Headache Census Aimed at Fewer Cranium Pains New Orleans (UP The Lou isiana State medical school is trying to tarn headaches with pencil and paper and a mechan ical calculator. The L.S.U. allergy clinic is taking a headache census, on forms than can be fed into a calculator, among employees of New Orleans business houses and industries. Dr. Henry Ognen, who is making the census, said he hopes to got enough informa tion to correlate tha I actors com mon to headache sufferers. Tha survey form asks some 200 questions. 100 ol tnem re lated to headaches alone, an the others to vital statistics, oc cupation, marital status, medical history, physical condition, al lergies, education and other per sonal information. Dr, Ogden said a lot of man hours are lost in industry and busines because of heartaches, and that if he gets enough data it "may be of tremendous value in the management of head aches." Two Typtt Liilad He wants to find out what causes headaches, who is most likely to have them, and how frequently headaches plague people In various occupations. Headaches generally are In one of two classifications, ha said, vascular and non-vascular. Vascular headaches are caused by swelling arteries In the cranium, which causes painful pressure on the brain. Non-vascular headaches can be caused by such things as eye strain, and apparently are not so much of a problem as the vascular type. The vascular group includes migraine headaches and Iho.e caused bv allergies, infections and tension. Dr. Ogden said they are best treated bv special drugs, prescribed by a physician, which reduce the arterial swell ing. Ordinary pain-killing drugs have little or no etteel on tnem, he said. Causes Varied Dr. Oeden said preliminary information strongly indicates that migraine heartaches are started by psychogenic "trig cers" such as anger, anxiety, de pression and lack of sleep. But weather changes, food and In halant allergies and hormone or endocrine disturbances also may cause them. The L.S.U. allergy specialist said that to make his survey scientifically valid, he needs 100 per cent co-operation irom indi vidual business and industry groups polled and must have re ports from people who never have headaches, at well as from sufferers. The survey forms, when fill ed out by Individuals, are fed Into an IBM calculator. The ma chine will add up and then break down the various responses, to give Dr. Ogden a comprehensive picture of headachei among the groups tested, Saginaw, Mich (U.R) A bald headed man bought several raf fle tickets and won a free perma nent wave.
