LEROY JENSEN School Board Candidate Jacksonville Sets Irrigation Hours For Water Saving Jacksonville, June 10 Jack sonville city council, at the reg ular meeting June 6, took meas ures to begin conservation o water. Because the supply drops rapidly when irrigation begins, residents in the north precinct are asked to confine use of water for irrigation to the hours from 8 to 9 a.m., and 8 to p.m., ana to use water only on Mondays. Wednesdays and Fridays: those in the couth precinct to observe the same hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It was pointed out at the coun cil meeting that Jacksonville, with the same water supply which served 700 residents ten years ago, is now supplying about twice that number. There is plenty of pure spring water going to waste all the year ex cept during the irrigation sea ion when more is consumed than can be supplied at one time, and then the water is used from the big reservoir and it is the lat ter supply that has to be con served, it was stated. The council also passed the new budget for 1950-1951, it hav ing been approved recently by the budget committee. The city is still operating within the six per cent limit, and receiving very little of its operating ex pense money from taxation, the main source of revenue being water receipts. In spite of con siderable increase in operating expenses, through the good man agement of Mayor Albert Hack ert and the council, the city is practically out of debt and is able to add a new chief of police and a car which they consider a ne cessity for the chief to perform his duties efficiently. A car was also purchased for the water su perintendent this year and re pairs are now being made to the old city hall building. Church Uia Given A delegation was present from the First Baptist church at Ash land to request use of the old historic church building for wor ship. Tha request was granted, the hope being expressed that tourists coming here on Sundays and during the coming jubilee may find food for the soul as well as relaxation for the body. It was decided by the council that everything possible be done to make the Jubilee clean and attractive, the council taking steps to control use of intoxi cants. The council set June 27 to accept applications for the Job of water superintendent for the new fiscal year, according to Mrs. Lorraine Berntson, recorder. Medford Doctor Files Candidacy For School Board Dr. Lerey Jensen, Medford physician and surgeon for the past is years, yesteraay an nounced his candidacy for a five- year term as Medford school The annual election will be held on Monday. June 19. In reporting h i s candidacy, Jensen said that he is vitally in terested in the youth of this com munity and desired the best edu cation available for them. He has two children, Jon, six, and Ann, three. Cites Beliefs Dr. Jensen said he believes in sound and progressive education al practices, solid business prin ciples in schools and full coop eration between the public and the teaching profession. The doctor has practiced medi cine since 1923. He practiced at Astoria for seven years and spent three years in Europe. Dr. Jensen owns his home at 1121 South Oakdale avenue. He stated that he likes the people of this community and plans to remain here the rest of his life. Second Candidate Dr. Jensen was the second as pirant for the school board post to file nomination acceptance at the school office by Saturday noon. Dunbar Carpenter previ ously filed. The term of John P. Moffat expires and he declined to seek reelection. Friends of Mrs. Moore Hamil ton, wife of the Medford post master, filed a nominating peti tion yesterday morning support ing her as a candidate, but Mrs. Hamilton said Saturday after noon she would require some time to consider the matter. She added that she had not planned to become a candidate and fell that she should take some time to weiyh the niattrr b-fore an nouncing a decision. Acceptance of candidacy must be made by next Tuesday, according to school officials. Ray Watkins Installed By Eagles Lodge Here Ray Walkins was installed as worthy president of the Crater Lake aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles, at recent ceremonies.
