THE GLASS HOUSE" 1105 COURT MANZ ANITA 2-3231 Oregon Still Top Strawberry State Oregon is still the nation's leading strawberry producing state but is feeling stiff compe tition from Michigan growers, according to the Oregon State college extension course in its weekly tree fruits and nuts crop report. Michigan's tonnage has jumped from well down the line to sec ond place, the extension service said, and this year's crop thore is expected to reach some 21, 300 tons, 40 per cent larger than last year and 65 per cent above average. The Oregon crop, esti mated at about 21,400 tons, is the same size as last year and 30 per cent above average. Pro duction in Michigan averages 3,800 pounds per acre and 3,200 pounds In Oregon. More than, 3,400 12-basket crates of strawberries arrived on the Portland market last week, almost all of them from Oregon, the extension service reported. The carlot movement of Califor nia strawberries was only 37 cars the week ending June 10, compared with 59 the previous week. Total carlot shipments this year to June 10 were 557 carlots compared with 400 at the same time in 1949. Home Loan Bank for Northwest Suggested Portland, Ore., June 22 (U.R) The Pacific northwest confer ence of savings and loan associa tions closed its annual session here yesterday after adopting a resolution urging the re-establishment of a federal home loan bank to serve the area. A spokesmnn for the group said there had been no home loan bank in the Pacific north west since 1946 when the Fed eral Home Loan Bank associa tion consolidated the Portland and Los Angeles hanks to form a single bank in San Francisco. will have modern design and equipment. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sullivan of Los Angeles, parents of Mrs. J. R. Harris of the Mountain View Cafe, Shady Cove, are spending some time here visiting their daughter and husband. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Carey of Napa, Calif., are guests, of Mr. and Mrs. Lew Bellvail of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Bellvail have recently purchased five acres of land in Shady Cove and are building a new home. Mr. and Mrs. Carey came up from Napa to help with the new house. Daily Vacation Bible school for children in Shady Cove-Trall-Prospect area began June 20 at Shady Cove schoolhouse with the Rev. Randall of Med ford in charge assisted by sev eral teachers. The school is from 9 to 12 each day for two weeks. Anyone interested is cordially invited. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Miss Garland's studio, which recently suspended her, disclosed that the star was resting comfortably at her home in Hollywood. McCarthy's Charges . Are Unsubstantiated, Sen. Tydings Claims Washington, June 22 (U.R) Sen. Millard E. Tydings (D., Md.) said today an FBI checkup does not substantiate Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy's charges that state department loyalty files have been "tampered with." The files are those made avail able by President Truman to Tydings' senate communist in vestigating subcommittee. They cover 81 individuals McCarthy has charged with being commu nists, red sympathizers and bad security risks employed, or re cently employed, by the state de partment. Tydings told a news confer ence that the justice department and the FBI checked McCarthy's allegations that the files had been "raped." "tampered with," and "skeltonized." to delete "damaging material." "The charges are not substan tiated by the facts," Tydings said. More male babies than girl babies were born in San Fran cisco in 1949. Public Works Report Shows Many Tasks . The great amount of work be ing handled by the public works department of the city of Med ford is reflected in the depart ment's report for May. During the month 437 miles of streets were swept and 505 miles flushed. Hand sweeping consumed 441$ man days. Crews spent 503-i man days putting 84 ? tons of black top patching on streets and 123 man days putting down 12 tons of cold mix. Two street graders had a total of 18 man days use. Six man days were spent in regular sewer cleaning amount ing to 3,250 feet. Five and one half days were spent on emerg ency sewer cleaning; Nine sew ers were connected taking 221 man hours. Shop repairs took 6134 man days. Twenty-three man days were spent painting 10,837 feet of crosswalks and 620 feet of curbs. Library Board Asks Bids for Addition Medford library board has set 4 p.m., July 25, as deadline for receiving bids for construction of an addition to the library, it was reported yesterday. Bids will be received by the secretary of the board in care of the city superintendent's of fice. Prequalification forms and no tices have been mailed to pros pective contractors. The state ments of qualification must be returned to the superintendent's office by 4 p.m. July 14. Plans and specifications are available on request but a deposit must be made for them. The addition will provide about 50 per cent more floor space at the library. Its design will blend with the plans for long range civic center develop ment in the vicinity on West Main street.
