SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday. February IM Director of Mental Health Association Plans Visit Here Melvin Murphy, director of the Mental Health Association of Oregon, will be in Medford Wednesday, March 5, for a series of meetings on mental health topics, it was announced today. Sponsoring Murphy's visit here are the Jackson County Public Health association, the County Council of Parent Teacher - associations and " the Jackson County Council on Chil dren and Youth. The first meeting is scheduled for 10:30: a. m. at the Medford YMCA, when a recent mental health film will be shown with later discussion led by Murphy. Noon Luncheon . A noon luncheon at the "Y" will include a discussion of mental health organization in Jackson county, and in the eve ning Murphy will, address an open meeting of the Medford City Council of PTA. During the afternoon, he will conduct a closed workshop meet ing on truancy problems for in vited educators and law enforce ment personnel. 0 Parents, leaders of youth and children's groups and teachers are invited to attend each of the three scheduled meetings or any one of them, the committee in charge said. Spot Check Being Made on Personal Property Taxes A spot check of personal property tax returns is being made here this week. An official from the assessment and taxa tion division of the state tax commission is making the check every 10th return in the as sessor's files to stop a high rate of incorrectly made forms., ' County Assessor C.. A. Myers said the results from checks in 10 widely scattered counties showed $1,057,757.03 in total value not reported, with only 45.6 per cent of the returns accurate. The tax commission wrote Myers, "It is self evident that this condition cannot be toler ated. Action is being instigated by the tax commission through publicity and cooperation with county assessors to correct these conditions in time for this year's rolls." Firms, corporations and asso ciations are required by law to make a full listing of taxable personal property, showing 100 per cent of its true cash value, Myers pointed out. Government Relaxes Restrictions on Lead Washington (U.R) The gov ernment Tuesday relaxed re strictions on use of lead. Three days before its effective date, an order was revoked which would have restricted pro duction of storage batteries for automobiles, lights- and light tractors. . , . . . The National Production Au thority said a critical shortage of the metal has eased consider ably within the past two months because of increased imports and better recovery of scrap. The agency said, without elaboration, other restrictions on lead consumption would be re laxed later. The battery indus try accounts for about one-third of U. S. lead usage. OPS Building Rules To Be Discussed Here Ralph Smith, business analyst for the Office of Price Stabiliza tion Portland office will be in Medford March 6 and 7 to con duct a series of meetings on an OPS regulation affecting the construction industry, it was an nounced here today. The meet ings will be held in the Medford hotel. ' On Thursday, March 6, at 8 p. m., Smith will meet with gen eral contractors, brick masons and plasterers. Meetings are scheduled Friday, March 7, at 9 a. m. with water well drillers, and at 2 p. m. with plumbers, electricians and painters. ' - V School Buildings Said Unsatisfactory Salem (U.R) One-tenth of Oregon's public school buildings are unsatisfactory, education au thorities said Tuesday. A survey conducted by the U. S. Department of Education in cooperation with the Oregon State Department of Education showed that 161 public school buildings out of 1,253 are un satisfactory. These 161 schools are attended by 26,059 pupils. Rated as satisfactory are 514 school plants serving 119,337 pupils. The remainder, total 578," are rated as fair. The Oregon survey was part of a national scan provided by the 81st Con gress. . McKay Gives Advice To Woodburn Citizens Salem (U.R) To a com plaint of Woodburn residents that boys from the nearby Mac Claren boys school-state deten tion school were stealing cars in the area. Gov. Douglas Mc Kay made this suggestion today to the Woodburn residents: Lock your cars. The suggestion followed read ing of a resolution from the Woodburn Junior Chamber of Commerce at the board of con trol meeting Tuesday asking that the board investigate escapes from the MacLaren school and car. robberies and home bur glaries that follow. ' 52 Medford Minors Ordered Off Jobs Salem A. recent check of Medford employer for compli ance with the Oregon wage and hour law revealed that some minors under 18 were being hired illegally. Labor Commis sioner W. E. Kimsey, said today. The labor department ordered 52 minors off their Jobs in Med ford. The employers, Kimsey said, had not secured work per mits for them as required by Oregon child labor law. The commissioner pointed out that before such permits are issued. the labor department investi gates the type of work, wages and hours and general working conditions. Medford theaters and bowling alleys employed 20 of the minors illegally. The mer cantile industry employed 20. Violation of the,; legal . vork week for women and minors was second most .frequent of fense in Medford, the check re vealed, with-15 employers ex ceeding the legal " 8-hour day, 44-hour . week. In' some cases a 12V4 to 16 hour day and a 56 to 66 hour week were reported. Records of wages and hours were not being kept as required by .law by a few employers in the area.
