M y colleague complains that some young men take this seriously and demand . . . and my col league tries to explain in words of one syllable why the physi cian or the hospital cannot per mit the expectant father to share his wife's joy, happiness or what ever betide. One of the doctor's objections to my . teaching is reasonable enough, but it arises from a mis understanding which I deplore. The young men who "demand" .admittance to the delivery room or create a disturbance in the hospital or picket the place do so of their own accord, not by my . advice. Indeed I'd say any one who behaves like that de serves a term in jail. The time to settle the question of presence or absence of the expectant father during the birth of his baby provided of course, his wife wants him to share the miracle with her is when en gaging the physician. If she phy sician recoils at the idea, let him or her go back to the nineteenth century and let the father look up a physician with twentieth century training. Kennedy figures he's seen only two of his pictures in 14 years of toiling off-and city. when somebody a private in 1943. he says. mil i 1 Aline Moaby on in the plaster "Once was ran one as a joke in home projection room I had to sweat it out," my dear (imbecile), the nun might bring infection into the delivery room. No, they advised the husband to go home, it would be hours yet, but they'd call him when the baby arrived. So the poor gullible geek went home. As soon as he was out of the place a whole class of student nurses was led in. and each young student proceeded to ex amine the patient ... a typical example of the doings in deliv ery rooms in 19th century institutions. though he were discussing the matter with some well, with the characteristic gall of a trick specialist, my colleague reminds me that, it always has been the aim of good obstetrics to keep infection out of the delivery room. - In view of what goes on in de livery rooms in some institutions where the nincompoops are con fined in the monkey cage while the doings go on, that is down right funny. In my scrapbook is a clipping of one of my own columns in which I advocated what has since become known as "living in", constant attendance of the expectant father before, during and after delivery, etc. Along side this is another clipping from a newspaper in the middle west an open letter to the editor from the superintendent of a 19th century hospital explaining in droll style that the doctors and nurses in the delivery room are far too busy to stop and take care of fainting husbands.
