Newspaper Page TextFOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) Number of Available Claimed Near Level Salem, Ore., June 24 (U.R) Although Oregon employment ilumped to the lowest point in three year during this winter's cold spell, seasonal employment gains through May and the early weeks of June have in creased the number of Jobs to near 1948 and 1B49 levels, the state unemployment compensa tion c 0 m m i a sion repui icu day. Only 30,434 persons were listed by the commission as ac n.,oiu lnnklns for 1obs on June 1 as compared to 39,600 for the same dale in ihiw. me un employment number was re ported as even lower today with a gain in momentum of delayed farm work. Lower Numbar Doubtful However, the commission pointed out that with house wives and students reentering the labor market, it was con sidered doubtful that the num ber of unemployed would be much, if any, lower this sum mer than it is right now. The number of non-agricultural jobs last month reached 421,700, a gain of 12,400 in a month and 3,300 higher than a year before. It was BOO short of the May record set in 1948. Between May and August, 1948, employment reached the all-time high of 461,300 a mark that may be difficult to reach this year, the commision said. Trade and service lines made the best spring recovery this reason when compared with re cent years, but lumber, log ging and construction led the general recovery when com pared with this winters low The number of jobs reported by sawmills and logging outfits Poor Torpedoes Said Reason for War Victory Delay Boston, June 24 (U.R) De fective torpedoes seriously de layed American victory in World War II, naval commenta tor Fletcher Pratt charged to day. "W hen the American sub marines got really good torpe does early In 1944, the Japanese cause began to go to hell in a hurry" Pratt said in an article in the July Atlantic Monthly. False Economy Blamed "There Is no doubt whatever that the war was . . . length ened by the failure of American torpedoes to behave as ex pected." Pratt said the blame lay with "official lassitude, official reti cence, false economy and inade quate research." He cited the experience of the U. S. submarine Tinosa, which fired a torpedo north of Truk that crippled the the Jap anese vessel Tonan Maru No. 3, perhaps the largest tanker in the world. "Lt.-Comdr. L. R. Baspit of the Tinosa maneuvered his sub marine In to 875 yards broad off the tanker's beam and, dur ing a period of several hours, poured 10 more torpedoes Into her, firing for contact (expl sion)," Pratt said. Japt Salvaged Tanktr "Every torpedo hit they could hardly miss at that range and angle but not one went off . . . The Japs towed their damaged tanker home and sal vaged her." Among those to blame for this and other instances of tor pedo failure, Pratt said, was the Roosevelt administration.
