Meeds, Navy yeoman, son of Mrs. Mar tha Jane Meeds, JacKsonvuie, now on board the USS Rochester which is on a second tour of duty in Korean waters, has re turned to Japan from the combat zone, according to a Navy re lease. With Infantry Stephen N Childers, an Army corporal, is now serving as a mechanic with the 45th infantry division's artil lery light aviation section, ac cording to an Army release. The division's mechanics service ob servation planes which fly at low altitudes to direct ground fire. Injured Edward Cooper, 1916 North Elm street, was taken to Community hospital early this morning after being struck on the forehead by a piece of lum ber while at work at the White City Lumber company, according to a hospital report. He was hos pitalized and his condition is reported as "very good." - - Hospital Notes Lonzo C. Mc Mahan, 915 Grant street, is con valescing from surgery at Sacred Heart hospital following surgery there, hospital attendants said today. Fierling, an Army lieutenant, his wife and their three children are visiting at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Fiernng, jacuson-ville-Phoenix hichwav. He has been stationed at Ft. Ord. Calif., and is on leave while en route to his new station at Ft Riley, Kan., where he will be about a month to receive special instruc tion for duty in Germany. Mrs. Fierling and the children will remain here while he is at the Kansas base and later they will leave for Germany. Bursting Pipe Seen Cause of Gas Blast Longview, Tex. (U.PJ Offi cials said Monday a bursting pipe in the Skelly Oil company blasting unit may have caused the refinery's huge distilling tow er to explode in a shower of fire Sunday. No definite estimate of dam age had been made, but com pany officials reported it would run into the "thousands of dol lars." No one was injured. Flames climbed several hun dred feet into the air, and re ports of the blaze were received from as far as Gladewatcr, 12 miles to the east. The flow of oil -and gasoline to the tower was cut off by clos ing a master valve, and Long view firemen said the blaze burned itself out by late aft ernoon. Victim of Accident Improved After Surgery Mrs. Rosaria Calabrese, Chica go, 111., bride who suffered mul tiple fractures in an accident February 14 on the Siskiyous, is reported by her attendants as "greatly improved" following surgery Saturday at Sacred Heart hospital. February IS, 19(1 Casting ofKivanis Kapers Nov Hear End, Report Says Casting for the fourth annual Kiwanis Kapers and Minstrel show is 99 per cent complete and production is a week ahead of the 1951 schedule, according to Director Phil Butler of Geller productions, Hollywood. Rehearsals are in full swing. Title of the presentation is "Gee! Washington." There are t to acts arid eight scenes. Med ford and Ashland Kiwanis clubs are staging the show on March S. 6. 7 and 8 for the benefit of Medford underprivileged, chil dren s work and Ashland youth activities. Butler said that one of the feature scenes will be the "Dandy Candidates." featuring Jack Peters as Senator Blow hard and George Rode as Sena tor Gotrocks. They are the prin cipal candidates as the auditor ium Is turned into a "Republo crats" convention hall. Another scene high on the Washincton monument features Mis Duane Maddox and Glen Crocker as sightseers. Mrs. Jack McCoy has substituted for her. rhi '.Ay Political Creed' taken MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN Big Y Market Here Named Finalist In Retail Contest The Big Y market of Medford has been named a finalist in the fourth annual "Brand Name Re tailer of the Year" contest, it was announced today in New York. Henry E. Abt, president of Brand Names Foundation, Inc., said the Big Y is one of 20 fi nalists in the food retailer com petition from throughout the United States. The national winner will be selected and awarded top honors at a dinner in New York on April 16, Abt said. He added that more than 6,000 entries from stores in the 20 different categories have been competing for the awards and there are 345 finalists,' representing 240 cities in 43 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and Ha waii. Yreka Man Fined $100 For Reckless Driving Pete Wall, general delivery, Yreka, Calif., was fined $100 in police court this morning on a charge of reckless driving, ac cording to city police. Wall was the driver of a car which col lided with a vehicle operated by Martin Heitkamp, route 3, box 385C, at the intersection of Stew art avenue and Highway 99 south at about 1 a. m. Sunday, police sttaed. No injuries resulted from the accident, police said. Damage to the cars was not reported. Steve R. Hess, 1955 Sunset drive, told police that his car was damaged in a hit and run accident at 1132 North Riverside avenue at about 1:45 a. m. Sun day. Amount of the damage was not reported.
