are set for 8:15 p.m. following 6:45 ptm. prelims. Pels, Grizzlies Vie , In another two-game series this week-end Ashland plays at Klamath Falls. The Klamathites, second in the loop, are almost certain to take both tangles from the cellar -dwelling Grizzlies. That means that Medford can't count on any help from Ashland and must win both frays from Grants Pass to gain the pennant. A Tornado sweep over the Cave men would give Medford the crown by a one-game - margin over Klamath. Now Grants Pass is out of the running 1 MEDFORDvltijTRIBUNB Prep Grappling Tournament Opens Friday Corvallis The state's out-i standing prep wrestlers will( flock to the Oregon State col lege campus this weekend for the fifth annual Oregon high school mat ' championships. The tournament will get un derway Friday afternoon, with quarter-finals slated that night. Semi-final matches will be stag ed Saturday afternoon, with battles for third and fourth place, plus the championship pairings, scheduled for the final night. Scene of the tourney is the men's gym. , Four district qualifying tour naments were held last week end, sifting four men in each weight division' from each dist rict for the state championships. Last year 192 men representing 24 schools competed here and a similar number is expected next weekend. Pels Favored ' In the four years the tourney has been held at Oregon State, Klamath Falls has walked off with the title each time and will be heavily favored again ' this year. That was a defeat by Med ford that enabled Klamath Falls to take the honors by a single game margin. It is that occurrence of last year that makes Grants Pass de sirous of victory. Medford will be favored when it collides with the Cavemen this week-end. But the Tornado can at Corvallis over the Oregon State junior varsity and - traditionally dom inate the prep ranks. Jim Dixon, OSC varsity wrestling coach, is director of the meet which is sponsored by the athletic department Of OSC, in conjunction with the Oregon School Activities association. . Six Medford youths will vie in the state wrestling tourney at Corvallis this week-end. They are Dave Newland, 141-pound class; Norm Hanscom, 148; Don Jacobs, heavyweight; Jim Mc Daniel, 130; Bud Thames, 157; and Dennis Faulkner, 168. They will be taken to the tournament by Coach Fred Spiegelberg. " Button Leading Skating Rivalry Paris (U.R) Dick Button of Englewood, N. J., got off to a flying start in the men's world figure skating championship Thursday by outclassing his rivals in the compulsory school figures. . . . Button, who has held "the world title for the-last four years, wound up with an un official total of 779.8 points at the end of first day's competi tion, and will go into Friday's concluding free skating event with a 35-point lead. - Helmut Seibt of Austria was in second place at the conclu sion of the school figures with 744.8 points. Starters Listed Possible Grants Pass starters Friday are Norm Hedgpeth and John Harbour, forwards; Mel Norrickr center; and Dick James and . Bruce Robertson, guards. Larry Schweinfurt may see con siderable action. Because Grants Pass will have a height advantage Coach Frank Roelandt undoubtedly will de termine his starters by the Cave men's opening five. Ed Bingham at forward, Derald Wooton at center, Dennis Conner at guard, and Don Spinas at either for ward or guard appear definite starters. The fifth man will be picked from tall Jack Boardman, Dick Atterbury and Roland Thomp son. If Boardman starts, he will be at a forward and Spinas at .a guard. Otherwise, Spinas will be a forward spot. ' Five Berths For Tourney To Be Filled . New York (U.R) The Nation al Invitation basketball tourna ment was expected to f;ll most, if not all, of its remaining five berths Thursday. Asa Bushnell, chairman of the NIT committee, promised that his group would announce the complete 12-team field "by Thursday." But there was a good chance that the commit tee would hold at least one place open until it sees how New York university fares against St. John's Thursday night. ACE Sport' Controlling Program Apparently Doomed to Failure New York U.R) The Ameri can Council on Education's pro gram for controlling intercolle giate athletics appeared doomed to failure Thursday as two east ern college accrediting agencies announced they could not en force it. Officials of the Middle Atlan tic states and New England, states college and secondary school as sociations said they could not enforce the ACE code because it is "impractical" and beyond their function. A committee of college presi dents appointed by the ACE drew up a 10-point program for cracking down on intercollegiate athletics last January 8 and had hoped the six powerful accredit ing agencies throughout the na tion would enforce it by refusing to accredit schools which vio late the code. The ACE code included ban Seattle Not Seriously Considered for Tourney Seattle (U.R) A member of the NCAA executive committee has informed Seattle university officials that the Chieftains are not being "seriously considered" for a western basketball tourna ment berth at Corvallis, Bill Fen ton, Seattle athletic director, said Thursday. Reeves Peters, the committee member, told Fen ton in' a tele phone conversation from Kansas City that five teams are in line for the members-at-large bid. They are Drake, Oklahoma City, St. Mary's, San Francisco, and Santa Clara.
