McFarland. Low-Cos! Housing Tried in Seattle And Reportedly Works Out All Right Seattle (U.R) A $4,999 home is a Seattle builders bid to caputre the low-cost housing market here. According to officers of Budg et Homes, Inc., the four-room, expandable homes being built at Mountlake Terrace 13 miles north of here is the most prof itable venture they've ever un dertaken. To meet the demand for a cheap but durable home, the Seattle firm has "thrown away the book," says Vice-President A. LaPierre. Not that the com pany's mass-produced methods are particularly unique. They have been used by builders on Long Island, N. Y., and in Los Angeles. But LaPierre claims that no other company has yet put up a home to sell for $4, 000 to equal his firm's. "We had been building houses in the $8,750 to $0,950 range since before 1940," LaPierre ' said. "But in late 1948 and early 1949 we made a comprehensive cot analysis of home building to see if we couldn't build a house aimed at the some 70 per cent of prospective home buyers we and everyone else were by-passing." It was accomplished by buy ing cheap land 13 miles north of the city, buying materials in carload lots direct from the fac tory, no sub-contracting except for plumbing, painting, floors and electrical wiring, and by deleting many of the costly frills in homebuilding. One of the features of the "Dura-Home," as it's known, which LaPierre emphasizes Is its expansion qualities. He said: "The majority of our buyers are World War II veterans in their middle twenties and early thirties. Most are recently mar ried. With an eye on the na tion's rising birth rate we fig ured that a young couple would need an inexpensive home to start with but as more children were born, would want to ex pand their first home rather than move to a larger place." By next month 205 homes will have been built on the 51-acre mm 1 1 WEDNESDAY ITOtl HOUM IYT1T Wednesday Mountlake Terrace. There alfo will be a 30-store shopping cen ter, plus a grade school. The homes built on lots averaging 65 by 110 feet are constructed of building blocks and have no basements. Twelve different models, designed by an archi tect, are offered and a buyer has at least 20 units to choose from. Budget Homes, Inc., also has a well-developed incentive pro gram to induce new buyer' to do their own landscaping. A to tal of $4,100 in cash prizes will be offered this year for the best landscaping jobs. Other methods used by the firm to help the buyers improve their grounds include buying peatmoss in carload lots and sell ing it cutrate and throwing in a flowering plum tree if the home owner buys a driveway culvert from the firm. Continued Spraying Of Cherries Advised Salem, Ore., July 5 U.R) Marion County Agent D. L. Ras mussen cautioned cherry grow ers today to keep spray or dust on their trees as he reported the largest cherry fruit fly emer gence of the 1950 season. Rasmussen found 24 fruit flies under the two emergence cages in the Lamberta orchard east of Salem Friday. Rasmussen said the interval between sprays or dusts should not exceed 14 days. 117 S. Weishaar, chief of the bureau of market enforcement of the California state depart ment of agriculture, today re minded farm products and live stock growers and handlers of licensing requirements for move ment of goods into California. Representatives of the Califor nia bureau have been assigned to work with Oregon law en forcement agencies in review ing the past operations of ques tionable handlers, and to con sult as to practices designed to bring about compliance with regulations in both states, he said. He added that through licens ing and bonding, illicit opera tions are being held down, and that through information fur nished by licensees, bad prac tices are being discouraged such as dealing with improper or fictitious bills of sale, post dated checks, drafts or non-ex-istant companies, transportation of stock without proper health clearance or bill of sale, and others. Weishaar said that informa tion can be obtained on regular operators and handlers of any farm produce in California by asking the bureau of market en forcement, Mull building, Sacra mento, where a file is kept on all such persons, and a cumula tive record of complaints is maintained. If a dealer is in good standing, he is furnished with a blue identification card, the bureau chief said.
