Anybody who can master the art of making a doll behave on the other end of a string can make a fancy living. I talked to the research people at the National Geographic so ciety and found that the use of puppets is so ancient that the origin has been lost In the shuffle. Early Hindus, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used hand made dolls that moved and acted like people. The legend in China is that a puppet presentation for the em peror was made a thousand years or so before the birth of Christ. That performance must have Forester Urges Fire Preparation By Local Loggers A move to mobilize the log ging industry in the vicinity of Metiford into a quick-striking and effective fire-fighting force to combat fires this summer was urged this week by W. D. Hagen stein, chief forester for the forest conservation committee of the Pacific Northwest Forest Indus tries. Every local logging operator is urged by the forest leader to prepare his operation for any emergency in case of fire. Hagenstein outlined a four point action program for each logging unit: (1) Prepare a fire fighting plan for each camp; (2) assign each logger to a specific job to be ready when a fire starts; (3) see that there are plen ty of tools for every logger (axes, shovels, power saws) and that they are kept handy and in good shape where every man knows their location, and (4) have fire drills at regular In tervals to accustom men to speed. Should Post .Warnings . "Every operator or logging boss," Hagenstein urged, "should post his camp with fire warning signs. He should work with his crews to get their full coopera tion. He should insist on every man In camp being careful with fire." The logging industry of west ern Washington and Oregon must take the lead, the forester warned, in tnis fire prevention program if we are to get the fullest support from the general public for Keep Oregon and Washington Green. "Loggers got a lot of slash burned last fall," Hagenstein stated. "There Is every indica tion we will have a good seed year. Any unnecessary forest fires could ,destroy our chances for natural reseeding of tens of thousands of acres of stump stubble. The- Industry and the public have too big a stake in reforestation to permit upsetting this program with useless man caused forest fires."
