Y., tell the story of a mother's heroism that pre vented a tragedy. Science at Work New Vaccine Developed to Protect Dogs From Rabies Man Also to Benefit by Its Use By Paul F. Ellis United Press Science Editor New York. June 8 U.R' Man is helping his "best friend" to overcome a serious and usually fatal disease. Man. in turn, is helping to prevent the same ailment, rabies, in himself. The new development is a rabies vaccine for dog immuni zation, described as "the most important step taken toward elimination of rabies as a fatal disease since the work done by Pasteur." It was Louis Pasteur, the French scientist, who first de veloped a vaccine against rabies. His work led to the develop ment of vaccines in other dis eases. Vaccine Made Available The new vaccine was develop ed by Drs. Herald R. Cox and Hilary Koprowski, researchers in the field of virus diseases, and on the staff of the Lederle la boratories division, American Cyanamid company. Pearl River, N. Y. It was in the same labora tory where aureomycin, a pow erful new drug for human use, was first developed. The researchers, who expect the new material will be made available to all veterinarians and to state sanitary and public health officials, said the vaccine is produced from live virus which has been modified by growth in chick embryos. It does not contain brain or spinal cord tissue, substances that made the old type of vac cine material somewhat danger ous for human use, and dogs, too for that matter. In the old type of vaccine, the material was made from killed rabies virus grown in tissues from the brain and spinal cords, or the use of fixed live virus from the same sources. Rabies Still Top Problem Dr. Cox said rabies, or hydro phobia as it is commonly known, still is a top public health problem. He said: "In recent years, more than 7,000 cases of rabies in dogs and more than 30 cases in humans have been reported annually, with the probability that a great many additional cases are never reported. "The fear of rabies is world wide. The so-called 'reservoir' of rabies exists .primarily in the wild animal population of the Japanese Newspaper Men Ordered Banned Tokyo, June 8 (U.R) Gen Douglas MacArthur today ban ned from all party activities 17 editors of the communist party newspaper Akahata. The move was in retaliation for their de fiant nationwide general strike call protesting MacArthur's purge of 24 top communist party leaders. At the same time there was speculation that MacArthur may order Russian delegates to the allied control council here to leave Japan if they continue to boycott council meetings. They failed to show up again today. Boy Scout News Cub Pack 3 Cub scout Pack 3 and parents and brothers and sisters of pack members will picnic Sunday, June 11, at Jackson Hot springs. The picnickers will gather there between 1 and 1:30 p.m. country and is transmitted from them to the dog. The number of human beings affected seems rather small, but the disease is dreaded because of the horrible convulsions by its victims and the complete certainty of death once symptoms become ap parent. "Because of the uniform fatality among rabies victims, the great hope of survival in rabies is prevention." New Vaccine Has Safety The Lederle scientists said the new vaccine has been tested on about 10,000 dogs and that none suffered any serious effects. Some dogs after being vaccinat ed were injected with the rabies virus, but the disease was thrown off. They said veterinarians will be able to immunize a dog against rabies by a single injec tion and that if dog owners would cooperate with the vac cination programs as organized by public health officials, rabies can be controlled effectively and eventually eliminated. And De La Vallade worked in a dairy, Footlighters Plan Aid to Girl Scouts At the June meeting of the Footlighters, civic theater group, Monday evening, plans were laid for instruction o f local eighth and ninth grade Girl scout groups, June 12 through June 23, for merit badges in dramatic activity. Several Footlighters members will work voluntarily in the pro ject. A request had been made to the group for the instruction by local Girl scout day camp chairman, Mrs. Fletcher Stout. The Monday meeting was one of the most significant since the Footlighters had organized, ac cording to Keith Hopkins, vice- president. Many newcomers at tended, with a record turn-out of older members, to hear Mrs. Phyllis Beardsley, Ashland, speak on potentialities of the theater in the church. A success ful playwright in that field her self, Mrs. Beardsley pointed out the scope of drama as a medium for messages and stimulation of better living. Jim Sullivan, educational di rector, outlined a dramatic training progra'm for the next three months which will include presentation of play readings to familiarize members with cur rent and classic drama; opera tion of an entertainment unit for service to other civic organiza tions, and weekly classes in theatrical essentials of make-up, costuming, dramatic criticism and play direction. f'K HKNV WIS!
