(Artcraft itudlo, Granti Pan) Sold Hill Girl Wed To Richard Abbott In Church Ceremony Gold Hill An event of Satur day afternoon, June 24, was the wedding in Newman Methodist church in Grants Pass of Miss Joanna Joy Cogswell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Cogs well, to Richard Wilson Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs Howard Ab bott of Grants Pass. The double ring ceremony was read by the Rev. Orville L. Covault of Oak grove, Ore., uncle of the bride groom. The chancel was decorated with baskets of gladioli and can delabra with white candles were on either side of the altar. Mrs. John Schieferstein, organist, ac companied Mrs. C. Norman Gail who sang. About 200 guests at tended the wedding. The bride, given in marriage by her father, had chosen a wed ding dress of white marquisette with sweetheart neckline trim med in imported chantilly lace. The full skirt had panels of lace and train edged with ruffle. Her fingertip veil of illusion fell from a halo of sheer net and she car ried a white Bible with a white orchid and stcphanotis. She wore a string of pearls which was a gift from the bridegroom. Miss Jane Abbott, sister of the bridegroom, was maid of hon or. Her gown was while shadow organdy over blue. She wore a halo of trimmed lace and car ried an old-fashioned nosegay of pink roses and carnations. Miss Joanne Centers and Miss Carina Ferguson of Gold Hill and Miss Dixie Bebb of Grants Pass were the bridesmaids. Their gowns of white organdy over orchid, green and yellow, were worn with halos of lace and they carried nosegays of Esther Reed daisies and carnations in colors to match their gowns. The small flower girl was Kalherine Kudlac of Grants Pass and she wore a white shadow or gandy gown over pink and car ried a basket of pink rose petals which were strewn in the path of the bride. Master Bruce Co vault, cousin of the bridegroom, acted as ring bearer. John Abbott, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. The ushers were Charles Bridges, Calvin Fry and Grover Mull Jr., all of Grants Pass. A reception was held in the church parlor with more than 100 guests attending. The re freshment table was decorated with white candles, Esther Reed daisies and lavender and white mountain lilies. Mrs. Don Hodge of Grants Pass and Mrs. Emll T. DIVecchio of Medford cut and served the cake. Mrs. Harry Newnham presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. Roy Centers had charge of the wedding gifts. For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Cogswell wore a dress of navy blue sheer with pearl gray accessories and corsage of pink rosebuds. The bridegroom's mother wore a light blue lace dress with white accessories and her corsage was pink rosebuds. The couple traveled to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe in California and upon returning to Grants Pass they will be at home at 411 East D street. Voting was heavy in favor of hearing more contemporary music on the net works, and the New York Philharmonic-Symphony was named as the program which has most consistently favored this type of music. The Berkshire Festival entered the lists as the choice of the critics for the best summer music. For the first time in seven polls, the NBC Symphony took first place as the outstanding symphony orchestra. Arturo Tos canini has always swept the boards as outstanding symphony conductor, and his ensemble joins him this year in the blue ribbon class. Two individuals won first place for the first time, Blanche Thebom as woman sing er and Jussi Bjoerling, as man singer, The Railroad Hour, a new comer in the voting, topped all other operatic programs. Awards were as follows; Spec ial award, National Broadcasting company for serving most faith fully the cause of serious music during the year (fourth time); outstanding event of the year, Verdi's "Falstaff." by Arturo Toscanini; outstanding Metro politan opera broadcast, three way tie between Strauss' "Rosenkavalier," Moussorgsky's "Khovanchina" and Mozart's "Le Nosse di Figaro." Two winners remain as favor ites over the seven years of the poll, Arturo Toscanini and the Telephone Hour with Donald Voorhecs as conductor. The emergence of Miss Thebom as woman singer upset a favorite of six years, Marian Anderson. The critics found television still in too experimental a stage to judge as a musical medium. The voters asked the networks to give them more music in this order; symphonic, opera, cham ber music and solo recitals. They had by far more bouquets than brickbats for the broad casters, the magazine reports, seeming to feel gratitude for any scraps of good music that came their way through the medium of radio. Most of the complaints had to do with announcers and commercials, rather than with musical quality. By Rogue River Couple Rogue River Amidst many friends and relatives who gath ered to congratulate them on their golden wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Beck repeated their marriage vows at a reception held in their home Saturday, June 24, in the Rogue River high school auditorium. The anniversary ceremony wat performed by the Rev. Marion Sumpter, minister of the Church of God, the church which Mrs. Beck's father, the Rev. Joel Milton, founded and which he served as pastor for many years. ror ine reception Mrs. Been wore a tailored gown of equa marine silk and carried a bouquet of white roses with golden rlbbin streamers. Beside the couple stood the same brides maid and best man who had attended them fifty years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Magerle, sis ter and brother-in-law of M r a. Beck. Guests were received by the Beck's daughters, Mrs. F. G. Hawkins of Grants Pass, Mrs. Raymond Cummings of Rogue River and Mrs. George Scott of Trail. Before the ceremony members of a former high school trio sang which was followed by a solo, "I'll Be Loving You Always." A platform rocker and a read ing lamp, gifts of the community, were presented the Becks. How ever, Mrs. Reed Carter, chair man of the school board said, "We are not going to let him retire to that easy chair; we can't do without him. We need him as maintenance man to act in an advisory capacity." Mr. Beck who has been janitor at the schools since May 28, 1928, is one of the town's most respected and beloved citizens. He is one of the early settlers of Evans creek. His parents. Aaron and Sarah Beck, moved to Maple Gulch in the winter of 1882-3 according to the diary of Samuel Steckel, owner of the first Evans creek sawmill, and a neighbor of the Becks. Mr. Steckel recorded that Aaron Beck began cutting house logs near Maple Gulch on Janu ary 16, 1883 and on January 22 Ben Carter finished snaking Beck's house logs to the building ground. But on January 29, with the weather cloudy and unset tled, when Mr. Beck went to the mill and asked Mr. Steckel to help raise the house on the next day, the latter wrote, "Conclud ed I had better run the mill." While other neighbors helped raise the log walls of the house, Mr. Steckel sawed the lumber to be used to finish the house, before the storm struck. Later there were roses planted around the log house for, on April 14, Mr. Steckel wrote, "Mrs. Beck and the two little boys called and got some rose bushes." "I was one of those little boys," laughed William Beck as he read the old record, "I was born September 25, 1879, before the family moved from Califor nia. I am one of these Califor nians that moved to Oregon making it too crowded," he joked. "Maple Gulch Is where Harold Laws (postmaster) lives now. We lived there in the old log hduse and we played with the Steckel children who lived up the creek, and there was Al bert Whlteman, the Whitemans lived on the Edsal place, now the Clark dairy farm, and Angle Simpkins used to visit with us, and the Magerles lived across the creek. We all went to school at the first school house in Woodville. It was a little board and bat house. Mr. Steckel sawed the lumber to build it and he made the desks. E Phipps was our teacher. Jim Whipple went to school there too." "In 1889 Joel Milton and his family settled on a ranch be tween our place and the Steckel mill," related Beck. "He had a large family." "Olive Milton and I were mar ried on June 24, 1900," contin ued Mr. Beck "and we've lived happily for 50 years.
