Bolen Leaves Rogues Team Pitcher Due A "give and take" proposition involving the Medford Rogues and the Idaho Falls team In the class C Pioneer league, both farm clubs ot the New York Giants, hit a snag today with the announcement that Idaho Falls probably will wait a week or so to send its player. What happened was that Med ford needs a veteran pitcher and a deal was worked out that sent Third Baseman Al Bolen to Idaho Falls in exchange for that hurler. Business Manager Mel Carpenter of the Rogues ex pected the hurler to come right away so Bolen left yesterday. However, word came late yes terday that Idaho Falls could not fulfill its end of the bargain so soon. Bolen is on his way east to Idaho Falls and Medford is lacking a pitcher. The Idaho club was long on veteran players and short on rookies so the deal with the Rogues was figured to help both clubs. Carpenter explained here. Studs, Myrtle Creek Play Sunday 2 P.M. Medford High Field Central Point, June B Sun day, June U, the Central Point Studs meet the strong Myrtle Creek semi-pro ball club on the Medford high school diamond at 2 p.m. In Southern Oregon league standings Myrtle Creek is cur rently in second place with three wins and one loss while the Studs are in first place with four wins and no losses. Instead small gifts will be mailed to each senior class boy as a present from the Booster organization. These were to have been presented tonight. Cancellation of the event was deemed necessary when a school dance for seniors was recalled by the boys. Stamper said that the Booster club will try to put on dinner for the senior class track squad members after next season. College Track Meet Slated Milwaukee. June 9 (U.R) A record field of trackmen from 53 colleges threaten the records at the 25th ,mual Central Collegi ate Track and Field meet in Mar quette stadium tomorrow. "At least 9 of the 16 records are in danger," Athletic Direct ors Conrad Jennings of Mar quette and Ralph Young of Mich igan State agreed. They will be co-referees at the silver anni versary of the meet they founded with the late Knute Rockne of Notre Dame. Michigan State ranked as the favorite to retain the team title and the Rockne Memorial trophy. The biggest opposition probably will come from Wisconsin. Notre Dame, Michigan Normal and Oklahoma A. & M. Danny Stupur, former Med ford Nuggets hurler and now with Pueblo, Colo., of the class A Western league, has been plac ed on the disabled list because of a spur on his pitching elbow. Neither team has played each other this sea son but comparable scores show the two teams to be evenly matched. The Studs won from Grants Pass 7 to 2 and Myrtle Creek won easily 9 to 4 over this same team. The Studs have shown power ful strength at the plate with Norm Lucich leading the- timers with a .537 percentage, followed by Moose Blevins (.409), Alex McDonald (.405), Clarence Mell bye (.361), Frank Roelandt (.359), Dint Cox (.282). Norm Lucich is also leading the homerun parade with three round trippers. Clarence Meu bye with two and Frank Roe landt with one. Golfing Kid Paces 'Open' Ardmore, Pa., June 9 (U.Rl A golfing whiz Kid from Ala bama shot the best round in the 50-year-old history of the U. S. open championship and the ques tion today as the field teed off for the second round was wheth er he was a one-day wonder. Most of the 161 golfers who set out to overtake him figure he was. But not Lee Mackey Jr., a 26- year-old unemployed professional from Birmingham, Ala., wno really burned the treacherous Merion Country club links up brown yesterday when he shot a six nnder par 64. The crew-cutted six footer, an unknown among the host of her alded golfers trying for the championship, put his better known contemporaries to shame with his long and straight tee shots, his superb iron play and his precision putting. Medford Golfers To Play on Team Rogue Valley Country club has received recognition with an invitation to George Harrington and Eddie Simmons to play on an out-of-Portland golf team that will oppose a Portland team on Sunday, July 9, at Eugene The affair will be a warm up for the Oregon Golf association tourney that starts on the fol lowing day at Eugene. There will be eight men on each team. Twenty-three Rogue Valley linksmen have signed for the team-match Jaunt to fiiamatn Falls on Sunday. Among the leaders of the local aggregation will be Harrington, Dr. Bruce Stanley, Dr. Ralph Odell and perhaps Simmons. Rogue River High Names Two Coaches Rogue River, June 9 Ap pointment of two graduates at Oregon State college and Uni versity of Oregon as combina tion teachers and coaches at Rogue River high school was announced today by school of ficias here. Named were Ernest Neal, for mer Oregon State student, who will teach biology, world history and physical education as well as coach basketball and track, and Russell Hawk, ex-Webfoot, who will teach social economics, general science and physical edu cation as well as coach football and basketball. Wtbb to Oregon Stat - Melville Webb, who has been coaching sports here, has re signed and Is said to be planning to attend summer school this summer at Oregon State college. It was reported that Rogue Klver high will play u-man football this fall along with Phoe nix high and possibly Cave Junction which may not have enough students to be an A school. . There is some possibility also that the Chieftains will have to play in class A circles along with Medford, Central Point, Grants Pass, Eagle Point, Ash land and Klamath Fals when the basketball and baseball sea sons roll around. May Be "A" School The Rogue River school prob ably will have more than 150 students this fall but this will not effect fall sports. B schools in sports are those with i or less average daily attendance. The class A classification would start with basketball. Coaches will assist the other in athletics they do not