Second place winner will be awarded $100 in gold; third $50 in gold and fourth, $25 in gold. Brady In which he a screw mad of special metal al had inserted vltalllum (a loy) into th bona in th space where the tooth was missing and then attached the artificial tooth to the peg, I caught hell for my "prema ture" and unwarranted an nouncement of the peg tooth achievement, from dentists in various parti of th country, some of whom ridiculed the very idea of Inserting a metal screw or peg into the jaw bone as a base for an artificial tooth to take the place of a missing tooth without attaching th artificial tooth to a tooth on either side. Although I never apologized or acknowledged I had been wrong, I had to pull In my horns and refrain from much further talk about peg teeth be cause I couldn't find any den tists who were prepared to em ploy the new technique. Den tists, it seems, are even more conservative than physicians in respect to new developments, methods or techniques. Al though the relatively painless and effective ambulant or office of internal hemorrhoids (piles) has been established as the method of choice now for years, there are still many physicians who inflict the atrocious clamp and cautery "operation" on their patients if the luckless victims are aware of the ambulant treat ment and ask about it these old timers assure them that it has been tried and discarded, or that it is dangerous, or that it doesn't cure the trouble. Maybe some of them really know no better, but If so, it is just another indica Hon that there is something rad ically wrong with medicine. A reader sends me a newspa per report of a session of the Connecticut State Dental asso ciation in Hartford May 22, where Dr. Moses S. Strock, oral surgeon,- presented a report of his research work in implanting such metal screws or pegs in the Jaw to support artificial teeth. This can be done In child or adult at the time a tooth Is ex traded or later on. Dr. Strock said a patient can put as much pressure on such a peg tooth as one could on a normal tooth. Erickson Sentenced To Jail Term; Fined New York, June 27 (U.R) Kingpin Bookmaker Frank Erickson was sentenced yester day to a two-year prison term and fined $30,000 for operating a multi-million dollar coast-to- coast bookmaking business. Special Sessions Justice Na than D. Perlman, presiding over a three-man bench, also senten ced the pudgy gambler to one year on each of three bookmak ing counts but suspended that sentence. The $30,000 fine was the max imum possible under the crimi nal information to which Erick son pleaded guilty last Monday. The information listed 59 count of bookmaking and one count of conspiracy to violate the gambl ing laws. , Savage Creek Mill Destroyed by fire Rogue River, June 27 The Savage Creek sawmill was de stroyed early yesterday after noon by fire of unknown origin. Rogue River rural firemen were called and used the new portable fire equipment, pump ing water from the mill pond. The roof of the mill was caving in when the firemen arrived. Dr. Strock believes the method offers for thefuture in providing full dentures, but to date it has been successfully used only for implanting a sin gle tooth. It Is as simple and as inexpensive as present methods of attaching a single artificial tooth to adjoining teeth. Both Dr. Alvin E, and Dr. Moses S. Strck carried on th experimental work and research in the same hospital. Since I sounded off about peg teeth in 1939 or 1940 I have received some Interesting re ports from people who have peg teeth. One man has had two of them which were implanted in Budapest ?5 years ago; the teeth are still strong and good look ing. A woman, now 43, had four peg teeth implanted and she says: "After 26 years of use I don't see how anyone could say that peg teeth are not practical."
