He auc tions 'em off cheap. More than 700 fur coats a week go on Sam's auction block. And mink - hungry h o u s e w i ves snap 'm up but quick. "You never saw anything like it," he said. "In the past two years I've sold around 40,000 coats this way." Vb-finU bcPhenofi Mannis, who's 37 and looks like a young Clark Gable, says as far as he knows he's the only fur auctioneer in the country. "Those gals come in there, and they sit around as friendly as can be," he grinned. "Say I bring out some coats that aren't too good. The women pass those dogs up cold. Still friendly, though. No Friendly Bidding "Then I bring out a good mink . . . or a fine muskrat . . . and bro-ther! You can hear a sort of sigh go over the house. Then out come the claws! And there's nothin' friendly about the bid ding from there on in." Mannis stages his auctions all over the city, from San Fernan do Valley to Culver City to Downey to Burbank. Plus a tele vision auction three times a week. He sells all kinds. From "dogs" that go for S3 to passable fur coats for $65 on up to what he calls "darn good mink" for $600. Can Undersell Anybody "I can undersell anybody by half," Mannis says. "Because the way I get the coats in the first place is just plain larceny. "I buy 'em wholesale . . . and usually from a manufacturer who's about to go broke. I offer him cash for his whole inven tory, and he jumps at the deal. "A little while back I got a S64.000 shipment for $20,000. Sure, it's a chisel. But it legal and business is business." With a deal like that, he shrugs, he can afford to let the housewives have their fur coats cheap. He's still making enough to drive around in a fancy Cad illac convertible. June 16 (U.R) Benton, ' Clackamas, Polk and Lincoln counties showed a com bined population increase of 49.3 per cent according to preliminary census statistics released today by District Census Supervisor Cornelius Bnteson here. Benton county population stood at 31,524, a gain of 69 per cent over 1940. Corvallis pre viously had recorded a 92.7 per cent gain since the last census, from 8,392 to 16,173. Nose-counting on the Oregon State college campus accounted for much of the gain, Clackamas Gains Clackamas county had a 51.8 per cent gain during the period. Clackamas county cities, their percentage gains, their 1940 pop ulations and their 1950 popula tions were: Milwaukle, 180 per cent, 1,871 and 5.254: Oregon Citv, 24.2 per cent, 6.124 and 7.616; Oswego. 91.8 per cent. 1,726 and 3,310: Canby, 69.3 per cent. 988 and 1.673. Clackamas count v popula tion rose from 57,130 in 1940 to 86.574 in 1950. Polk countv population went up 30.9 per cent, from 19.989 to 26.184. Dallas population in creased 33 per cent, from 3,579 to 4,744; Monmouth went up from 965 to 1.941; West Salem more than doubled its population from 1.490 in 1940 to 3,047 in 1950; and Independence gained 43.8 per cent, from 1,372 to 1,975. Lincoln County Up On the coast, Lincoln county showed a 6.631 gain during the 10-yoar period, from 14.549 to 21 .180 a 45 5 per cent gain. Newport shnwrd a 59 3 per cent tain, from 2.029 to 3.217: Toledo wont up nnlv 20 to 2 308; Wald nort climbed from 630 to 682. The 1950 preliminary popula tions for other Lincoln countv towns were 635 for Delake, 686 for Oceanlake. 569 for Siletz, and 447 for Taft. Marion county population sta tistics, released earlier this month, showed a 33.4 per cent gain, with Salem topping the list at more than 43,000. Divorcee Quizzed in Death of Infant Mexico City, June 16 Jftl.R) A 20-year-old Greenwich, Conn., divorcee who "didn't know I was pregnant," was held for question ing today in the death of her new-born baby which police said was strangled by a piece of gauze. The infant's body was found in a wastebasket among pieces of newspaper in the luxurious hotel suite of Vera June Hunt, daughter of a Connecticut busi nessman. Miss Hunt said she did not realize she was pregnant and "re member very little" about the baby's birth and death. In a signed statement, Miss Hunt said the child was born unexpectedly after she took some pills prescribed by a phy sician for stomach pains. "I didn't even know I was preg nant," she said.
