IfOKT MEDFORB (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE - Sunday, Jun 18, 1950 Manufacturing Payrolls (or Oregon Decline Salem, Ore., June 17 (U.R) Oregon s manulacturing ana con itruction pay rolls declined $36 million in 1949 from 1948's rec ord, but wages paid to workers In trade, finance, utilities ana other service groups increased $6,500,000 over 1948, the state unemployment c o m p e nsation commission reported toaay. Last vear's Dav rolls by cov ered employers showed a 3 per cent decline over the i4 rec ord, to $943,753,414 from $973,-102.450. The entire drop in wage pay ments was reflected in the log ging and lumber industry, with a fall of $29,703,582 to $243, 253,480 or 25.8 per cent of all pay rolls subject to tne unem ployment law. The 1949 average monthly mployment in the woods prod ucts group also dropped irom the 1948 high, to 70,138 from 82,369. The commission reported that overall covered employment av eraged 17,069 a month less than the 1B4H peace-time nign oi aiv, 492. The peak war year employ ment hit 323,969. Only fields showing employ ment gains last year were fi nance, insurance and realty. However, the commission said 1949 average employment in wholesale trade, food processing and utilities was nearly the same as the 1948 totals. By quarters, 1949 fell short of the previous year's record ex cept in the April-June period. Only in the third quarter did 1949 pay rolls reach the billion dollar pace, with $252,607,997. North Bend Passes Coos Bay in Population Coos Bay, June 17 (U.R) North Bend passed Coos Bay by four on the basis of census fig ures received by city officials today, the report showing North Bend with a population of 5.960 to 5,956 for Coos Bay. Coos Bay had a population of 5,259 in 1940 as against 4,262 for North Bend. The North Bend growth rate was 39.6 as against 13 per cent for Coos Bay. The two cities axe separated by a strip of land bout the width of a city block. Lawrenceburg, Tenn., June 17 (U.R) Funeral services were here Friday for Mrs. Emma Hershberger Gingerlch, 39, who died during the birth of her 19th child. Sewage Disposal Line Completion Awaiting Meters Central Point, June 17 Cen tral Point's new sewage disposal (acuities are complete except for the Installation of meters, City Recorder Arden Pinkham j said yesterday. The meters are en route and should arrive shortly, he said. New facilities consist of a sew age pumping station and line I connecting to the Medford-Camp I White trunk. The pump and line will give Central Point Joint use with Medford of the Camp White treatment plant. Joins Medford Lin The pumping station is near Bear creek, adjacent to the John Ellestad property, and the line joins the Medford trunk where it crosses the Central Point Crater Lake road just 'east of the Table Rock road four Cornell. An $85,000 bond issue was re quired for the project. Of this about $72,000 was for actual construction. The remainder was for various fees such as at torney's and engineers' charges and for payment on plans made for a previously contemplated I disposal unit at central f olnt. County's Bond Quota 34 Per Cent Complete Jackson countv has achieved I 34 per cent of its assigned quota i I of $150,000 in the current Inde- I pendence savings bond drive, County Chairman Morris B.
