A pleasant young salesman after learning that my specialty was astronomy asked with evi dent sincerity and pit, "Do you really believe that astronomers can foretell the future by the stars?" My answer was, "No." He said he thought that was the business of astronomers. 2. An educated young woman, who wished to offend no one in the organization before which she was to present a scientific paper, asked this: "Can you ad vise me how to handle the sit uation diplomatically should anyone present assume that I consider astronomy ana astrol ogy identical?" Earle Jossy from the extension office showed the children how to test for nitrogen Model Free Flight Contest Slated On Desert Today The final free flight model airplane competition to be spon sored by the Medford Prop Nuts before the state eliminations, will be held today on Agate desert west of CamD White on the Table Rock road, starting at 10 a.m., weather permitting. Events will include divisions for all sizes of gas-powered planes, one rubber-powered event, a towline glider event and an event for ships powered with the new British Jetex. which is a type of jet motor powered by burning a chemical form, giving off an expanding gas inside a small metal cham ber which is released through very small opening, thus produc ing' the jet effect. Prizes in the form of mer chandise certificates wirth S150 will be awarded, and any flyer of model planes, whether a mem ber of the Prop Nuts or not, is invited to compete. May Lot Planes In this tvoe of contest many times planes are lost on out-ot-sight flights, and residents of the Agate dpsert-Camp White area are urgently asked to report find ing of model planes to the own ers (if name and address are at tached) or to Ed Sims by phon ing 2-2472 or 2-B15B. Recent winners in out-of-town model contests include the fol lowing Prop Nuts: Warren Walk er, Medford, who placed eighth in the West Coast Wakefield eliminations, held in Sacramento last month, In which the two top winners won a trip to Finland; Ray and Larry Edwards, a father and son team, who placed first in "D" speed and second in "B" speed respectively in a speed event held in Coos Bay: Dick Si monson, who placed first in the 180 lap race In Coos Bay, sec ond in a scale event in Eugene and third in a speed event in Eu gene: and Albert Allen who placed third in Class D speed in Eugene last week. and phosphorous In their soil. To make a wholesale at tack on these "believers" Is as offensive as is the denunciation of any religious faith. Heated arguments seem unwise. Every one has a right to his personal belief. One point, however, should be understood by all. Many sup pose that astrologers and astron omers work harmoniously to gether. They do not. But with out classing either group as mis lead, we can confidently state without fear of contradiction from anyone who will investi gate that today no professional astronomer who is teaching in a standard college, working in a large observatory or employed by the government believes in astrology. Maybe all these star gazing scientists are mistaken, but if so they certainly are unanimous in their error. Nothing to Moon Lor 3. A correspondent asks, "Do the phases of the moon have anything to do with crops and the weather?" Again let me sidestep my per sonal views by stating that col lege professors of agriculture, weather bureau officials and the lowly astronomers are practical ly unanimous in their opinion that there is nothing to moon lore or moon signs. They be lieve that beans planted at the "wrong" time of the moon in May have a far better chance of success than when planted at the "proper" moon phase in January. The new moon always has the same tilt (wet or dry) any certain month year after year. 4. Another writes, "Will you recommend a good magazine on astronomy no astrology which is interesting and informative? Among the better-known mag azines of America. I can highly recommend Popular Astronomy, Astrophysical Journal. Astro nomical Journal. Skv and Tele scope. Griffith Observer. Jour- nal of the Royal Astronomical I Society of Canada, and Publica tions of the Astronomical So ciety of the Pacific. ' Some of these are more suited for popular reading than others. A statement of your desired type of reading together with an ad dressed postal for reply sent to this present writer at Eugene, Ore., will bring advice on the magazine suited to ynnr needs.
