Billion Dollar Club
Still Has 56 Members

The exclusive Billion Dollar club
of American enterprises still has
56 members but the club's assets
have increased to an all-time
peak of more than $135 billion,
survey by the United Press
revealed today.
Dissolution of Commonwealth
& Southern removed that cor
poration from the lust of com
panies with assets exceeding $1
billion. But its place was taken
by New Eland Mutual Life.
Insurance company.
Still In Class
Though another fatality to the
Public Utility Holding Company
act. American Power & Light
still was in the billion-dollar
class as of December 31. 1849.
However, plan for its dissolu
tion went Into effect early this
year.
Total holdings of the billion

Robinson and Jean Hamilton of
this district. Miss Hamilton was
valedictorian and also winner of
two scholarship awards.
The Milford Vanderpool fam
ily were among Sunday visitors

Considerable hay In the swath
and windrows was damaged here
by the rain and a field of tall
rye and vetch was badly lodged.
Ernest Hamilton has returned
to his home here following close
of Oregon State college at Cor
vallis. Sunday's rain was of great
benefit to late sown grains and
other crops here and according to
O. T. Wilson who does some
farming in the Sams Valley dis
trict was a life saver there
where .-onie late planted crops
were still unsprouted.

The assets of 44 of the club's
members increased last year
while those of 11 declined.
The Bell System widened its
lead over Metropolitan Lite In
surance to more than $1 billion
and maintained its position as
th largest business enterprise
for the third consecutive year.
Its assets increased $775 million
to $10,775,234,113.
Position Improved
Metropolitan Life Insurance
improved its position by $582
million and extended its margin
slightly over third place Pru
dential Life. In the only change
in standing of the top ten,
Equitable Life moved into fifth
place from sixth, exchanging
places with National City Bank
of New York.
New York Central had the
largest increase in its group. It
added $662 million to its assets
to move Into the $2 billion class
of which there now are 20 such
corporations, two more than last
year. The other company to
make the Jump was Mutual Life.
The club's membership com
prises 20 banks, 18 industrial
corporations, 13 insurance com
panies and five utilities.

An expert on such togs, he said
it is now socially acceptable for
men as well as women to be clad
in lounging pajamas instead of
street clothes when entertaining
at home.
Lovell came to the conclusion
that the pajama has progressed
from simply a sleeping attire to
the fashionable thing after a nation-wide
survey on the subject.
Women, who buy almost all
the men's pajamas sold, art re
sponsible for this newest trend,
he said. Of those interviewed,
84.6 per cent thought it was a
good idea.
"Gone are the days when pa
jamas were used In the bedroom
alone." he said. "There's nothing
objectionable about this, there's
no rule that says you must wear
heavy outer garments at home."
Idaa Is Comfort
The idea. Lovell said. Is to be
as cool and as comfortable as
possible.
Pointing out that women en
tertained at cocktail parties and
dinners in hostess pajamas,
Lovell said this comfort should
be extended to men."
Lovell is horrified at the
thought of people sleeping raw.
It's uncomfortable, immodest
and unlienlthful, he said.
"Doctors will tell you that
you should wear a garment
while asleep," he said. "Most
summer colds are due to sleep
ing without pajamas."

Bill Endorsed to
Make Bradley
Five-Jlar General

Defense Secretary Louis John
son has endorsed legislation to
give Gen. Omar N. Bradley,
chairman of the Joint chiefs of
staff, the five-star rank of Gen
eral of the Army.
If approved by congress, It
would be the first five-star rank
created since World War II when
four generals and four admirals
were given that rank perman
ently.
In a letter to Chairman Carl
Vinson, (D., Ga.) of the house
armed services committee, John
son wrote:
Entitled to Honor
"In my opinion, nothing that
any of us can do to honor Gen.
Bradley can exceed the honors
to which he is entitled for his
outstanding contributions to the
security of this nation."
The bill is sponsored by Hep.
Paul Shafer, (R., Mich.). No hear
ings have been scheduled.
One argument advanced for
giving Bradley another star is
to put him on par with Gen.
Douglass MacArthur, supreme al
lied far eastern commander, the
only five-star general on active
duty.
Adms Chester w. Nimitz, tr
nest J. King and William Leahy
are the other five-star officers
listed as being on active duty.
Nimitz Is assigned to the United
Nations and King and Leahy are
ill.
TORNADOES DAMAGE TOWN
