Jun 23. 1950 CP Softball Due Tonight; Results Here Central Point, June 23 A Softball doubleheader will oe held tonight starting at 7:30 on the Central Point high school field with Billy's Drive-in meet ing the Lions club in the curtain raiser and Newland and Todd ga rage (Gold Hill) playing South ern Oregon Sugar Pine in the finale. Games In the CP. league last night saw Wiseley's confection ery continue in the undefeated class by blanking Billy's Drive in 0 to 0 and in the second game Newland and Todd toppled the Lions club, 8 to 3. Next Tuesday will be another Softball doubleheader under the floodlights here, with Billy's meeting the Sugar Pine team in the 7:30 opener, followed by Newland and Todd playing Che ney's. These are the only softball games being played this season in the Mcdford area. W (0) Top Southern Oregon Tennis Players To Vie Local Courts Sunday An Inter-city tennis match In volving men from Medford and Klamath Falls playing singles and doubles matches will be held at the local senior high school courts Sunday starting at 10:30 a. m. Sports fans wishing to view the matcnes win db wel come at no charge. Local tennis enthusiasts said that sports fans will have a good opportunity to see some of the Joe McCarthy to Decide Later on Boston Return Buffalo, June 23 U.R) A sick and weary Joe McCarthy brooded at his home today while the baseball world wondered whether the man sometimes called "the greatest manager in baseball history" was washed up. McCarthy's only comment was an evasive "We'll talk about that later," when asked point- blank if he would return as manager of the Boston Red Sox. He flew home from Chicago last night on a doctor's order after remaining in his hotel room since Monday with an at tack of pleurisy. Fli Lousy, He Says "I feel lousy," said the port ly 63-year-old manager who guided the New York Yankees to seven world championships nd eight American league pen nants and twice saw his Red Sox lose the pennant by one game. Joe Cronin, general manager of the Red Sox, issued no offi cial statement but the belief was that McCarthy could reclaim his old Job as soon as his health permitted if he wants it. Cronin has answered frequent reports that McCarthy would retire or be fired with a flat declaration that "McCarthy can manage for the Red Sox as long as he wants. Similar to 1946 McCarthy himself has said re peatedly that he "wouldn't quit a loser." But the current situation was ominously similar to McCar thy's retirement as manager of the Yankees in 1D4B. McCarthy left the club on the road then Portland Midget Race Driver Hurt in Crash Portland, Ore., June 23-U.R) Shorty Clements, Portland mid get auto race driver, was seri ously injured last night in a crash in the second heat of the midget auto races at Portland Meadows. He never resumed com mand and remained in retire ment until the Red Sox induced him to become their manager in 1948. Doctors prescribed "complete rest" for McCarthy and estimat ed that he would be able to take over the Sox command again in a week or so. Meanwhile the Red Sox were under the command of Coach Steve O'Neill, former manager of the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers. Baseball Slated For Area Sunday Camp White, Glendale and Central Point fields will be scenes for games in the semi pro Rogue Valley Baseball league Sunday with "play ball" scheduled for 2 p. m. Playing at the Veterans cen ter field, Camp White, will be Prospect against Eagle Point, while Cave Junction goes to Glendale and Butte Falls plays at Central Point. Last week Sunday the only league games reported to the Mail Tribune found Butte Falls nipping Eagle Point 8 to 7 and Central Point downing Cave Junction 22 to 4. State Baseball Tourney Playoff Results Here Forest Grove, Ore., June 23 (U.R) Newberg downed Tongue Point navnl base here last night, 4 to 2, In the second day's dis trict playoffs for the State Base ball tournament next month. The other scheduled game last night was forfeited by Hillsboro to Cornelius because Hillsboro could not field a full team. Tonight's schedule: Tualatin versus McMinnvllle and Forest Grove against Amity. The play offs will be completed Tuesday night unless rained out. About a month ago Medford and Klamath Falls got together for a team match in Klamath Falls with the eastern Oregon men winning 6 to 4 in close matches. Singles Slated First This coming Sunday's meet will consist of six single matches and four doubles with the singles scheduled first. A feature of the doubles matches is likely to be the match between Howard Dugan and John Richard of Medford, and the N. 1 doubles team of Klam ath Falls. One of the closest singles matches of the day probably will see Tod Tibbutt, Medford, meet ing Ken Karnes, Klamath Falls. The latter is former southern Oregon singles champion for two years while Tibbutt is rated No. 1 man on the Medford tennis squad. Karnes Defeated Tibbutt beat Karnes at Klam ath Falls about a month ago and chances are the match this com ing Sunday will be just as close. Karnes will be out for revenge as the one he lost to the Medford man last month was the first de feat he had had in some time. Taking part in singles matches for Medford on the Sabbath will be Tibbutt, Dugan, Richard, Carl Peters, Warren Deakins and Bud Casey. Teaming for Medford in the doubles will be Dugan and Richard Tibbutt and Deakins, and Peters and Casey. A recently scheduled inter city tennis match between Med ford and Roseburg was called off when it was reported that Rose burg was unable to organize a team. Favor Snead PGA Tourney Columbus, O., June 23 (U.R; Defending Champion Sam Snead of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., went out today for his third PGA golf championship and his first round foe at match play was none other than the old New York Yankee Sammy Byrd. Winner of the $250 qualify ing medal prize with 72-68 140, the picture swinger who al ready leads the nation's pros in money won this year was a heavy favorite to down Byrd and then sail through the winner of a match between Jack Ryan of Louisville, Ky., and Pete Lamb of San Diego as match play opens with two 18-hole rounds. Snead, exempt from qualifying as defending champ but hungry for practice and perhaps the $250, led the 64 qualifiers for match play by two shots with Al Brosch of Garden City, N.Y., second at 142. Lloyd Mangrum of Niles, III., was tied for third with Charley Bassler of Catonsville, Md., at 144. Snead won his first title in 1942 and another last year. West Ladies Golf Tourney Denver, June 23 (U.R) An amateur-professional final in the 21st annual women's western open golf tournament was as sured today as two top pros squared off against each other and two amateurs did the same thing in semi-final matches. The pros are the fabulous Mrs. Babe" Didrikson Zaharias of the Sky Crest Country club near Chicago and Miss Patty Berg, the good n a t u r e d and powerful swinger from Minneapolis. The amateur 18-hole semi- match will bring together smil ing Peggy Kirk of Findlay, Ohio, nd cool, calm and collected Claire Doran of Cleveland. The two winners meet Satur day over the tough Cherry Hills Country club course in a 36-hole final match for the championship. Where To Fish Portland, Ore., June 23 (U.R) The Oregon State Gain Commission today issued the following week-end fishing forecast: Coastal Section Striped bass fishing on Coos Bay is good. Trout angling on streams throughout coastal ares continues poor in gen eral. Surf and bay fishing for sea perch, flounder and kelp fish continues good. Nice trout catches reported from Smith river and upper Neha lem. Upper Umpqua Water con ditions are good to excellent In upper Umpqua area. South Umpqua is clear above Jack son creek. Trout fishing Is good. Many fine catches made last weekend, mostly on bait, but also on wet flies. Upper Rogue Trout fish ing is good in Main river and lower tributaries. Water is clear.
