Swimming Classes At City Pool to Begin June 15 Registration for swimming in struction at the new Hawthorne park swimming pool should be completed by June 15, it was announced today by Norman Worthley, manager of the pool. The Red Cross will cooperate In the courses, and all instruction will be done by qualified Red Cross instructors. Registration blanks for the classes are now available at the Red Cross office In the court house, the Junior Red Cross of fice in the Holly Theater build ing and at the park pool office. Boy and Girl scouts may get registration blanks at their own headquarters. The blanks should be signed by parents and re turned to the pool. 300 in Clan The first 300 registered may enter the class to start June 19, from 8 to 10 a. m. daily, Monday through Friday. Red Cross cer tificates will be issued to all graduates of the various courses offered in swimming, including intermediate, advanced and jun ior and senior life saving. The instruction courses are free. Red Cross volunteers will as sist with registration and at the pool during class periods. Volun teers wishing to help may call the Red Cross office, 2-4405. Camp, Central Point, will be a candidate for depart ment of Oregon commander of the Disabled American Veterans when the group holds its state convention in Eugene June 13 to 16, it was learned today. Mr. Camp is now department chap lair . t i Camp will conduct the memorial services in Eugen. oiine 13. This service is the only convention session open to the public. A large crowd is anticipated, and it will be the fourth consecutive year that Chaplain Camp has presided at this ceremony. He has gained na tional recognition in this field, and before coming to Oregon he presented the colemn ritual in Washington, DC, Minnesota and South Dakota. Chaplain Camp's memorial ad dress will be entitled "The Prince of Peace Rides." Mr. Camp is a member of Jackson county chapter No. 8, Disabled American Veterans. Twenty-three delegates from this chapter plan to attend the state convention. Moro Girl Winner In 4-H Stock Show The Dalles, Ore., June 8 (U.R) For the second consecutive year, 18-year-old Diane Christianson of Moro has won top award in the 4-H and Future Farmers of America fat stock show and sale. Her 1,005 pound Hereford took the grand championship award in the 4-H beef division yesterday. Last year her 4-H Southdown cross lamb won the grand championship. Edwin Balsiger. also of Moro. exhibited the reserve champion steer, an Angus. Duane Eakin, Powell Butte, exhibited the win ning shorthorn. Russell has arrived from Hillsboro, Ore., to super vise opening of the new service station adjacent to the Medford hotel. Russell, who operated a station in Hillsboro for the past eight years, has purchased the new station. Russell said the station will be ready for a formal opening about June 15. Mrs. Russell and the couple's two daughters remained in Hills boro to dispose of property there and expect to come to Medford some time during the summer. One daughter, Marilyn, will be a junior in high school, and the second, Nancy, will be an eighth grader. Dead line for Sunday Classified is at Noon Saturdays. Baby Chinese Deer Goes for Stroll New York, June 8 (U.R) A rare Chinese water deer, only a few hours old and weighing 24 ounces, escaped from the Bronx zoo last night and for several hours walked through city streets. The fawn was found by a traf fic patrolman several blocks from the Bronx zoo. Zoo uathorities said it was a miracle the baby deer, about the size of a rabbit, survived its wobbly journey through traffic. They were busy putting a wire screen with finer wire mash around its enclosure. The deer's mother is one of four donated to the zoo in 1947 by the' Duke of Bedford. Full grown they are 14 inches high. Request for Busses On Sundays Supported Portland. Ore., June 8 (U.R) Public Utilities Commissioner Fred L. Peterson today support ed a Portland traction company request to use gasoline busses in place of trackless trolleys on on Sundays and holidays. Gordon Steele, PTC president, said only emergency electric line work is done on Sundays and holidays. If the trolleys were used a full crew must stand by. Without trolleys the "extra day" crews could be dropped. This would have the company about $25,000 a year, Steele said. The move would be made without cutting down the total number of linemen. Peterson's recommendation will be presented to the city council on June 15. Thursday. Junt 8, 1950 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE TOREK 50,000 Drug Addicts Believed in Nation Washington, June 8 (U.R) Senate crime investigators have been informed that 50.000 drug addicts receive narcotics from illegal peddlers across the na tion, Chairman Estes Kefauver devested today. The Tennessee democrat, head of a special committee conduct ing a $150,000 inquiry into nation-wide crime syndicates, said the figures came from Federal Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. Anslinger. Anslinger also gave the com mittee the names of an 800 member narcotics ring which, he said, was directed by a "tre mendously powerful combine." He added that the group had interests in gambling, white slav ery, murder and other rackets in major U. S. cities. The nar cotics commissioner and his aides testified before the committee Tuesday.
