It isn't com mon that one of us little guys gets in to see the presi dent, .but Don and his lovely lady did. That was the other day when Don, a legless vet- eran, came t o the capital as the honored guest at a reunion of survivors of the aircraft carrier Hornet. An affable guy with a ready Erin. In those days he was avia- Barman Nichols Supreme Court Upholds Negroes in Segregation Cases Washington, June 6 (U.R) The simreme court ruled in favor of Negroes yesterday in three separate cases involving segre eation. The tribunal: 1. Ruled, 8 to 0 that Negroes must be served the same as white persons on railroad dining cars. 2. Ruled. 9 to 0. that the Uni-ver.-itv of Texas law school must admit a Negro student because the st.'ite does not now give Negro law students educational opportunities equal to those en joyed by white students. Discrimination Ruled 3. Ruled. 9 to 0, that Okla homa discriminates against Negro students at its state uni versity graduate school by seg gregating them in classrooms and elsewhere. The court did not go into the constitutionality of the issues In volved. In the Texas case, it said it saw no reason to re-examine the 54-year-old doctrine of "srnarale but equal" treatment of Negroes. Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson said in the opinion on the Texas case that a comparison of tiie University of Texas law school and the separate law school for Negroes shows no "substantial equality in the education op- Sortunities offered white and egro law students by the state." Warfare on Job Accidents Asked Washington, June 6 (U.R) President Truman called today for an all-out fight against job accidents which, he said, weaken the nation in perilous times In the opening address to his Conference on Industrial Safety, Mr. Truman pointed out that industrial accidents took 13.000 lives and permanently disabled 79.000 workers last year. The number of accidents actually was down seven per cent the previous year, but Mr. Truman said "we can do better than that." "In these times," he said, "we cannot afford to be wasteful of our national strength." Mr Truman said the nation's voice in world affairs can "never be stronger than our national economy." The strength of the economy in turn, depends upon our productive capacity. "That is why it is more im portant than ever for us to pre vent the losses that result from industrial accidents," the presi dent said. Although he hasn't enough stubs left to wear artificial limbs he doesn't consider it any handi cap at all. "Nobody is going to have to carry me along," he said. "I ll get by." He lives a near-normal life out in Billings. The Clarks have two pretty daughters, both born after he got out of service. There is Jackie Lee, aged 4, and Donna Lynn, who is just two months old. Don owns his own home. It's a five-room log-house, the only one of its kind in Billings. The former sailor didn't build it; he bought it after the war. Clark is steadily employed Having no legs, he naturally works with his hands. He is busy nine hours a day re-winding electrical motors for the car buretor and electric company in his home town. "That sounds like long hours," he said. "Maybe it is, but it keeps me busy. It gives me something to think about all day long the prospect of getting home to that fine family of mine. Don is 50 doggone independent that he doesn't even want any body to drive him to work. He drives himself in one of those cars which amputees can handle by hand. VACATION HEAVE!
