FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) 942,000 Deaths Recorded Since Autos First Appeared (Editor's note: fn vtevr or the long Fourth of July week-end approaching, the United Preu has prepared ser le o( three article! on traffic acci dent!. Chicago, June 28 U.R) Kill every person In Des Moines, Nashville, Hichmond, Omaha and Miami and the toll wouldn't equal the number of persons killed in the United States by automobiles since self-propelled vehicles were first tried out. There probably have been more deaths, but recorded fig ures show that 942,000 persons have died in automobile traffic accidents in the past 148 years, most of them since the turn of the century. That's nearly 100, 000 more than the total United States war dead since 1775. March them four abreast in military formation, 120 steps a minute, past a reviewing stand. The parade would last about 13 Vt days. i Rush them through 30-minute funerals. If the services were held 24 hours day, seven days a week, it would take S3 years to get them to their graves. By the time the last one was buried there would be 1,690,000 other bodies, at the current high way rate of exchange of life for death three per hour. Their fu nerals would take 94 years, at the end of which there would be an accumulation ot j.uuu.uuu others, in a never-ending stream. Statisticians figure there are 35 injured for every person kill ed in an automobile accident. The toll of injured at that rate would be 32,970.000. Man lost his first bout with the automobile in 1802, when an Englishman, Richard Trevi- thick. plowed his steam carriage into a fence at 10 mph. Trevi thick escaped death but became the world's first auto accident victim. Trevithick'a crack-up, history ays, inspired a torrent of indig nation against this menace. The torrent has been raging ever since. Politicians, movie stars, la borers, business men, athletes, grandmothers and musicians are united with every segment of American life in fighting the wave of death on the streets and highways; three deaths and 105 -Injured every hour. The wave goes on, but there is evidence that safety campaigns have begun to meet some suc cess. Last year, it was 7.4. That means that of 10,000,000 motorists who drove 10,000 miles in 192S, 19 were killed. If the same 19 could have driven last year, 12 of them, theoretically, would be alive today. But the national safety coun cil, which furnishes the figures, points out that the death rate will be of little comfort to the estimated 32,000 who will be killed this year. Manley Robinson, director of public Information for the high way commission, is in Medford today for an appearance before the Medford Kiwanis club and while he is here the tourist and convention committee of the chamber of commerce will lay their problems and plans before him for advice and comment.
