National AAU Boxing Championship Bout Here June 1 9
Echols Vs.
Halsey Bout
Recognized
The five-round boxing match
between Wes Echols, national
amateur middleweight champion
and Bull Halsey, Portland, will
be recognized by the Oregon as
sociation, AAU, as a fight for
the national title, Larry Bur-
dctte. matchmaker for the South
ern Oregon Boxing club, said he
was advised today.
Burdette said he received sanc
tion for the title fight from Ed
Potter, chairman of the Oregon
AAU.
Injuries forced several changes
in supporting bouts, the match
maker said. The semi-windup
will send Kenny Carothers of
Grants Pass, southern Oregon
welterweight champion, against
Clopper Clink, Portland, in
four-round affair.
Two More Standouts
Another four-round scrap will
pit Al Alexander, clever Port
land Negro lightweight who
made a sensational hit on the
last card, against Chuck Lincoln,
who was eliminated in the finals

The Far West Baseball league

boasts some of the greatest hit
ters in organized baseball.
Last night s games were typi
cal examples of what has been
happening in the league all sea
son. A total ol 85 runs crossed
hdme plate In four contests, rep
resenting the result of 92 hits
and 28 errors.
In the highest scoring game
of the evening, the Eugene Larks
dumped Pittsburg. 16 to 10
Pitchers not only gave up 20
hits but also 22 walks. The Dia
monds helped the Eugene cause
by making seven errors.
The Klamath Falls Gems de
fcated Willows, 14 to 10, despite
four Luminal home runs by Bob
Hayes, uene painter. Bob Mel
son and Jim Lucker. There were
30 hits in this game.
Meanwhile, the Reno Silver
Sox chalked up their 18th win in
the last 19 stnrts by slaughtering
Medford. IS to 3, and Marysville
edged Redding, 9 to 8.

burg, Cal., where Medford opens

Gruell, a righthander who has
been sent to the Rogues by the
New York Giants with whom
Medford has a working agree
ment this season, and Bill Fran
cis, a portsider, who has been
with Riverside, Cal., of the Sun
set league.
Gruell is scheduled to grad
uate from Ventura Junior col
lege this week, while Francis
has been used mostly in relief
roles with the Riverside club.

nament went into the third round
today.
Clark, Oregon amateur cham
pion, posted a 65 yesterday for
a 36-hole total of 139. Clark
took the lead from Al Mengert
of Spokane, Wash., who faltered
on the fourth nine to take a 74.
This gave Mengert a total of 142
and shoved him into fhird place.
