Harmon Nichols
plan.
He looked at the national rec
ord. It wasn't good. In 1948,
more than 500 children were
killed when dumped off their
bikes by cars. That same year
there were 30,000 other acci
dents in which young folks were
maimed in car-bike mishaps. -
So Palmer and his helpers de
cided to teach the small fry of
Arlington county something that
might save a lite or a umD.

Late in August they're going
to have a bike rodeo for all com
ers. There will be movies show
ing how to and how not to
ride a bicycle. There will be an
inspection of breaks, seats, lights,
reflectors, tires, chains, lubrica
tion, and a look at the wheels to
see if they are in line.
"These things are as import
ant in a bike as In an automo
bile," Palmer said. "Bad brakes,
or handlebars that are on the
bias can be as dangerous on a
two-wheeler as on a four-wheeler.
Will Get Sticker
"If the kids pass, we'll give
them a sticker to paste on their
fender. Later we will issue li
cense tags which the young folks
can tack onto the back of their
bikes. Good psychology, too."
In case a boy or girl fails to
pasB the test, the county gives
him or her 30 days to fix things
up so they can get well with
Arlington county.
As an incentive, the eounty
civic leaders put up $300 in
prizes for safe bike-riding.

Don t ride in street car track

Don t ride two on a bike. It s
dangerous because the wheel Is
difficult to control.
Don't ride on the wrong side
of the road. Keep to the right
and stav close to the curb.
Don't dart into a traffic lane
from between parked tars. Al
ways look in both directions.
Don't court disaster by zip
ping along, "no-hands." It is too
easv to lose vour balance. Al
ways grip the handlebars with
both hands.
Rules Supported
Actually these rules come
from the District of Columbia
Motor club, but Lt. Palmer backs
them ud with all his weight.
He goes a little farther in his
campaign. He tests the kids, one
bv one. They are given a certain
distance to pump it up as fast as
they can. Then they are com
manded to stop within a given
area.
They are scolded if they can't
make it. And told to get their
brakes tightened something
most kid can do for themselves
if they know how to use a small
wrench and their hands.

Soviets Expected To Be
First with Hydrogen Bomb
New York. June 7 (U.R) A
leading nuclear scientist said to
day it was probable that Soviet
scientists will develop the hy
drogen bomb first, and that Rus
sia may be able to amass an
atomic bomb stockpile by the
summer of 1951.
Harrison Brown, now a pro
fessor at the University of Chi
cago's Institute for Nuclear stud
ies and former assistant director
of chemistry at Oak Ridge, said
that "One cannot keep a secret
of nature from a man who
knows the proper questions to
ask and how to answer them."
Aid Discounted
Writing in the quarterly, The
American Scholar, Brown dis
counted the aid given to Soviet
atomic bomb development by
the turncoat British scientist Dr.
Klaus Fuchs.
"It is probable that the Rus
sians, solely by asking the prop
er questions of nature, would
have developed the bomb any
way. "And we can expect that the
Soviet production of bombs is
being pushed forward today
with all possible rapidity,"
Brown said. "Indeed, it is quite
possible that by the summer of
1951 Russia may have developed
a sufficient number of bombs of
the present type to enable her
to destroy completely the major
cities of western Europe should
she feel compelled to do so."

Build New Church
The Rev. J. S. Manchester,
pastor of the Medford Assembly
ot God church, announced today
that the church has purchased
four lots at West Main and
Quince streets will will be the
site of a new church to replace
the one now in use at 11 New
town street.
Together with property al
ready owned at the West Main
location the new acquisition
gives the church title to more
than one acre of land to be used
for the new structure. Construc
tion is due to start within the
near future, the Rev. Mr. Man
chester said.
He said the building would be
built partly by donated labor,
and when completed would be
one of the most modern in de
sien on the west coast. He ex
pects there will be space for the
addition of a Bible college
eventually. Final estimates of
the cost of the project have not
been made.
The Dresent Assembly of God
church building will be offered
for sale.
