Ashland Medford Klamath Falls pulled even with Medford Friday night in the Southern Oregon conference Big Four basketball race and the Pelicans' giant Ralph Carroll was largely responsible. Klamath downed the Black Tornado here 54 to 42 for its seventh win against two losses .and for a first-place deadlock Medford has the same record in league contention. Medford fought hard and hustled all the way but Carroll's six-feet seven inches and the height of his teammates, Ray Bell, six-five, and Jack Horton, six-four, proved a bit too much altitude for the scrapping Tor nado. -. Many Rebounds : Carroll was responsible for the bulk of Pelican scoring with 32 points on 14 field goals and four free shots. Twenty-one of his counters came in the first half. The skyscraping center pulled down 17 rebounds in ad dition to plunking in frequent tip-in shots. - , Klamath made the most of its height keeping the pace gener ally slow and deliberate to set up its taller men, principally Carroll, for shots close in. The pace picked up a bit in the sec ond quarter but cooled down again in the next peroid. : The Pelicans were on top all the way. Medford kept close on the Pels' heels in the early mo ments. Klamath sprinted from an 11 to 10 edge midway in the first quarter to a 20 to 11 spread. The Tornado cut the margin to 20 to 17 by the end of the stanza. Gain Good Laad ! In the second quarter Klamath worked to a 32 to 21 margin and led by 34 to 17 at halftime. The Pels held never less than a seven point advantage in the third quarter and the spread was gen erally nine or 10 points. Third period intermission standing was 45 to 36. Medford threatend the Peli cans in the fourth period with field goals by Derald Wooton and Ed Bingham, while Cal Gil more of Klamath was getting a free heave, slicing the gap to 48 to 40. Carroll's tip-in made it 48 to 40. They dropped in only 34 per cent of their attempts from the field. Conner's Goals Thrill Dennis Conner headed Med ford in point-making with 15 of which 12 were in the first half. He thrilled spectators with long heaves for tallies at the buzzer blasts ending the first quarter and the half. Don Spi nas almost duplicated the feat at the end of the third period. The Eagles shoved Crater out of possible JDJ co-championship. Myrtle Creek defeated Illinois Valley 71 to 45 at Cave Junction last night to cop the pennant. Crater supporters felt the Comets, who missed many shots, were far off their game. But Coach Jerry Mosby felt his Eagle crew had a well-earned triumph with a strategy aimed at putting the pressure on the Comets and keeping them off balance. Long Stall The initial bit of strategy em ployed by the Eagles and aimed at keeping Crater from getting a big jump was to stall the first seven minutes of the game. The ninth graders earned re venge by tipping the Crater high freshmen 42 to 39. Medford won the eighth grade fray 28 to 22 and the seventh grade affair 28 to 20. Medford s Ninth cloned its sea son with the mix. Seventh graders will face the Phoenix grade school vsrsity and junior varsity here on Monday night while the eighth grade winds up by playing St Mary's on Tues day. Parent High The Bulldog ninth led at the intermissions of its hassle by 9 to 7. 23 to 13 and 33 to 30. Frank Rector topped Medford scoring with 12 while Parent of Central Point was high for the game with 14. In the eighth grade ruckus Medford held quarter margins of 4 to 3, 17 to 10 and 24 to 13. Lloyd Cearley paced Medford with 10 counters. The Medford seventh won its ninth straight fracas Friday with period advantages of 6 to S, 11 to 8 and 23 to 16. Its record now is 10 wins and one loss.