ordinarily coach. They also will work in a intra mural and junior varsity sports program together. Both are veterans of World War II and Neal played basketball while at Oregon State. Diving Class To Open Friday at Park's Pool A diving class open to men, women and children interested in learning this sport or improv ing meir abilities, win open tri day at the Hawthorne park pool with Norm Worthley and Dutch Bromley as instructors. The Medco Loggers have won four and lost none in league games to date. Other Valley loop games on the Sabbath will send Eagle Point to Glendale and Prospect to Central Point. The tilt at Central Point should prove a close game with the Prospect nine having a three wins and one loss record while Central Point's Millers have won two and lost as many. "Play ball" will be at 2 p.m. at all three diamonds. Tennis Play Quarterfinal Cleveland, June 9 U.R The remaining quarter-final matches in the professional tennis tourna ment tonight will pit Jack Kra mer against Carl Earn and Bob by Riggs against Jack March. Kramer and Riggs. rivals of long standing along the pro cir cuit, are heavily favored to breeze past their opponents and thus join Frank Kovacs and Pan cho Segura in the semi-finals. Kovacs, although still both ered with a sore shoulder, gained the semi-finals last night by whipping Frank Parker, 6-0, 6-0, 8-1. while Segura advanced by dumping Welby Van Horn, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. Where To Fish Portand, Ore., June 9 (U.R) The Oregon state game com mission today reported the following weekend fishing conditions and prospects: Coastal section Trout fish ing in coastal streams has been poor with no prospects of improvement for the com ing weekend. Streams in Curry county are improving for the coming weekend. Streams in Curry county are improving but salmon fishing in the Rogue river continues poor. Upper Umpqua Water con ditions era unpredictable for the weekend, but the streams are high and murky at the present time. However, trout fishing with worms and eggs has been fair. Upper Rogue No report. Reports from Lake o' Woods resort late this week indicated fishing was good there with the limit obtained in a few hours. Best entrance is through Dead Indian road. The resort said boats are available if people arrive early in the morning without reservations. The resort phone is not hooked up as yet. Reports from Diamond lake said that 50,000 legal siied trout had been planted there by the state game commission in the last three days. Ken neth Cochrun in charge of the area for the commission made the announcement. Friday. The May total was a drop of 36.6 per cent from April and 16.8 per cent from a year ago. Benefits Exhausted Only 9,690 persons received checks during the last week of May compared with 18,338 late In April and 14,419 a year ago. In its monthly report, however, the commission said 26,706 cov ered workers had exhausted their 1949-50 benefit rights against 18,058 at this time last year. The fiscal year ends Juno 30. ' Payments from the state fund for the current benefit year reached $25,265,748, a new rec ord since compensation began in January, 1938. During the same period $1,247,496 went to un employed veterans under the GI bill of rights, but most of that program ended last August. Oregon's unemployment re serves decreased slightly in May to $71,228,249, lowest since early 1947 and a decline of $11,294, 060 from a year ago. 143,000 Claims on File Nearly 143,000 claims were on file with the commission as the benefit year neared its end. Of these, 124,000 were found valid and 11.000 drew at least one check. All of these figures, the commission noted, are establish ing new annual highs. The Portland office, with May payments reaching $472,363, ac counted for almost 40 per cent of the state total, contrasting with only 24.6 per cent in Feb ruary, when downstate seasonal layoffs were heavy. About 19 per cent of those re ceiving compensation were log ging or lumber workers and more than 11 per cent were food processors. In the Portland met ropolitan area, trade employes led with 19 per cent, construc tion had 17V4 per cent and food processing 15 per cent. Cause of Washington Earthquake Explained Seattle, Wash.. June 9U.R A University of Washington ge ologist reported today he had discovered the cause of the mighty earthquake which rocked the Pacific northwest on April 13. 1949. Dr. Charles E. Weaver said the quake could be blamed on a pre viously unknown "fault" In the Black hills southwest of Olym pia, Wash. Dr. Weaver spent three weeks In the area ana several months in the laboratory before an nouncing his findings. He said the "fault" runs along a line of possibly 100 miles, along which more quakes could develop. Last year's northwest quake caused millions of dollars dam age and resulted in nine deaths. Dr. Weaver said the fault runs in a straight line from the hills northeastward to near Olympia, and that it may extend on through Seattle. All 58 California counties con tributed to mineral production in 1947. Businessmen Remind License Fees Due Business houses, hotels, apart ments, building rentals, contract ors and businesses or services, professional branches of busi nesses or agents or managers of firms or corporations doing busi ness within the city require li censes, and notices will be mailed June 20 for the new fiscal year, the city license bureau reported today. Any new business or service not yet licensed may apply at the license collectors office at the city hall. Legal action will be taken if licenses are not paid within a reasonable time, it was said. Secretary Employed Miss Erma Deets, Ashland, has been employed as secretary in the Medford city police office, it was reported today. She will do general office work. Miss Deets formerly worked for the First National bank, Ashland branch, and for justice court at Klamath Falls.
