June 23, 1950 Newbry Proposes Stiller Penalties For Drivers Convicted as Drunks Salem, Ore., June 23 (U.R) Motorists convicted of drunken driving will face stiffer penal ties if Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry'i recommendations to the 1951 legislature are incor porated as motor vehicle code amendments, he said today. Grand aerie officials of the FOE in attendance included William Hornblower, San Fran cisco, grand vice-president, and Eddie Johnston, Glendale, Cal., grand trustee. Webb Loy of Bend presided to day as worthy president and Grace Drew of Coos Bay as wor thy madam president. Among public issues to be dis cussed, according to Convention Manager Warren Jones of New berg, will be the state welfare program. Motion Picture To Be Filmed at Grants Pass Grants Pass, Ore., June 23 ftl.R) A Hollywood motion pic ture entitled "Rogue River' will be filmed in the Grants Pass area starting July 15, it was announced today. Picture sequences starring Guy Madi son and Rory Calhoun will be shot in the local courtroom, a bank and several local clubs. Outdoor action will be filmed m the Gallce area, 15 miles south of Grants Pass. Ventura Pictures Corp. will handle the film for release through the Eagle-Lion studio. Washington county's population has grown to 61,221, the bureau of the census announced today. flcme "Spedolish , i ' v. Driver May Reapply The law now provides for rev ocation of the license after con viction, but the driver mvolded may reapply for his license if his application is accompanied by a recommendation from the con victing magistrate.' Newbry says this U the weak point in the code because pres sure often is brought to bear to give convicted drivers another chance. Newby pointed out that an av erage of 300 drivers a month lost their licenses during the fis cal year ending last June, but he added that the revocations figure is growing rather than diminishing. All-Tim Revocation As Newbry put it: "I believe that the amendment will remove the habitual viola tors from the road." Another amendment prepared by the secretary of state's office would call for all-time revoca tion of drivers' licenses from persons convicted of a felony committed with the aid of an automobile. Newbry said this would make it difficult for crim inals to use cars without being picked up by police officers. Back-to-Work Move At Klamath Falls Flops Portland, Ore., June 23 (U.R) President James E. Fadling of the CIO International Wood workers of America said today that return-to-work movements at Klamath Falls had "flopped" in the union's five-week strike against the Weyerhaeuser Tim ber company. 4 strike bulletin charged that Weyerhaeuser foremen in Klam ath Falls "have been practicing what has been held to be an un fair labor practice in many cases that is, contacting the individ ual workers and urging them to accept the 10V4 cents offered by the company."
