Uimtfnal) Lovely Logging In taking bearings on all views of" the country's timber resource views of yesterday, today and tomorrow in the woods two things are steadfast. The stump we shall always have with us. And the logger, the man behind the stump, is here to stay. The logger swung an ax of stone in the time cf Ug and Ag, In our time he" is a power saw operator in a metal safety hat, and tomorrow, very likely, he will raise his hand and drop bis tree with 'the flick of an atomic ax. "Great days in the timber," say the old-time pinetops and fir-whackers. They tell that the fact of great change in the woods first hit them betwen the eyes away back when they learned that the pretty dresses they saw on girls in the timber towns were often made from products of the West Coast hemlock log. It was a piece of information no logger was apt to forget when he went to work on a hemlock tree, back in the 1920s. ' Then the wood pulp industry was expanding nationally from (rowing paper demand and from new pulp products and for pulp making the hemlock was prime. So the sons of Paul Bunyan were cutting and yarding logs from-, which yarn as fine as silk would be spun, to make pretty clothes for, the girls. This was what work in the woods had come to. Holy old mackinaw! No Wood for Fuel Every development of the 'kind represented increased util ization of the available wood on a given acre of forest land. It meant more work and earnings for the logger, bigger returns for the land owner, stronger rea sons for applied forestry, more money to pay for it, less logging leftovers to become fire haz ards, cleaner ground for na ture's reseeding and more stumps! New surprises have kept com ing along for the old-time log gers. Soon after the last war a new logging camp really, a new town, with family homes, school, church was opened far back in a Douglas fir area. - All heating and cooking stoves in camp were equipped to use fuel oiL Any log in the area that was sound enough for use as fuel was too valuable to burn in camp. So fuel oil was hauled up 30 miles to the camp and every piece of sound wood was hauled down to the mills, for conversion into forest prod ucts. ' Down South The Southern forest region, with 183 million acres of com mercial forest land, was amaz ingly and wonderfully reinvigor ated in the 1920s by the tide of new demand for paper and new methods of making newsprint pulp from slash pine. The new forest industry of the South has grown steadily ever since, while Southern lumber production has held up to about 40 per cent of the American total. Scientific forest fire control has made mighty headway against the old farm tradition of burn to bring on the grass, a tradition of death to tree seed- yings. Presi dent Nadine Broad opened the meeting after which we gave the 411 pledge. .Wilma Young was elected secretary to take the place of a member who resigned. Our leader. Mrs. Foley, gave an assignment for the next meet ing which will be at the home of Wilma Young on March 1. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Barnes. Nancy Barnes, Reporter. All other things being equal. the Japanese would be Inclined to pick the Nationalists over the Communists because the Japan ese are strongly anti-CommunisI At the same time, however, the Japanese are practical people sr.d many are influenced by the argument that Japan needs to trade with the Communist-con-Untied msintsnd of China. Some of the pro-Nationalist forces m Japan argue that Japan dors not need to trade with Com munist China. They say Japan ran find plenty of markets and raw materials elsewhere. Other pro-Nstionalists say that recoenitien of Communist China will be no guarantee that a large and profitable trade will arise between the two nations. Some of those favoring recog nition of the Pelping govern ment argue that Japan must do business with Its large neighbor to survive In the present world economic competition. -Yothide A ail-Red Since they do not have to make a decision immediately, Japanese government officials are saying very little on the sub ject. There can be little doubt, however, as to how Premier Shi geru Yoshida feels. He is the head of the present conservative government and has no use for Communism. Addressing the delegates at the San Francisco peace confer ence, Yoshida said: "As regards to China, I con fine myself to two points: The first point is that like others we regret that disunity prevents China from being here. "The second is that the role of China's trade in Japanese economy, important as it is, has often been exaggerated,: as provenjay our experience of the past six years." For ( the present, Japan has cast its lot with the western de mocracies, v particularly the United States.
