Forest Training
Sixty trainees, representing
the key men in the first control
organization of the Rogue River
national forest, left the class
room today and returned to the
field to begin their annual work
of protecting southern Oregon
forests from the ravages of an
other fire season.
The 60 are responsible for the
protection of a forest area cov
ering about a million acres. Dur
ing the past three days they have
been getting instruction in map
reading, the use of fire-finder
instruments, smokechasing. small
fire suppression, the elements of
fire behavior and the factors
which influence fire behavior on
a going forest fire, small crew
action on medium sized fires and
foremanship on large fires where
large crews are employed.
Three-Day School
This year s school for f t r e
guards was held the past three
davs in the Butte Falls ranger
district and was under the super
vision of Verus W. Dahlin, fire
control staff officer for the for
est. The trainees were from all the
ranger districts in the Rogue
River forest Applrgate. Ash
land, Butte Falls, Klamath and
Union Creek. In addition, Dis
trict Rangers Loran J. Cooper,
Applegate; Harold A. Thomas.
Ashland; Robert M. B e e m a n,
Butte Falls; Robert L. Cooper,

meetings and served as instruct
