WHAT I LEARN Having landed on the lonely isle, Tristan da Cunha (all wet), and seen for myself, I am happy to report that the good people there, young and old, have the finest tceth of any civilized people in the world, and so far as I can learn, of any other people, white, yellow, brown or black, anywhere. All told there are Dr. Brady only 265 or 270 people there. They live only on Tristan. Tristan da Cunha is a group of three lonely volcanic Islets in the south Atlantic, as far south of the Equator as Louisville or Los Angeles is north of it. How the navigator of our ship, sailing east from Rio de Janeiro, hit these incredible flyspecks on the globe the very first try is as great a mystery to me as what makes an automobile go when you turn the key and release the brake. But he hit 'em, or I should say he would have hit them had he not stopped the ship two or three miles out. From there on in the going was not so easy. . There are three islets In the Disputed Gun Causes Law Merry-Go-Round Hinton. W. Va. (U.R) Roscoe Gill got his shotgun back but it took four warrants and five counter-charges to do it. Gill swore out a warrant for Billy Bryson when he found the missing gun in Bryson's posses sion. Bryson claimed he got the gun from Noah Palmer, and swore out a warrant for Palmer. Palmer passed the buck to Ralph Gill, and swore out a warrant for him. RalDh Gill blamed Donald Ward for the theft, but couldn't convince the police and wound ud naying a fine. To complicate matters, Frank AdKins, an inmate at tne local jail, told police the gun actually belonged to him. Adkins wanted a warrant for Roscoe Gill, but police decided the matter had gone far enough. They let it drop mere. Medford Student to Get Doctor Degree Portland, Ore., June 12 The University of Oregon medical school will confer the degree of medical doctor on Robert Glenn Pittenger, Medford, in the 63rd annual commencement exercises in the medical school auditorium here June 16. Fifty-eight medi cal degrees, one doctor of phil osophy, and one master of sci ence degree will be awarded. Memphis. Tenn. (U.R) The Memphis general depot posted a list of salvage items for sale just at the start of a heat wave, one item was listed as "Creepers. ice. 1981 pairs." Translated, that means spiked shoes for walking on ice. Hydramatic, pioneered by Olds mobile and used on U. S. tanks, costs $158.50 extra on Olds, Pontiac. Kaisers and Frazers and Nash cars. On Cadillac and Lin coln, its $174.25. 2. The toque converter. This design, used in Buick's dyna flow ($169) and Chevrolet's power-glide ($158.50), has no gears all. In the converter, the engine's torgue or twist forces oil to bounce off a reflector into a complex "catcher's mitt" of met al vanes. There is no step from one gear to another; one smooth and powerful flow of oil changes speed of the car. These transmis sions eliminte the slight "click" you get in hydramatic when gears shift. But there is some "slippage" at certain speeds. Reiamblea Studebaker 3. Combinations of the torque converter and mechanical gearf or direct drives. Packard aells for $185 a transmission called ulta-matic which basically re sembles Studebaker's automatic drive, price $201.25. Both Packard and Studebaker devices "lock out." That is. af ter a certain speed Is reached, the torque converted leaves the picture completely and mechan ical drive takes over all auto matically. The toque gives pow erful acceleration whenever needed. No clutch pedal Is used with either automatic shift. Later this year, Ford will have an automatic transmission combining the toque converter principle, but using three plan etary gears the same way hydra matic does. But in the Ford transmission, which will sell for under $150, the torque replaces fluid coupling. Different Nam In the Chrysler line, Chrys lers, De Sotos and Dodges offer the same type of semi-automatic transmissions, but they have dif ferent names prestomatlc, tip toe hydraulic shift and gyro matic. They use a fluid coupling plus conventional clutch, opera t by foot pedal. Hudson's super-matte, costing $199.31, combines overdrive with a fluid coupling and semi-automatic shifting. Most engineers agree that the trend is toward the torque con verter, or some form of torque combination. But don't tell that to a hydra-matic man. Unless you know your gear ratios and torque multiplication tables, you've got an argument on your hands. ED ON TRISTAN group. Tristan itself is about 16 miles square or zu miles in circumference. I didn't have time to walk around It in tact, I found the walking, lumping, creeping and climbing pretty strenuous for a bare half mile along the rocky shore. The other two islets of the group, called Inaccessible and Nightingale, lu to zu miles away. are uninhabited, only a mile or two in area. The extinct volcanic peak of Tristan is nearly IV miles above sea level and its dead crater is now a fresh water lake or reser voir, 150 yards in diameter, which never freezes over. This and smaller crater lakes on the island supply plenty of fresh wa ter for the Inhabitants, whose stone, thatched roof dwellings are all in one settlement on a plateau about 100 feet above sea level, which overlooks a narrow stretch of beach where the islanders can shove off and land their four-oared home-made boats. Beach, eh? Well, it looked black enough as we approached it, but still it seemed free from dangerous rocks which stood out menacingly on either side of the 30-yard gap. The pilot instructed me to crouch in the prow and when they shoved her in to jump for It. I still believe they were laugh ing in their bellies at the gulli bility of the foreign visitor. Ex cept that it was black the beach looked like good solid sand. Between two rollers I Jumped for it and I believe I would have made a perfect landing but for the treachery of that black sand. It proved to be nothing but vol canic ash and it gave away like so much quicksilver. The next roller rolled me up on the beach sopping and well, what would you have said in my place? "Pshaw!" I suppose. The Tristan people are of American. British, Scandinavian, Dutch. Italian origin, descend ants of sailors of the whaling days, soldiers of Napoleon's St. Helena days, mariners ship wrecked in the vicinity and some voluntary settlers from Cape Colony and England. The inhabitants have always depended principally upon pota toes for food. Potatoes are their main crop, on the limited patches of arable soil among the barren rocks. In the past when the potato crop failed they were in dire peril of famine, for ships reached the islet only on rare oc casions. Besides potatoes they arise wheat, oats, some vegetables, keep cows, sheep, geese, ducks and chickens for milk, cheese, eggs. wool. They kill and eat meat only on special holidays such as Christmas. From the sea they get plenty of fish and especially a fine grade of cray fish with delicious white meat resembling American lobster. Tristan crayfish are so abundant that a London-Capetown com pany is now establishing a plant on Tristan to can and ship the crayfish to American and other markets. This commercial Invasion of the "lonely" isle probably marks the end of the good health era of Tristan da Cunha. Hitherto the people there, as I have said, not only enjoyed ex traordinary longevity and free dom from the physical degenera tions (hardening of the arteries, slow heart muscle failure, rheu matiz. diabetes, "liver com plaint" etc.) which plague and shorten the lives of wiseacre Americans; but they have liter ally confounded the great Amer ican toothbrush and dentifrice vendors and their gullible custo mers (laymen and dentists) by (a) having no use for toothbrush es andor dentifrices and (b) having the best preserved teeth of any people or tribe in the world.
