ford school board.
Monday, June 19. is the date
of the annual election and one
director will be named for five
years. The term of John P.
Moffat expires. Moffat has not
informed the city school office
of his plans concerning reelec
tion. H Three Children
Carpenter, born in Medford
in 1915. has resided here con
tinuously since 1946. He has
three children. A' Harvard uni
versity graduate in 1937, Car
penter was a pilot instructor
for the army and later flew for
the navy during the war.
Eighty-five persons signed
Carpenter's petitions.
Nominating petitions for
school board candidates must
be filed at least seven days be
fore, the election. Because of
the intervening week-end, peti
tions here must be filed by Sat
urday noon, June 10. A candi
date must file acceptance of
nomination at least five days
before the election. Tuesday,
June 13 will be the last day
for acceptance.

Ashland Woman
Ashland, June 3 A branch of
the Jackson County Health as
sociation was organized at the
home of Mrs. John Cotton here
Wednesday. Purpose of the new
unit will be to assist with the an
nual tuberculosis x-ray prografn
and sale of Christmas seals in the
Ashland area.
Mrs. Cotton was elected presi
dent of the branch and will serve
for the coming year. She is secre
tary of the countv chapter and
a member of the executive com
mittee. For the past throe years
she has been in charge of the
Ashland x-ray program.

ald McDougail secretary - treas
urer. She will also serve on the
executive board.
Members Cooperate
Although there has not been
an active branch in Ashland for
some time, a number of local
residents have cooperated with
the county organizations which
meets regularly at Mediord. Mrs.
Erne! Stearns has been in charge
of compiling the Ashland Christ
mas seal mailing list and Mrs.
Robert Stough has served as secretary-treasurer.
Both have as
sistted with the monthly baby
clinics here.
At the meeting, Miss Frances
Clink, Jackson county nurse, de
scribed her work and its rela
tion to the Jackson County
Health association. Hope was ex
pressed that mnnv Ashland peo
ple will Join the new unit and
Mrs. H. S. Ingle was appointed

gram. Rogue River Budget
Election Due June 5
Rogue River, June 3 An elec
tion to be held at the Grange
hall June 5. to ratifv the city
budget for the coming year. The
budget is SI 300 less than last
year. A complete list of the mon
ey spent in the past year and a
half for city Improvements has
been posted beside the election

He buzzed In last Thursday
from San Francisco and has
been busy all of the days and
part of the nights with William
"Bill" Clegg, manager of Camp

Sandy makes his home with
wife Sandra in San Francisco.
Sam Bowe, who spoke at the
Theodore "Daddy" Penland cere
monies last Sunday was born at
Astoria, Ore. As a matter of fact
he was the first baby ushered
into the world in a brand new
maternity ward that St. Mary's
hospital completed just prior to
the moment Sam yowled his way

can Legion, delivered a masterly
oration, in honor of Penland,
last national commander of the
Grand Army of the Republic.
It will be long remembered by
those who heard it.
Sam's dad was stationed at
Fort Stevens at the time and he
declares himself a real product
of Clatsop county.

Coaching claimed him for a
while. With Uncle Sam he went
from buck private to a captain
in chemical warfare. Was In
Africa. Italv, Sicily and Europe.
He's now in the administrative
end of the school system and
when we chatted a while It la
easy to see why Medford people
like him. And we Greybeards
are proud of him, too.
The old brindle corriders
throughout this station are get
ting a going over. A crew of
painters from Over Town have
a contract to make 'em white
a great change for the better.
A paragraph or two about
Charles Q. Goold, Camp White
chauffeur. He has been making
his home in Medford since 1906
and was on the Mexican border
with the local Oregon national
guard company. When things
kicked up in 1917 young Goold,
getting the consent of his par
ents because he was too young,
transferred from the army and
got into the United States navy
medical corps.

This was a never-to-be-forgotten
experience but space will
not permit printing details, But

indescribable.
For week or more we tried
to remember where he had seen
